New betaproteobacterial Rhizobium strains able to efficiently nodulate Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan.

Among the leguminous trees native to Uruguay, Parapiptadenia rigida (Angico), a Mimosoideae legume, is one of the most promising species for agroforestry. Like many other legumes, it is able to establish symbiotic associations with rhizobia and belongs to the group known as nitrogen-fixing trees, which are major components of agroforestry systems. Information about rhizobial symbionts for this genus is scarce, and thus, the aim of this work was to identify and characterize rhizobia associated with P. rigida. A collection of Angico-nodulating isolates was obtained, and 47 isolates were selected

Residential early-life air pollution exposure and oculomotor markers of cognitive workload in children: a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that early brain development is particularly vulnerable to environmental influences, with early-life air pollution exposure linked to attention problems, anxiety, and depression. In this study, we examined associations of early-life air pollution exposure with eye-tracking-derived measures of cognitive workload and emotion-related attentional bias in school-aged children, while also assessing whether recent exposure was associated with these outcomes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted within the ongoing ENVIRONAGE birth cohort, which h

Genomics and metabolomics assisted functional characterization of Bacillus velezensis D83 as a biocontrol and plant growth-promoting bacterium.

Diseases triggered by phytopathogenic bacteria lead to substantial economic losses within the realm of agricultural production. Bacillus vel … omoting ability is related to its growth-promoting properties such as indoleacetic acid production, nitrogen fixation, and phosphate solubilization. This effect of promoting plant growth is more effective than the microbial preparations on the market. A complete genome sequencing of D83 yielded a genome size of 3,929,757 bp and a GC content of 46.5%. The genome ana …

Proteome Response of a Metabolically Flexible Anoxygenic Phototroph to Fe(II) Oxidation.

The oxidation of Fe(II) by anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria was likely a key contributor to Earth's biosphere prior to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis and is still found in a diverse range of modern environments. All known phototrophic Fe(II) oxidizers can utilize a wide range of substrates, thus making them very metabolically flexible. However, the underlying adaptations required to oxidize Fe(II), a potential stressor, are not completely understood. We used a combination of quantitative proteomics and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) to compare cells of Rhodop

Liver stem cells: implications for hepatocarcinogenesis.

Numerous studies point to the fact that liver tumors are derived from single cells (monoclonal), but the important question is, which cell? Stem cell biology and cancer are inextricably linked. In continually renewing tissues such as the intestinal mucosa and epidermis, in which a steady flux of cells occurs from the stem cell zone to the terminally differentiated cells that are imminently to be lost, it is widely accepted that cancer is a disease of stem cells, as these are the only cells that persist in the tissue for a sufficient length of time to acquire the requisite number of genetic cha

Integrated application of meat waste-derived organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer in sugarcane cultivation.

Slaughterhouse waste is a major source of environmental pollution. However, its rich organic content holds considerable potential for enhancing soil fertility. Herein, slaughterhouses meat waste was used to produce organic fertilizer (OF), and its effect on sugarcane growth, productivity and soil fertility were evaluated. The decomposition of the collected meat waste was carried out in a controlled fermentation pit. Initially, the sample was treated by sulfuric acid (H2SO4), followed by the addition of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and dipotassium phosphate (K2HPO4). The pH of the medium was then

Genetic and phenotypic diversity of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria isolated from sugarcane plants growing in pakistan.

Bacteria were isolated from roots of sugarcane varieties grown in the fields of Punjab. They were identified by using API20E/NE bacterial identification kits and from sequences of 16S rRNA and amplicons of the cpn60 gene. The majority of bacteria were found to belong to the genera of Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and Klebsiella, but members of genera Azospirillum, Rhizobium, Rahnella, Delftia, Caulobacter, Pannonibacter, Xanthomonas, and Stenotrophomonas were also found. The community, however, was dominated by members of the Pseudomonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae, as representatives of these ge

Molecular cloning and complementation analysis of nifV gene from Frankia EuIK1 strain.

The nifV gene from the Frankia EuIK1 strain, a symbiont of Elaeagnus umbellata, was cloned and a complementation test using the Klebsiella pneumoniae nifV mutant was performed to verify its function. The nifV ORF consists of 1245 bp, which encodes 414 amino acids. However, the putative promoter and Shine-Dalgarno sequences were not found in the 5' region of the ORF. The Frankia EuIK1 nifV ORF showed about a 70% nucleotide identity and 80% amino acid similarity with that of Frankia sp. FaC1. In the upstream region of the nifV, a putative ORF that showed a 51% nucleotide identity with the afcD g

Productivity of pasture-based systems with lower chemical and feed n inputs on a wet mineral soil.

