Timely nutrition assessment and intervention in organ transplant recipients may improve outcomes surrounding transplantation. A pretransplant nutrition assessment should include a variety of parameters including physical assessment, history, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory tests. Malnutrition compromises posttransplant survival; prolonged waiting times worsen outcomes when patients are already malnourished. Severe obesity may decrease graft function and survival in kidney transplant recipients. In the pretransplant phase, nutritional goals include optimization of nutritional status

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition has adverse impacts on survival of cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition, and the nutrition support status in hospitalized patients with cancer in China.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A multi-center, cross-sectional study was conducted in 29 tertiary public hospital wards in 14 Chinese cities. Malnutrition was defined as weight loss (WL) >5% over the past 6 months or body mass index (BMI) <20 kg/m2 with WL >2%. The nutrition risk index (NRI) and performance status (PS) were evaluated.
RESULTS: 1138

In this retrospective study the management of infants who had undergone resection of more than 50% of the small bowel as newborn infants between 1970 and 1988 was analyzed to define prognostic factors. Small bowel resections were performed for atresia (36 cases), volvulus (22 cases), gastroschisis (10 cases), necrotizing enterocolitis (11 cases), and other disorders (8 cases). Patients were classified into two groups depending on the length of residual small bowel: group 1 (n = 35) had less than 40 cm of small bowel and group 2 (n = 51) had 40 to 80 cm of residual small bowel. Patients in grou

Eating is essential to the survival of any living organism. However, beyond simple nutrition, eating is a source of pleasure that awakens a host of emotions and shapes our first relationships. In eating disorders, this vital process becomes a source of psychological distress, with somatic consequences and an impact on the functioning of the individual and his/her environment. Recently, new diagnostic and etiopathogenic approaches have led to a better understanding of these disorders. The use of innovative techniques, such as neuromodulation, virtual reality, and psychedelics, is paving the way

Behavioral methods are inherent in many evidence-based treatments of eating disorders and have also been used separately. This review demonstrates that behavioral methods are necessary in the effective treatment of eating disorders-in particular, the improvement of nutrition and exposure-based methods. It is also possible that these methods are sufficient to treat anorexia nervosa, although other elements are needed on the treatment of bulimia nervosa. The impacts and mechanisms of behavioral and nutritional change merit serious attention in clinical work and research. Clinicians are often rel

Alcoholism, a worldwide disorder, is the cause of a variety of neurologic disorders. In this article we discuss the cellular pathophysiology of ethanol addition and abuse as well as evidence supporting and refuting the role of inheritance in alcoholism. A genetic marker for alcoholism has not been identified, but neurophysiologic studies may be promising. Some neurologic disorders related to longterm alcoholism are due predominantly to inadequate nutrition (the thiamine deficiency that causes Wernicke's encephalopathy), but others appear to involve the neurotoxicity of ethanol on brain (alcoho

Patients with pancreatic cancer who develop irreversible cancer cachexia have a life expectancy of less than 3 months. Therefore, it is extremely important to evaluate the patient's nutritional status as early as possible and to implement an appropriate nutritional intervention in order to reduce the risk of further weight loss and/or muscle loss, which affect the outcomes of cancer treatment and the correct nutritional treatment in patients with pancreatic cancer. A literature review was performed by using the PubMed and Cochrane quick search methodology. The main purpose of this review was t

Correct nutrition and diet are directly correlated with mental health, functions of the immune system, and gut microbiota composition. Diets with a high content of some nutrients, such as fibers, phytochemicals, and short-chain fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), seem to have an anti-inflammatory and protective action on the nervous system. Among nutraceuticals, supplementation of probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids plays a role in improving symptoms of several mental disorders. In this review, we collect data on the efficacy of nutraceuticals in patients with schizophrenia, autism spectrum diso

INTRODUCTION: The evidence on the efficacy of nutrition therapy to prevent complications of dysphagia is based on observational studies that used different tools for nutritional and dysphagia assessment, and different scales for the definition of diet textures, rendering their results incomparable and the knowledge on dysphagia management inconclusive.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study was performed in 267 older outpatients who were assessed for dysphagia and nutritional status by a multidisciplinary team at the Clinical Nutrition Unit of IRCCS INRCA geriatric research hospital

