Distinct modes of migration position oligodendrocyte precursors for localized cell division in the developing spinal cord.

Establishment of the cytoarchitecture of the central nervous system reflects the stereotyped cell migration and proliferation of precursor c … d. In contrast to DNA replication that occurs at the ventricular zone or throughout the spinal cord neuropil, cell division or cytokinesis of OPCs occurs predominantly at the interface between gray and white matters, with the majority of cleavage planes parallel to the pial surface. These studies suggest that positional cues are critical for regulating OPC …

Intrinsic neurons of Drosophila mushroom bodies express short neuropeptide F: relations to extrinsic neurons expressing different neurotransmitters.

Mushroom bodies constitute prominent paired neuropils in the brain of insects, known to be involved in higher olfactory processing and learning and memory. In Drosophila there are about 2,500 intrinsic mushroom body neurons, Kenyon cells, and a large number of different extrinsic neurons connecting the calyx, peduncle, and lobes to other portions of the brain. The neurotransmitter of the Kenyon cells has not been identified in any insect. Here we show expression of the gene snpf and its neuropeptide products (short neuropeptide F; sNPFs) in larval and adult Drosophila Kenyon cells by means of …

Accumulation of N-terminal mutant huntingtin in mouse and monkey models implicated as a pathogenic mechanism in Huntington's disease.

A number of mouse models expressing mutant huntingtin (htt) with an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) domain are useful for studying the pathog … nic monkeys expressing exon-1 htt with a 147-glutamine repeat (147Q) died early and showed abundant neuropil aggregates in swelling neuronal processes. Fractionation of HD150Q knock-in mice brains revealed an age-dependent accumulation of N-terminal mutant htt fragments in the nucleus and synaptosomes, and this accumulation was most pronounced in the stria …

Cortical neuronal densities and lamination in focal cortical dysplasia.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is considered to represent a malformation due to abnormal cortical development (MCD) and is an important caus … n-epilepsy surgical control group. The lower overall neuronal densities observed in FCD may reflect neuropil expansion, a local failure of neuronal migration, proliferation or secondary neuronal loss. The preservation of relative differences in neuronal densities between cortical layers and laminar patterns of neurofilament staining in FCD would support th …

Characterization of somatostatin- and cholecystokinin-immunoreactive periglomerular cells in the rat olfactory bulb.

Periglomerular cells (PG) are interneurons of the olfactory bulb (OB) that modulate the first synaptic relay of the olfactory information fr … and CCK-containing PG are distributed in the synaptic and sensory subcompartments of the glomerular neuropil and receive synaptic contacts from the olfactory axons. Therefore, they should be included in the type 1 group rather than in the type 2. Altogether, these data indicate that the SOM- and the CCK-containing PG may constitute a group of GABA-immunone …

The use of mood stabilizers as plasticity enhancers in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Mood disorders have traditionally been conceptualized as neurochemical disorders, but there is now evidence from a variety of sources demons … ctive manner, suggesting a reversal of illness-related atrophy and an increase in the volume of the neuropil. These unique and unexpected properties of lithium and valproate suggest that they may have broader utility as adjunctive agents in the treatment of a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders associated with cell atrophy or loss. The adjunctive use of …

Developmentally regulated expression of brain-specific chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, neurocan and phosphacan, in the postnatal rat hippocampus.

Neuronal fractalkine expression in HIV-1 encephalitis: roles for macrophage recruitment and neuroprotection in the central nervous system.

HIV-1 infection of the brain results in chronic inflammation, contributing to the neuropathogenesis of HIV-1 associated neurologic disease. HIV-1-infected mononuclear phagocytes (MP) present in inflammatory infiltrates produce neurotoxins that mediate inflammation, dysfunction, and neuronal apoptosis. Neurologic disease is correlated with the relative number of MP in and around inflammatory infiltrates and not viral burden. It is unclear whether these cells also play a neuroprotective role. We show that the chemokine, fractalkine (FKN), is markedly up-regulated in neurons and neuropil in brain…

Neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease: what is new since A. Alzheimer?

Alzheimer's disease results from severe cytoskeletal alterations in only a few neuronal types within the human central nervous system. These intraneuronal changes take the form of neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads. Beginning in predisposed induction sites in the allocortex, the lesions follow a predictable sequence as they engulf other territories of the cerebral cortex and a specific set of subcortical nuclei. Some components of the brain are devastated, while others remain intact until the end phase of the disease. Assessment of the location of the afflicted neurons and the severi…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Osmotic disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) provides a method for transvascular delivery of therapeutic agen … emisphere, and the electron-dense MION core was detected intracellularly and extracellularly in the neuropil. CONCLUSION: MR images showing homogeneous delivery to the brain at the macroscopic level did not indicate delivery at the microscopic level. Neuronal and glial somal size in the prefrontal cortex: a postmortem morphometric study of schizophrenia and Huntington disease.

BACKGROUND: The cortex of patients with schizophrenia exhibits a deficit in neuropil, but the nature and extent of cellular abnormalities remain unclear. To gain further insight into this abnormality, neuronal and glial somal size were analyzed in postmortem brains from 9 patients with schizophrenia, 10 normal (control) patients, and 7 patients with Huntington disease, the latter representing a known neurodegenerative disorder. METHODS: A 3-dimensional image analyzer was used to measure the perimeters of 10722 neuronal and 19913 glial profiles in Brodmann areas 9 and 17. Neurons and glia were…

Is esthesioneuroblastoma a peripheral neuroectodermal tumor?

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB; olfactory neuroblastoma) is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm of the sinonasal area and anterior cranial fossa. The histogenesis of the lesion is not clearly delineated, and the broad histological spectrum of ENB has confounded the issue. The location, histological features (neuropil, Homer Wright, and olfactory rosettes), and reported immunocytochemical reactions (neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and chromogranin (CHR) positivity) suggest that ENB may be a neural or neuroendocrine neoplasm derived from the olfactory membrane. Recent demonstration in two of three met…
