PURPOSE: To quantitatively analyze macrophage-like cells (MLCs) at the vitreoretinal interface (VRI) in acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) using en face swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Twenty-five acute NAION eyes and 25 normal fellow eyes from 25 patients were included in the study. MLCs were visualized in a 3 μm 6 mm×6 mm en face OCT slab above the VRI centered on the optic nerve head (ONH). After semiautomatic binarization and quantification, we evaluated the MLC density between the two groups. We also investigated the relationship betwe

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine changes to optic disc characteristics and macular choroidal microvasculature, and their relationships in young patients with high myopia (HM).
METHODS: A total of 90 patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Based on their refractive power, the patients were divided into three groups: 27 in the control group, 34 in the HM group and 29 in the extremely high myopia group. Images of each patient's macula and optic disc were taken by ocular coherence tomography angiography. The macular choroidal and retinal thickness, capillary vessel density an

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new technology of angiography which features multiple advantages over the traditional ones. It can provide a rapid and noninvasive approach to observing the vascular morphology and blood vessel density of the optic disc, peripapillary and macular area. Nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is an acute optic neuropathy characterized by a sudden, painless decrease in vision and a typical visual field defect. It has been widely accepted that the circulatory insufficiency of the optic nerve head (ONH) mainly supplied by the posterior ci

Injury to the optic nerve may occur after seemingly minor trauma. Evulsion of the nerve from the globe may be partial or complete as a result of several concussive or rotational forces. A depressed or visibly absent lamina cribrosa indicates a disinsertion of the nerve fibers from the globe. Visual loss ranges from severe to complete. Transections of the optic nerve within the orbit generally occur after penetrating orbital injuries or surgical resection, resulting in complete blindness. Medical or surgical intervention has not been shown to improve the visual prognosis once such injuries occu

Purpose: We employed automated analysis of scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) to determine if mechanical strains imposed on disc, and retinal and choroidal vessels during horizontal duction in children differ from those of adults. Methods: Thirty-one children aged 11.3 ± 2.7 (standard deviation) years underwent SLO in central gaze, and 35° ab- and adduction. Automated registration with deep learning-based optical flow analysis quantified vessel deformations as horizontal, vertical, shear, and equivalent strains. Choroidal vessel displacements in lightly pigmented fundi, and central disc vessel

BACKGROUND: Optic disc swelling poses a diagnostic challenge due to its multiple underlying pathological causes. This study aimed to investigate the use of fluorescein angiography (FLA) in combination with optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a diagnostic tool for differentiating between papilledema and papillitis in cases of optic disc swelling.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 12 patients were included in the study in whom both FLA and OCT of the optic disc were performed to evaluate the optic disc swelling in cases of papilledema (7 patients, 14 eyes) and papillitis (5 patients, 7 eyes).

BACKGROUND: Duplication of the optic disc is a rare phenomenon. Differentiating between true duplication and pseudo-duplication requires a comprehensive set of diagnostic procedures. Advancements in imaging provide new insights into this condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report details a unique case involving an 8-year-old Han Chinese girl diagnosed with uveal colobomas and pseudo-duplication of the optic disc in both eyes. The extensive multimodal examination included assessments of vision, fundus examination, fundus photography, B-scan ultrasonography, ultra-widefield swept-source optical

PURPOSE: Lamina cribrosa (LC) deformation is hypothesized to play a major role in glaucoma pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to determine in vivo how varying intraocular pressure (IOP) under fixed intracranial pressure (ICP), and vice versa, deforms the pore paths throughout the LC volume.
METHODS: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography scans of the optic nerve head were acquired from healthy adult rhesus monkeys under different pressures. IOP and ICP were controlled with gravity-based perfusion systems into the anterior chamber and lateral ventricle, respectively. IOP and ICP

PURPOSE: To investigate morphological and microcirculation changes of optic nerve head (ONH) in simple high myopia (SHM) and pathologic myopia(PM) to evaluate and identify ONH changes in the development of PM.
METHODS: A cross-sectional clinical study was used. Medical records from 193 right eyes of 193 patients with high myopia (HM) were included. Using the Topocon swept source optical coherence tomograph (SS-OCT) and fundus camera to detect the parameters, we have assessed the relative position and size of ONH, tilt and rotation of ONH, angle α (Defined as between retinal temporal arterial

Glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) is the major cause of irreversible visual loss worldwide and can result from a range of disease etiologies. The defining features of GON are retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration and characteristic cupping of the optic nerve head (ONH) due to tissue remodeling, while intraocular pressure remains the only modifiable GON risk factor currently targeted by approved clinical treatment strategies. Efforts to understand the mechanisms that allow species such as the zebrafish to regenerate their retinal cells have greatly increased our understanding of regenerati

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationships between optic nerve cupping and total and regional brain volumes.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of randomized clinical trial data.
METHODS: Women 65 to 79 years of age without glaucoma with cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) measurements from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Sight Examination study and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based total and regional brain volumes from the WHI Memory Study MRI-1 were included. Large CDR was defined as 0.6 or greater in either eye. Generalized estimating equation models were used to account for intra-brain correlations

The optic nerve head (ONH) represents the intraocular section of the optic nerve, which is prone to damage by intraocular pressure (IOP). The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enabled the evaluation of novel ONH parameters, namely the depth and curvature of the lamina cribrosa (LC). Together with the Bruch's membrane minimum-rim-width (BMO-MRW), these seem to be promising ONH parameters for diagnosis and monitoring of retinal diseases such as glaucoma. Nonetheless, these OCT derived biomarkers are mostly extracted through manual segmentation, which is time-consuming and prone to

IMPORTANCE: Deep learning (DL) networks require large data sets for training, which can be challenging to collect clinically. Generative models could be used to generate large numbers of synthetic optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to train such DL networks for glaucoma detection.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether generative models can synthesize circumpapillary optic nerve head OCT images of normal and glaucomatous eyes and determine the usability of synthetic images for training DL models for glaucoma detection.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Progressively growing generative adversar

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to correct refractive error-associated bias in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) glaucoma diagnostic parameters.
METHODS: OCT and OCTA imaging were obtained from participants in the Hong Kong FAMILY cohort. The Avanti/AngioVue OCT/OCTA system was used to measure the peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness (NFLT), peripapillary nerve fiber layer plexus capillary density (NFLP-CD), macular ganglion cell complex thickness (GCCT), and macular superficial vascular complex vascular density (SVC-VD). Healthy eyes, including ones wi
