The current study examines the associations among levels of social support, emotional hiding, and screening positive for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within a sample of 536 Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veterans. The rate of HIV infection in the migrant farm worker community is 10 times the national average. A survey was conducted of 106 female migrant farm workers in rural Northwest Ohio to assess HIV knowledge. The average participant's age was 28.7 years, 78 spoke Spanish, and 47 had an < or =8th- grade education. Fifty-six women received their information on HIV/AIDS from television. Phobic avoidance--avoiding entering specific fear-provoking situations--can severely restrict patients' lives. To determine the frequency with which patients having some degree of phobic avoidance will discuss these fears with their physician and factors in their decision to discuss, a mailed survey was conducted in Franklin County, Ohio. Hydrogen cyanide gas, the most toxic product of combustion, seldom is recognized as a significant hazard in smoke inhalation. During the first four months of 1986, toxic amounts of cyanide were found in four of the six fatalities from house fires in Akron, Ohio. In order to clarify the relationship between stress and sudden death, we reviewed homicidal assaults that occurred in Cuyahoga County, Ohio (metropolitan Cleveland), over the preceding 30 years. Specifically, attention was focused on the autopsy and investigative findings relating to victims who died as a direct result of physical assault without sustaining internal injuries. Using a multi-institutional EMR registry, we extracted housing status and evaluated the presence of several important comorbidities in order to describe the demographics and comorbidity burden of persons experiencing homelessness in northeast Ohio and compare this to non-homeless individuals of varying socioeconomic position. BACKGROUND: Blastomyces dermatitidis is a dimorphic fungus found endemically in the Mississippi and Ohio River basins and in the Midwestern and Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes. Unlike other fungal infections, it most commonly affects immunocompetent hosts. Blastomycosis typically manifests as pulmonary infection, but may affect nearly any organ, including the skin, bone, and genitourinary system.
