Psychosocial factors addressed by occupational therapists in hand therapy: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational therapists address occupations, performance skills, and client factors that interfere with the successful occupational engagement in everyday activities, including psychosocial factors. However, due to the biomechanical model focus within hand therapy clinics, provision of a holistic care plan remains challenging for occupational therapists. If a client's psychosocial functioning is not addressed, progress toward a full recovery may be limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify how occupational therapists who are certified hand therapists (CHTs), addr

[Representations of informal jobs and health risks among housemaids and construction workers].

During the past few decades, the Brazilian labor market has been characterized by an increase of unregistered workers, earning lower wages, not covered by social insurance or occupational risk prevention programs. This study describes the representations and perceptions about informal work contracts and job-related health risks, analyzed in a group of injured unregistered workers. This was a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews carried out with seventeen laborers, nine housemaids and eight construction workers. The findings indicate that workers recognize the importance of formal job

Targeting pupils at risk of occupational asthma.

A cross-sectional study was carried out in pupils attending the last training year from three school sections with high risks of occupational asthma (hairdressing, wood's profession, bakery) and in two groups with lower risks (butcher, salesmen). The analysis concerns a representative sample of 533 pupils in the French-speaking Community of Belgium. Among them, 62.0% in high risk professions of occupational asthma (OA) are conscious of occupational risks related to their work, as were 52.1% of those in professions less at risk (P < 0.05). The difference is also significant when asthma is menti

Occupational dermatoses in hospital cleaning women.

In an investigation of 541 members of a hospital cleaning department, a prevalence rate of occupational skin diseases of 15.3% was found. During their hospital employment, 39.1% had a skin disease. Higher prevalence in the younger age groups can be explained by the selection of those with skin diseases for work away from the cleaning department. A large number developed their disease shortly after employment began. This was an indication that the observed prevalent conditions were irritant diseases. The distribution by diagnosis confirms this conclusion in as much as 75% of the occupational sk

Occupational non-invasive aspergillosis: a national multicenter retrospective study from the French National Network for Occupational and Environmental Disease Monitoring and Prevention (RNV3PE) 2001-2023.

Aspergillosis-related diseases arise from exposure to Aspergillus fungi in diverse work environments but occupational data remain limited. We conducted a multicenter study including all adult cases of occupational non-invasive aspergillosis reported to the French National Network for the Monitoring and Prevention of Occupational and Environmental Diseases (RNV3PE) between 2001 and 2023. Cases were identified on the basis of ICD-10 codes for aspergillosis (group B44 and related) and/or documented occupational exposure to Aspergillus. We aimed to describe clinical features, estimate prevalence,

Tumors of the urinary bladder: an analysis of the occupations of 1,030 patients in Leeds, England.

The whole-life occupational histories of 1,030 patients (812 men and 218 women) with papilloma and carcinoma of the bladder were analyzed. Bladder tumor patients whose smoking habits were known were matched with surgical control patients (340 men and 50 women) and with other cancer patients (312 men and 39 women) for sex, age decade, habitat, and smoking habits. Numbers in the matched pairs in different occupations (Registrar General's Classification of Occupations, 1966) were compared for predominant occupation, occupied at any time, and for 20 years or more. Results were confirmed from the d

[Research progress on early biomarkers for occupational noise-induced hearing loss].

The group of works exposed to occupational noise worldwide is constanthy expanding, with hearing loss becoming a pressing issue that poses serious challenges to public health, economic and society. While current clinical diagnosis primarily relies on elevated hearing thresholds, detectable pre-decibel hearing loss damage has already occurred in the inner ear. Therefore, early biomarkers of noise-induced hearing loss are crucial for the early detection of noise-induced hearing loss and the reduction of the risk of hearing imparment in the occupational population. This article synthesizes the la

A feasibility study of the Redesigning Daily Occupations (ReDOTM-10) programme in an Irish context.

BACKGROUND: Despite high demand, mental health services in primary care in Ireland are underdeveloped. People with mild/moderate anxiety, depression and unspecified psychological distress are frequently seen in primary care settings, mostly by general practitioners (GPs). Occupational therapists have the potential to contribute to service-provision with interventions specially designed for the targeted group e.g. the Redesigning Daily Occupations programme (ReDO-10). AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of a future RCT of the ReDO-10 programme in Ireland and the contex

Men in occupational therapy.

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of male occupational therapists so that better strategies for recruiting men into the profession can be developed and the problem of retaining men in the field can be addressed. Male occupational therapists were surveyed at 3-year intervals, in 1978, 1982, and 1985. Our survey results were compared with results of the 1969 American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Member Data Survey reported by Jantzen (1973), the 1982 AOTA Member Data Survey, and an unpublished study by Watson (1983). The number of professional occupational

Occupational exposure to noise and depression incidence: a nationwide cohort study of workers in Denmark, 2000-2017.

OBJECTIVES: Research on the association between occupational noise and incident depression is limited. We investigated whether long-term occupational noise was associated with depression risk, both independently and in combination with other stress-related factors. METHODS: In a Danish nationwide register-based cohort of 2 424 542 workers aged 25-64 years, individual-level occupational histories were linked to noise exposure using a job exposure matrix. Noise exposure was aggregated as 5-year running means. During follow-up from 2000 to 2017, 142 370 women and 119 900 men developed incident d

Changes in sputum cell counts after exposure to occupational agents: what do they mean?

BACKGROUND: Exposure to occupational agents can induce eosinophilic inflammation in subjects with occupational asthma (OA). It might also induce nonspecific changes in airway inflammation in subjects without OA. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the changes in airway inflammation induced by exposure to occupational agents in subjects with and without OA and to determine which changes in sputum eosinophil numbers and bronchial responsiveness to methacholine should be regarded as clinically significant for predicting a 20% fall in FEV(1). METHODS: We performed specific inhalation challenges
