Problems and needs for improving primary care of osteoarthritis patients: the views of patients, general practitioners and practice nurses.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is highly prevalent and has substantial impact on quality of life as well as on healthcare costs. The general practitioner (GP) often is the first care provider for patients with this chronic disease. The aim of this study was to identify health care needs of patients with OA and to reveal possible obstacles for improvements in primary care management of OA patients. METHODS: We performed semi-structured interviews with a stratified sample of 20 patients, 20 GPs and 20 practice nurses. RESULTS: Diagnosing OA posed no major problem, but during the course of OA,

The management of urinary catheters: compliance of practice in Danish hospitals, nursing homes and home care to national guidelines.

The compliance of practice to national guidelines on urethral catheter care has been examined. Questionnaires on the practices used with patients under their care were sent to 1350 nursing staff. Replies were received from 1153 individuals, 692 from hospitals, 345 from nursing homes and 116 from home care. While national guidelines stress the importance of maintaining a closed urine drainage system, the results revealed that 25.4% of respondents opened the drainage system to collect samples of urine for analysis, 57.9% to perform bladder washouts and 76% to change urine bags. 26% of respondent

New graduate nurse competencies-Part II: Thematic analysis of the perceptions of academic faculty and acute care hospital practice leaders at the time of new graduate nurse hire and upon completing a 12-month nurse residency program.

BACKGROUND: The various educational pathways to obtain an entry-level nursing degree facilitate a diverse workforce. However, they also create confusion among practice leaders about the competency-level expectations of newly graduated nurses (NGNs). Establishing a clear understanding of the essential core competencies hospital practice leaders can expect of all NGNs, regardless of the type of nursing prelicensure degree program, upon starting their professional practice, and at the end of a 12-month nurse residency program (NRP) will contribute to their ongoing growth and development. This is

Nursing practice in cancer treatment decision making among older adults: A scoping review on behalf of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology Nursing, Allied Health, and Scientists Interest Group.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer treatment decision making (CTDM) presents important challenges among older adults due to variation in health and functional status, presence of comorbidities, differing goals/values, quality and quantity of life considerations, and limited inclusion in clinical trials. Nursing standards and guidelines call for competence in supporting CTDM and nurses advocate for greater involvement. However, clear understanding of the existing evidence to inform nursing practice is lacking. We aimed to map and synthesize evidence that provides insight into nursing practice in CTDM among o

Visualized Standardized Narrative Communication Training for Empathy and Reflective Practice Among Outpatient Nurses: A Nonrandomized Controlled Study.

Outpatient nurses frequently work under substantial time constraints and high emotional demands, making consistent empathic and reflective communication difficult. This nonrandomized controlled pre-post study evaluated whether a visualized, standardized narrative nursing communication technique (SNNCT) was associated with improvements in empathy, reflective practice, communication performance, and patient communication experience among outpatient nurses. Sixty-eight outpatient nurses at a tertiary hospital in Nanchong, Sichuan, China, were assigned nonrandomly to the intervention group (n = 38

Pressure Injury Risk Assessment in Nursing Practice: A Head-to-Head Comparison of the Braden Scale and Machine Learning Models.

Background: Pressure injury (PI) prevention relies heavily on the application of the Braden Scale, yet its predictive performance is limited mainly due to subjective measurements and fixed cut-off points, yielding potential errors in terms of false-positive alarm rates and workforce misuse. Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a promising approach to improve discrimination, but fair comparisons with traditional tools remain scarce in clinical settings. Methods: Using data from 446 hospitalized patients in a tertiary hospital in Chile, we compared five classic ML models for classification again

Nurses' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and educational needs regarding frailty: a multicenter cross-sectional survey in southwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Population aging has made frailty a major public health concern. Frailty is potentially reversible when identified and managed early, and nurses are well positioned to deliver such care; however, nurses' frailty-related competencies vary considerably, and evidence remains scarce in southwestern China, where the aging burden is disproportionately high. We therefore conducted a multicenter study to assess nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding frailty, explore their associated factors, and clarify their educational needs. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was

When behavior outweighs infrastructure: disinfectant and latex exposure and preventive practice among operating room nurses in China.

BACKGROUND: Operating-room (OR) nurses encounter disinfectants, sterilizing agents, and latex products as embedded job tasks, yet their multi-domain symptom burden, safety awareness, and preventive practices have rarely been examined together, particularly in Chinese tertiary-care settings. METHODS: We undertook a single-center cross-sectional investigation of operating-room nurses at a tertiary hospital in China. A rigorously structured questionnaire captured agent-specific exposure frequency, task-based exposure, occupational symptomatology, safety awareness, and preventive practices. Compo
