Dermoscopy (surface microscopy) is a clinical technique which uses a hand-held magnifying instrument, usually with liquid at the skin-instrument interface, to examine pigmented lesions on the skin surface. A magnification of x 10 is usually used. Dermoscopy assists in deciding if the lesion should be excised or biopsied, requires monitoring or can be safely left in situ. The technique provides a bridge between the naked eye appearance of a lesion and the histopathological examination. Multiple dermoscopic features have been described and many of their histological correlates have been determin

BACKGROUND: Many different tumors have been reported to occur simultaneously as collision lesions. To date, no such events have been reported between mycosis fungoides (MFs) and melanocytic neoplasms.
METHODS: Two cases are presented in which patches of MF were superimposed on melanocytic nevi. In addition, 967 biopsies of MF from 411 patients were identified in an 8-year retrospective database search. Patient pathology history summaries were reviewed to identify inflamed nevi, atypical nevi, and melanoma submitted for histologic evaluation from this population.
RESULTS: The occurrence of MF

A 15-year-old boy had an unusual combination of giant congenital melanocytic nevus on his back and a large speckled lentiginous nevus arranged in a checkerboard pattern on the dorsal and lateral aspects of his trunk. The two pigmentary nevi showed distinguishing features both clinically and histopathologically. The speckled lentiginous nevus was not noted at birth but became visible during childhood. We hypothesize that this uncommon co-occurrence may represent a further example of twin spotting and may be categorized as a new, distinct type of phacomatosis.

We report a case of a 13 year old boy with non-familial, multiple blue rubber bleb nevi (BRBN). He also had additional dysmorphic anomalies including a low hairline, low set ears, narrow nares, ptosis, hypotelorism, a high arched palate and downward slanting of the outer canthi. Skeletal deformities included a short, slightly webbed neck, kyphosis, cubitus valgus, non-traumatic luxation of the head of the right radius and a short left little and index fingers. He had no evidence of gastrointestinal lesions or bleeding, congenital heart or renal disease or enchondromata. The boy was mentally sl

Presence of large numbers of acquired melanocytic nevi is a strong risk factor for malignant melanoma in adults. A series of studies conducted over the past 10 to 15 years have shown that the lighter skin color, propensity to burn rather than to tan in the sun, and frequent episodes of childhood sunburn increase nevus prevalence in childhood and adolescence. Solar ultraviolet radiation exposure itself has been implicated in both the genesis of new nevi in children and the disappearance of nevi in older adult life.

We described the simultaneous occurrence of perinaevic eczema (Meyerson's naevi) and Sutton's halo naevus in one patient. Characteristic clinical and histological features of perinaevic eczema were found around four benign melanocytic naevi on the limbs. In addition, the patient had a typical Sutton's naevus on the back. The association of Meyerson's naevi and Sutton's naevus has been reported only once in the past literature. Both diseases appeared a few weeks after a severe sunburn. The role of sun exposure in the development of eczematiform and/or vitiligoid reactions around melanocytic nae

We report a 6-year-old female with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) who presented with a very large acquired melanocytic lesion. The lesion demonstrated many features both clinically and histologically that made the distinction from malignant melanoma difficult. The pathogenesis of this lesion and other unusual melanocytic lesions seen in the setting of acute and chronic blistering disorders seems related to repeated episodes of disruption of the dermal-epidermal junction.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma and its precursors were the general subjects of the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference held in January 1992. Particular emphasis was placed on the diagnosis of early melanoma, especially melanoma in situ, and the controversies surrounding dysplastic nevi. Recent studies of unusual nevi often confused with melanoma, eg, deep-penetrating (plexiform) nevus, combined nevus, desmoplastic melanocytic nevus, and Spitz nevus in childhood, provided detailed histologic criteria for their discrimination from melanoma. Rare or unusual forms of melanoma, includi

The clinical features of 100 dysplastic nevi were tabulated. Although certain characteristics were present in most or all of these melanocytic nevi, there was a marked heterogeneity of other clinical features. The preponderant type of large (greater than or equal to 8 mm) melanocytic nevus in patients with classic dysplastic nevi is a papule or plaque with the following characteristics: multicoloration (various shades of tans, browns, reds, or black); slightly raised height for its broad diameter; mamillated surface; and lack of hypertrichosis. An atlas illustrates some of the clinical varieti

In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive, repetitive imaging tool that provides real-time images at nearly cellular histological resolution. Application of this technology to skin imaging during the last decade has been a great advance in dermatology. As melanin is the strongest endogenous contrast in human skin, pigmentary disorders caused by abnormal amounts of melanin in the skin could be the most suitable candidates for RCM examination. This article reviewed the RCM applications in the characterization and management of pigmentary disorders. The application of RCM in