Celiac disease is the most common chronic intestinal disease. It affects approximately 1 % of the world population, affects all age groups and has symptoms both digestive and extra-digestive. The treatment of celiac disease is based on the strict withdrawal of gluten from the diet. This treatment supposes the improvement of symptoms and histology and the reduction of long-term comorbidities. People with celiac disease often follow diets that are far from the theoretical ideal, so they must be supervised and guided to achieve gluten-free diets that are also varied and balanced. In these patient

OBJECTIVE:: To perform a sistematiy review of the literature about the nutritional impact of inflammatory bowel diseases in children and adolescents.
DATA SOURCES:: A systematic review was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO databases, with inclusion of articles in Portuguese and in English with original data, that analyzed nutritional aspects of inflammatory bowel diseases in children and adolescents. The initial search used the terms "inflammatory bowel diseases" and "children" or "adolescents" and "nutritional evaluation" or "nutrition deficiency". The selection of studies wa

Although the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend breast milk for optimal infant nutrition, many parents still choose formula as an acceptable alternative. The wide variety of available formulas is confusing to parents and physicians, but formulas can be classified according to three basic criteria: caloric density, carbohydrate source, and protein composition. Most infants require a term formula with iron. There is insufficient evidence to recommend supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid or arachidonic acid. Soy formulas are indicated for c

Tuberculosis has a dramatic effect on nutritional state and this has been borne out in all the studies that have investigated body composition in affected patients. I have included some of the key studies in this review; those I have not cited generally reach the same conclusions. Such malnutrition undoubtedly contributes to the morbidity of the disease and may also contribute to mortality, particularly in resource-poor settings where nutritional state, even in the "healthy," may be parlous. The extent to which such malnutrition also contributes to pathology remains unclear. Certainly, in othe

The child with a malignancy frequently will have associated cachexia with significant weight loss and malnutrition. The reasons for this are multifactorial and may be related directly to the tumor, such as increased metabolic rate, circulating peptides leading to anorexia, and decreased intake due to poor appetite or gut involvement. There appears to be other reasons involved, including increased whole body protein breakdown, increased lipolysis, and increased gluconeogenesis. Release of certain cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and others may increase the

Close to three-fourths of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) suffer from weight loss. Identifying a single cause for this is difficult, as several factors-including chronic mouth breathing, dyspnea, aerophagia, certain medications, and depression-often act in concert. Malnutrition can exacerbate symptoms of COPD by decreasing ventilatory muscle strength, exercise tolerance, and immunocompetence, and by increasing the risk of depression and anxiety. Goals of nutrition intervention are to prevent or reverse malnutrition without worsening the disease process and to improve

The life expectancy of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is largely dependent on the severity and progress of the pulmonary involvement associated with the disease. Many data support the view that malnutrition and deterioration of lung function are closely interrelated and interdependent, with each affecting the other, leading to a spiral decline in both. The occurrence of malnutrition appears to be associated with poor lung function and poor survival, and conversely prevention of malnutrition appears to be associated with better lung function and improved survival. Nutritional intervention m

Tube feedings are utilized in elderly patients with acute and chronic problems. Inadequate oral intake with malnutrition, comatose state, neurologic disorders with severe dysphagia, extensive burns, massive gastrointestinal resection, and oropharyngeal and upper gastrointestinal malignancies are the commonly encountered conditions requiring tube alimentation. Dysphagia with frequent aspiration is the most common indication for use of tube feedings in the elderly. Nasogastric tube is preferred for short-term feeding, while gastrostomy or jejunostomy is indicated for long-term or permanent nutri

Parenteral nutrition is a well-established technique for feeding patients with intestinal failure and other conditions which render enteral feeding impossible. Biochemical tests are required in the initial assessment of these patients, for monitoring their response to treatment and for the detection and management of complications. The use of these tests is discussed critically and guidelines are provided for the frequency with which they should be performed. Chemical pathologists and clinical biochemists have an important role in the provision of parenteral nutrition as members of multi-disci
