The Role of Lactoferrin in Combating Candida spp. Infections Through Regulation of Oxidative Stress, Immune Response, and Nutritional Support in Women and Newborns.

Lactoferrin (LF) is a natural glycoprotein with strong antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and nutritional potential and is widely present in milk and mucosal secretions. This paper aims to review the current knowledge on the application of lactoferrin and its bioactive peptides in the context of fungal infections caused by Candida spp., focusing on newborns and pregnant women as high-risk groups. The multifaceted mechanisms of LF action are discussed, including iron chelation, destabilization of fungal cell membranes, and modulation of the immune response. Additionally, data demonstrating the ef

Effects of Nutritional Support Combined with Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Muscle Strength and Thickness: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Healthy Young Adult Males.

In the management of post-injury patients with activity limitations, methods to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and hasten recovery are important. This randomized controlled, single-blinded study was a preliminary investigation of the combined effect of nutritional support with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on muscle strength and thickness. Healthy young adult males (median age, 21 years) were enrolled; each of their hands was randomly assigned to one of the following four groups: Placebo, Nutrition, NMES, and Nutrition + NMES. All participants received whey protein or placebo …

Pilot Study on Malnutrition and DNA Damage in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Gastrointestinal Tumors: Is DNA Damage Reversible by Early Individualized Nutritional Support?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nutritional support (NS) in patients with malignancies and malnutrition improves outcome and treatment tolerance. The underlying mechanisms are not completely understood. We aimed to investigate for the first time the influence of an early individualized NS in newly diagnosed patients with gastrointestinal/hepato-pancreatic malignancies and malnutrition on DNA damage, oxidative stress and subclinical inflammation. METHODS: This prospective case-control study included 43 patients with newly diagnosed malignancies and malnutrition. At baseline (F0), we documented patients' …

Impact of maternal nutritional supplementation in conjunction with a breastfeeding support program on breastfeeding performance, birth, and growth outcomes in a Vietnamese population.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal nutritional supplementation (MNS) in conjunction with a breastfeeding support program on birth outcomes and breastfeeding performance. METHODS: A total of 228 singleton Vietnamese mothers aged 20-35 years at 26-29 weeks of gestation with pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) < 25.0 kg/m2 were randomized to the intervention (n = 114), receiving MNS (252 kcal/day) daily up to 12 weeks postpartum and four breastfeeding education and support sessions or to the control (n = 114), receiving standards of care. RESULTS: The intervention was

A study of oral nutritional support with oxandrolone in malnourished patients with alcoholic hepatitis: results of a Department of Veterans Affairs cooperative study.

A Veterans Affairs cooperative study involving 273 male patients was performed to evaluate efficacy of oxandrolone in combination with an enteral food supplement in severe alcoholic hepatitis. All patients had some degree of protein calorie malnutrition. On an intention-to-treat basis, only minimal changes in mortality were observed. However, in patients with moderate malnutrition mortality on active treatment at 1 mo was 9.4% compared with 20.9% in patients receiving placebo. This beneficial effect was maintained so that after 6 mo on active treatment 79.7% of patients were still alive, compa

A Hybrid CNN-MLLM Architecture for Image-Based Nutrition Estimation and Advisory Insulin Decision Support in Type 1 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accurate estimation of meal composition from food images can support safer and more reliable insulin bolus decision-making for individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Existing food recognition and nutrition estimation systems are often designed for general dietary logging and do not directly integrate food analysis with personalized insulin therapy parameters. METHODS: This study presents an image-based nutrition estimation and insulin decision-support module developed within the AI-assisted Diabetes Care (AIDCARE) platform. The proposed system uses a convolutional neural net

Pastinaca sativa L.: Nutritional Composition, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacological Properties Supporting Its Potential as a Functional Food and Therapeutic Agent.

Pastinaca sativa L., commonly known as wild parsnip, is a biennial root vegetable (Apiaceae family), bearing a pale carrot-like appearance. Historically cherished for its unique blend of spicy, nutty, and sweet flavor, this Eurasia-originated plant has been widely utilized in culinary traditions including soup, cake, muffin, and pudding as well as in animal feed and even winemaking. Today, its significance extends far beyond gastronomy, as it is increasingly traded across Europe not only as a spice but also for its pharmaceutical and traditional medicinal uses, underscoring the growing interes

American Association for the Surgery of Trauma/American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma clinical protocol for nutrition support in adult trauma.

ABSTRACT: The provision of nutrition in adult trauma patients requires a detailed and personalized approach to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Initial assessment for malnutrition is required in all patients, as the hypermetabolic state of acute trauma may exacerbate malnutrition risk during the acute phase. Initial assessment in ICU patients includes determination of nutrition risk (high vs. low) using the modified NUTRIC or NRS scores and evaluation for malnutrition. In critically ill trauma patients, indirect calorimetry is most accurate for determination of calorie/protein requirements. E

Characteristics of exercise- and nutrition-based continuing education for health-care professionals to support community-living older adults in Canada.

Health-care professionals (HCPs) have an important role in disseminating and implementing exercise and nutrition care to older adults to support aging in place. We performed an environmental scan to examine the availability of exercise- and nutrition-based continuing education (CE) resources for kinesiologists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and pharmacists in Canada relating to the specific needs of community-living older adults. Data were collected between 2023 and 2024 using websites of provincial and national organizations for HCPs, advocacy

Beyond "What Should I Eat to Get Better?": Medical Literacy, Dietary Narratives, and Supportive Nutrition in Hematologic Diseases.

Patients newly diagnosed with hematologic diseases frequently ask, "What should I eat to get better?" This question reflects both a deeply rooted societal narrative linking lifestyle to recovery and a desire for personal agency in moments of vulnerability. Nutrition remains an essential component of supportive care. However, for most malignant and clonal hematologic disorders, there is limited clinical evidence that specific diets or commercially marketed supplements alter disease biology or replace standard therapy. In the digital era, dietary narratives are amplified by social media, online
