Congenital syphilis: old disease, new resurgence.

The resurgence of syphilis has a detrimental effect on the health of communities and populations. As this epidemic continues, pediatric nurse practitioners may care for children with congenital syphilis. Children with congenital syphilis are at increased risk for physical abnormalities and developmental delays. Frequent physical and developmental assessments with goal-oriented plans will assist the child and family to achieve their maximum potential. Pediatric nurse practitioners who are knowledgeable about congenital syphilis, its manifestations, and associated nursing care needs will serve a

An Interprofessional Approach to Family-Centered Child Protective Services Referral: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Members of the trauma team often find themselves in a uniquely challenging position wherein their role on the care team may necessitate developing a working relationship with alleged or confirmed perpetrators of abuse. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-week-old admitted to the hospital with hyponatremia and evaluation for suspected child physical abuse. Specific details of the case were a barrier to communication and interactions between the patient's mother and the trauma nurse. This report will provide a discussion of takeaway lessons to support communication with this patient population.

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A NURSE-LED SELF-DIRECTED PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION MODEL: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL PRACTICES.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric rehabilitation has become a global health priority due to increasing survival among children with neurodevelopmental disorders and medical complexity. Although nurse-led rehabilitation models are increasingly recognized as effective approaches for improving continuity of care and rehabilitation outcomes, considerable international variation persists in nursing roles, organizational structures, and integration of digital health strategies, particularly in transitional health systems. AIM: To systematically map and compare international nurse-led pediatric rehabilitation m

Living arrangements, health outcomes, and the buffering role of social capital among older adults in China.

BACKGROUND: Currently, about 40 million older people in China live alone or in nursing homes, and this number is expected to continue increasing. It is important to examine the effects of living arrangements on older people's health status and determine whether different types of social capital help buffer the health effects of living alone or in nursing homes. METHOD: We used data from the CLHLS survey (2017-2018), which included 9,669 older adults. Among them, 1,542 lived alone, 312 lived in nursing homes, and 7,815 lived with their family. We used linear regression to examine the relations

Parent-to-Parent Coaching for Parents of Children Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation with Incomplete Home Health Nursing Teams: A Pilot Support and Empowerment Model.

Parents of children requiring invasive home mechanical ventilation (IMV) rely on, and are expected to manage, complex home health nursing care teams. However, ubiquitous shortages in the pediatric home healthcare workforce leave most families with incomplete nursing support, with negative impacts on child and family well-being. Parents report feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and unsupported by community healthcare services. Parent-to-parent support programs in other populations of children with disabilities have been shown to embolden parents with practical solutions, emotional support, and soci

Nurses' perspectives on the care provided to cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Optimal care for patients with cancer involves the provision of effective physical and psychological care. Nurses are key providers of this care; however, the effectiveness of care is dependent on the nurses' training, skills, attitudes, and beliefs. OBJECTIVE: The study reported in this article explored cancer nurses' perceptions of their ability to provide psychosocial care to adults with cancer and their subsequent evaluation of the effectiveness of the care provided. This study was the first part of a larger project that evaluated the effectiveness of Proctor's model of clinic

Workplace violence, intimate partner violence, and depression in nurses: the mediating role of impostor syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global mental health concern and demonstrates high prevalence among nurses, significantly impairing their quality of life. Previous studies have identified impostor syndrome (IS), workplace violence (WPV), and intimate partner violence (IPV) as risk factors for depression. It has been hypothesised that WPV and IPV may promote the development of IS, which in turn could lead to depression; however, these relationships have not been empirically confirmed. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of IS in the relationships between WPV, IPV, and depression a

Tensions in the therapeutic relationship: emotional labour in the response to child abuse and neglect in primary healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and neglect (child abuse) is a prevalent public health issue linked to survivors experiencing a higher risk of health issues such as obesity, heart disease and major depression. Given the significant impact of child abuse on health, general practitioners (GPs) and primary care nurses (nurses) are well-placed to respond to child abuse. However, research shows that responding to child abuse is difficult for health practitioners, especially the act of reporting child abuse. The present study aimed to understand how GPs and nurses experience the response to child abuse in p

An Efficient Nurse Practitioner-Led Community-Based Service Model for Delivering Coordinated Care to Persons With Serious Mental Illness at Risk for Homelessness [Formula: see text].

BACKGROUND: Access to mental health care is a struggle for those with serious mental illness (SMI). About 25% of homeless suffer from SMI, compared with 4.2% of the general population. OBJECTIVE: From 2003 to 2012, St. Paul's Center (SPC) operated a unique model to provide quality care to the homeless and those at risk for homelessness, incarceration, and unnecessary hospitalization because of SMI. Data were available for analysis for the years 2008 to 2010. DESIGN: The SPC was developed, managed, and staffed by board-certified psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners, offering comprehe

A Qualitative Inquiry into Nurse-Family Partnership Black Client Perspectives.

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a home visiting program designed to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development, and life course outcomes for families facing socioeconomic inequalities through support and education provided by nurses to first-time mothers during pregnancy and up to 2 years postpartum. Studies show that home visiting programs like NFP have positive outcomes, but attrition remains a concern which may impact the desired health equity goals. Black mothers are more likely to withdraw from the NFP program, and research is lacking regarding their experiences in home vi

Contextual Factors Impacting a Pain Management Intervention.

PURPOSE: To determine if findings from our preliminary study related to patient and nursing satisfaction with a pain management intervention could be replicated in a changed environment, and if contextual factors could impact the effectiveness of a pain management intervention on patient satisfaction with nursing staff's management of pain. METHODS: A prospective, experimental design was used with six monthly assessments before, during, and after the intervention. Data were collected from 540 patients admitted to eight medical surgical and progressive care units and nurses that worked in thes

Nurses eating nurses: the caring profession which fails to nurture its own!

For many years student nurses were trained in a more disciplined approach with considerable time allocated to working in the hospital environment and specified times allowed for gaining theoretical knowledge throughout their formal training. Nurses therefore gained a tremendous amount of experience and competency in their practical skills. With the introduction of more specialized equipment and technology it was now desirable to improve the professional status of nurses and nursing education. The introduction of university trained nurses has been met with much criticism. Student nurses are now

Introducing the British Lymphology Society position paper on ankle brachial pressure index.

Prompt application of appropriate compression therapy is essential for effective treatment of lymphoedema. However, it is accepted that prior to the application of compression to the lower limbs, either with bandaging or compression garments, patients should demonstrate a satisfactory vascular status, as assessed via axillary brachial pressure index (ABPI). Unfortunately, the presence of peripheral oedema may render a reading impossible or grossly inaccurate. Relying solely on ABPI assessment is potentially harmful to patients, who may be denied appropriate treatment or experience complication

The COPe concept for the training of communication in highly emotional situations.

Members of transplant teams are oft confronted with highly emotional situations. Inability to handle these situations leads to burn-out and impairs the performance of the team. We introduce and discuss first experiences with a training program--COPe--specifically concentrating on establishing and maintaining communication in such situations.