To meet national and European Union (EU) climate targets will require pasture-based dairy systems to reduce reliance on purchased inputs while sustaining output. Evidence to guide such reductions on wet mineral soils remains underexplored, as the majority of Irish research has been undertaken on freely draining soils in southern location. This study quantifies system performance under reduced chemical and concentrate feed nitrogen (N) on such soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of lowering farm-gate N inputs (i.e., N imported through the farm gate) through reductions

Understanding Charge Transport in Carbon Nitride for Enhanced Photocatalytic Solar Fuel Production.

Photocatalytic solar fuel production, for example, production of hydrogen via water-splitting, is an effective means of chemical storage of solar energy and provides a potential option for achieving a zero-emissions energy system. Conveniently, hydrogen can be converted back to electricity either via fuel cells or through combustion in gas turbines, or it can be mixed in low concentrations with natural gas or biogas for combustion in existing power plants. The cornerstone of a practical solar fuel production process is a stable, efficient, and scalable photocatalyst (a semiconductor material t

Pantoea agglomerans: a mysterious bacterium of evil and good. Part IV. Beneficial effects.

Pantoea agglomerans, a gammaproteobacterium of plant origin, possesses many beneficial traits that could be used for the prevention and/or treatment of human and animal diseases, combating plant pathogens, promotion of plant growth and bioremediation of the environment. It produces a number of antibiotics (herbicolin, pantocins, microcin, agglomerins, andrimid, phenazine, among others) which could be used for combating plant, animal and human pathogens or for food preservation. Japanese researchers have demonstrated that the low-molecular-mass lipopolysaccharide of P. agglomerans isolated by t

Biotechnological potential of plant growth-promoting bacteria from the roots and rhizospheres of endemic plants in ironstone vegetation in southeastern Brazil.

Microorganisms associated with plants have a great biotechnological potential, but investigations of these microorganisms associated with native plants in peculiar environments has been incipient. The objective of this study was to analyze the plant growth-promoting bacteria potential of cultivable bacteria associated with rare plants from the ferruginous rocky fields of the Brazilian Iron Quadrangle. The roots and rhizospheres of nine endemic plants species and samples of a root found in a lateritiric duricrust (canga) cave were collected, the culturable bacteria isolated and prospected for d

Protective effect of the Nramp1 BB genotype against Brucella abortus in the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

We tested 413 water buffalo cows (142 cases and 271 controls) for the presence of anti-Brucella abortus antibodies (by the skin test, the agglutination test, and the complement fixation test) and the Nramp1 genotype (by capillary electrophoresis). Four alleles (Nramp1A, -B, -C, and -D) were detected in the 3' untranslated region of the Nramp1 gene. The BB genotype was represented among only controls, providing evidence that this genotype confers resistance to Brucella abortus. The monocytes from the BB (resistant) subjects displayed a higher basal level of Nramp1 mRNA and a lower number of via

[RECONSTRUCTING THE LIFE OF AN UNKNOWN MAN--INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH].

The remains of a tomb were discovered below the foundations of the Roman church of “Majka Bozja Gorska” in Lobor in 2002. It was a vaulted tomb carved from a single stone. The narthex of ancient Christian and pre-roman churches often served as the resting place of religious, secular and noble dignitaries, who were credited for founding the church at the time. By anthropological methods, the age, gender, height, pathological changes, tendon and ligament hinges and degree of development were able to be analysed. The stable isotopes of Carbon-13, Nitrogen-15 and Oxygen-18 were analysed and expres

AN EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF BACTERIAL ALLERGY.

Our experiments have confirmed the fact that the so called bacterial allergies are dependent upon a mechanism which differs materially from that determining true protein anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis to protein substances of the bacteria probably occurs but plays a relatively unimportant rôle in the phenomena of infection. The bacterial allergies, however, are of great importance since they develop rapidly and render the infected animal highly vulnerable to products of the bacterial growth which are relatively innocuous for the normal animal. Neither the type-specific carbohydrate "residue antigens

Non-union after bisphosphonate-associated atypical femoral fractures: a review of the current literature.

BACKGROUND: This article explores the mechanism of action of atypical femoral fractures (AFF), specifically focussing on osteoporosis, management challenges, and the implications for clinical practice. Non-union of AFF can result in severe pain, deformity and restricted mobility-all of which will have a detrimental impact on the patients' quality of life. PURPOSE: This review consolidates the current literature regarding non-union after bisphosphonate-associated atypical femoral fractures, providing a revision tool for higher examinations. METHOD/FINDINGS: An extensive search strategy was co

Vision of Life's Code: Molecular Probe Nanoarchitectonics for Deep RNA/DNA Illumination.

Visualization of RNA and DNA provides a window of opportunity for the early detection of multiple diseases and approaches to manipulate them before any pathological processes occur. However, current imaging systems often fail to meet these demands due to the need for multiple RNA and DNA chemical probes, which increases experimental complexity, reduces awareness of false positives, and limits imaging accuracy in complex biosystems. In this work, we identify the key challenges associated with using multiple probes for RNA and DNA imaging and analyze the mechanisms and performance of existing im
