Occupational Factors Affecting Women Workers' Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes in Oil, Gas, and Mining Industry: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: Globally, female workers workforce in Oil, Gas, and Mining (OGM) industry have increased significantly. The complexities of the OGM operations and the extensive exposure to workplace hazards potentially affect the health status of workers, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes of female workers. Yet, the current state of knowledge on SRH issues in OGM contexts seems to be limited and fragmented. This scoping review aims to identify the occupational factors that influence women's SRH outcomes in OGM industry. Methods: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs

Occupational Exposures and Health Risks of Benzene, Toluene, and Xylenes (BTX) in Automobile Repair Industry in Beijing City, China.

This study aimed to evaluate the occupational health risks of benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) exposure in the automobile repair industry in Beijing city in China. The concentrations of BTX were monitored at 140 operating positions of 51 randomly selected automobile repair enterprises in 2018. Samples analysis showed that all monitoring concentrations were not higher than the occupational exposure limits. The long-term exposure concentration ranges of benzene, toluene, and xylenes were 0.1 to 0.3, 0.1 to 49.7, and 0.2 to 49.5 mg/m3, respectively. The short-term exposure concentration ranges…

Establishing a health-based recommended occupational exposure limit for nitrous oxide using experimental animal data - A systematic review protocol.

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is widely used as inhalation analgesic and anaesthetic in medical, paramedical, and veterinary practice. Previous evaluations resulted in classification of N 2 O as a possible risk factor for adverse reproductive health outcomes based on evidence from animal data. Available human data were considered inadequate, partly due to the possibility that other risk factors, such as co-exposures to other inhalation anaesthetics may have contributed to the adverse outcomes. As no substantial new human evidence has emerged since previous evaluations, this protocol describes a planne

Smoking, Smoking Cessation, and Risk of Mortality in a Japanese Working Population - Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

BACKGROUND: The effect of smoking on mortality in working-age adults remains unclear. Accordingly, we compared the effects of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on total and cause-specific mortality in a Japanese working population. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 79,114 Japanese workers aged 20-85 years who participated in the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study. Deaths and causes of death were identified from death certificates, sick leave documents, family confirmation, and other sources. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were es…

Occupational asthma in Europe and other industrialised areas: a population-based study. European Community Respiratory Health Survey Study Group.

BACKGROUND: There are no large population-based studies on occupational asthma, and few estimates of the proportion of asthma attributed to occupation, even though asthma is the most common occupational respiratory disorder in industrialised countries. METHODS: We assessed data on 15,637 people aged 20-44, randomly selected from the general population of 26 areas in 12 industrialised countries. Asthma was assessed by methacholine challenge test and by questionnaire data on respiratory symptoms and use of medication. Occupation was defined by job-titles and a job exposure matrix was constructe

Occupational exposure to the risk of HIV infection among health care workers in Mwanza Region, United Republic of Tanzania.

During 1993, we collected data on knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, availability of equipment, protective practices and the occurrence of prick and splash incidents in nine hospitals in the Mwanza Region in the north-west of the United Republic of Tanzania. Such incidents were common, with the average health worker being pricked five times and being splashed nine times per year. The annual occupational risk of HIV transmission was estimated at 0.27% for health workers. Among surgeons, the risk was 0.7% (i.e. more than twice as high) if no special protective measures

Structural Relationships Among Positive Occupations, Psychological Distress, Life Functioning, and Well-Being in Community Mental Health.

This cross-sectional study examined associations among positive occupations, psychological distress, life functioning, subjective well-being, and perceived interpersonal difficulties among 276 adults with mental illness receiving community-based mental health services, including psychiatric day hospitals, in Japan. Positive occupations were defined as occupational experiences characterized by personally meaningful engagement, a sense of involvement, opportunities for achievement, and supportive social interaction. Structural equation modeling showed acceptable fit (comparative fit index [CFI]

Association of respiratory health with occupational exposures in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) cohort: a multinational longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposures are contributors to chronic respiratory diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where regulatory policies are limited. We investigated associations between occupational exposures and respiratory outcomes using longitudinal data from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. METHODS: We analysed data from 4237 participants across 17 sites, mostly in LMICs. Occupational exposures were assessed by self-report (never vs ever) and the ALOHA+Job Exposure Matrix for vapours, gases, dusts, fumes (VGDF), pesticides, solvents and metals

Perceptions of respirable crystalline silica exposure in the Australian tunnelling industry: A survey of stakeholders' attitudes to occupational health protections.

OBJECTIVES: Tunnelling is essential for Australia's infrastructure, yet workers can face health risks from respirable crystalline silica exposure. This study explored perceptions of respirable crystalline silica exposure and types of silica-related disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 290 participants with at least six months' tunnelling experience, recruited through industry, union and legal and scientific networks, supplemented by targeted sector outreach. Closed responses were analysed descriptively, Likert scale data were compared across experience groups u

Integrating an occupational therapist into a primary health care team: a mixed-method evaluation of a home-based service delivery.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating occupational therapists (OTs) into primary care requires adapting services to patient needs and depends on how colleagues within the multidisciplinary team perceive the OT roles and collaborate in daily practice. This study explored the feasibility, impact on the care team, and challenges of incorporating an OT into the home-based care service of a Spanish primary healthcare center. METHODS: A two-phase sequential exploratory mixed-methods study was conducted. First, structured interviews and a stakeholder focus group were conducted over the six months following the i

Occupational health topics series on the effects of chemicals: epidemiological and toxicological risk assessments of ortho-toluidine for bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to report integrative evidence for the health risk assessment of ortho-toluidine (OT) in bladder cancer in a mini-review of the recent studies of humans, experimental animals, and OT skin permeability. METHODS: Bladder cancer cases were identified in workers in Japan who were occupationally exposed in 2014-2017 to aromatic amines, primarily to the human carcinogen OT. RESULTS: A key epidemiological study of 98 aromatic amine-exposed workers in Japan showed a clear OT exposure-response relationship with a standardized incidence ratio. A rat model experimental study als
