Kinetic modeling with total body PET-current status and future applications.

Total-body and long axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET/CT systems have transformed kinetic modeling from a regional research tool into a whole-body quantitative imaging approach. Unlike static SUV-based imaging, kinetic analysis provides physiologically meaningful parameters describing tracer transport, metabolism, and receptor binding. Historically limited by short axial coverage and low sensitivity, dynamic PET studies were confined to single organs and required invasive arterial sampling. LAFOV scanners, offering axial coverage of up to 2 m and >10-fold sensitivity gains, enable simultaneous m

Pelvic floor dysfunction: Anatomical characterization and functional imaging with MRI defecography.

Pelvic floor dysfunction encompasses a spectrum of disorders characterized by organ descent, muscular weakness, and impaired coordination across the anterior, middle, and posterior compartments. MRI defecography has become an established non-invasive technique for comprehensive assessment of both static anatomy and dynamic function of the pelvic floor. This review describes the MRI defecography technique, protocol components, and quantitative parameters that provide an objective evaluation of pelvic floor dysfunction. Standard MRI defecography protocol incorporates resting, contraction, strain

Bioresorbable-bioactive auxetic "personalised" phalanx with a CT-guided AI-driven model towards in vivo prediction of bone regeneration.

Trauma and diseases such as gangrene, diabetes mellitus, leprosy, or advanced-stage cancer requiring resections may lead to digit loss due to the limited capacity of tissue regeneration. The increasing global incidence of phalanx fractures necessitates surgical intervention for restoring organ function. Early mobilization post-surgery significantly improves the range of motion and overall functional outcomes, emphasizing the need for mechanically stable and biologically responsive solutions. In this study, a CT-derived, site-specific "personalized" phalanx reconstruction was fabricated using b

Shape-aware Segmentation of the Placenta in BOLD Fetal MRI Time Series.

Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) MRI time series with maternal hyperoxia can assess placental oxygenation and function. Measuring precise BOLD changes in the placenta requires accurate temporal placental segmentation and is confounded by fetal and maternal motion, contractions, and hyperoxia-induced intensity changes. Current BOLD placenta segmentation methods warp a manually annotated subject-specific template to the entire time series. However, as the placenta is a thin, elongated, and highly non-rigid organ subject to large deformations and obfuscated edges, existing work cannot accurate

A Wearable RF Sensor for Monitoring Respiratory Patterns.

We present a non-invasive approach for continuous monitoring of respiration dynamics using a wearable radio-frequency (RF) sensor based on near-field coherent sensing. A continuous-wave RF signal at 1.8 GHz is generated by a software-defined radio, with both transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) antennas placed close to the xiphoid process. The experimental prototype of the mobile sensor can modulate the internal organ motion in the near-field region of the Tx antenna and is then received by the nearby Rx antenna to be demodulated and sampled. Through peak detection, we have identified inhalation…

Design, simulation and modelling of auxiliary exoskeleton to improve human gait cycle.

Exoskeleton is a walking assistance device that improves human gait cycle through providing auxiliary force and transferring physical load to the stronger muscles. This device takes the natural state of organ and follows its natural movement. Exoskeleton functions as an auxiliary device to help those with disabilities in hip and knee such as devotees, elderly farmers and agricultural machinery operators who suffer from knee complications. In this research, an exoskeleton designed with two screw jacks at knee and hip joints. To simulate extension and flexion movements of the leg joints, bearing

The use of an endothelium-targeted cationic copolymer to enhance the barrier function of lung capillary endothelial monolayers.

Acute changes in lung capillary permeability continue to complicate procedures such as cardiopulmonary bypass, solid organ transplant, and major vascular surgery and precipitate the more severe disease state Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). To date there is no treatment targeted directly to the lung microvasculature. We hypothesized that biomimetic polymers could be used to enhance passive barrier function by reducing the porosity of the endothelial glycocalyx and attenuate mechanotransduction by restricting the motion of the glycoproteins implicated in signal transduction. To this

Gas embolism and surfactant-based intervention: implications for long-duration space-based activity.

Intravascular gas embolism can occur with decompression in space flight, and it commonly occurs during cardiac and vascular surgery. Intravascular bubbles may be deposited into any end organ such as the heart or the brain. Surface interactions between the bubble and the endothelial cells lining the vasculature result in serious impairment of blood flow and can lead to heart attack, stroke, or even death. Surfactant-based intervention is a novel treatment for gas embolism. Intravascular surfactant can adsorb onto the gas-liquid interface and compete with blood-borne macromolecules for interfaci

Intermodulation distortion (F2-F1) in inner hair cell and basilar membrane responses.

Round window (RW) recordings in guinea pigs show a large response at the frequency of the quadratic difference tone (QDT) at F2-F1 for high-frequency (> 8 kHz) tone pairs. The magnitude of the RW response is dependent on frequency and level of the primaries. The QDT cochlear microphonic produced is largest for primaries with a frequency separation of approximately 900 Hz. Its source is probably the local activity of hair cells in basal cochlear locations where the high-frequency tones interact. QDT measurements from locations inside the organ of Corti show that the magnitude of the QDT is larg

Effects of salicylate on organ-of-Corti vibrations in the second turn of the gerbil cochlea.

Sound-evoked responses of the organ of Corti (OoC) in the living cochlea are enhanced by active processes driven by outer hair cells (OHCs). To assess how suppression of OHC function affects intracochlear mechanics, we applied salicylate-a blocker of OHC electromotility-to the round window of anesthetized Mongolian gerbils and measured both distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and sound-evoked vibrations of the OoC in the second cochlear turn using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Salicylate reduced DPOAE amplitudes in a time- and frequency-dependent manner and decreased intrac

Active micro- and nanorobots for controlled immune modulation in protected pathological niches.

Immune therapies often underperform in anatomically protected sites. Dense tumour stroma, mucus, biofilms, fibrin-rich matrices and intracellular compartments can prevent an intervention from reaching the cells that determine outcome. Organ-level exposure may still be measurable. Conventional nanocarriers improve cargo stability and biodistribution, but usually provide little control after deposition. Micro- and nanorobotic systems add propulsion, steering, mechanical work or triggered release. Their value depends on the bottleneck being addressed and on the performance of the best matched pas

Kinematic signature of high risk labored breathing revealed by novel signal analysis.

Breathing patterns (respiratory kinematics) contain vital prognostic information. This dimension of physiology is not captured by conventional vital signs. We sought to determine the feasibility and utility of quantifying respiratory kinematics. Using inertial sensors, we analyzed upper rib, lower rib, and abdominal motion of 108 patients with respiratory symptoms during a hospital encounter (582 two-minute recordings). We extracted 34 features based on an explainable correspondence with well-established breathing patterns. K-means clustering revealed that respiratory kinematics had three dime

Surgical Robot for Intraluminal Access: An Ex Vivo Feasibility Study.

Early-stage gastrointestinal cancer is often treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) using a flexible endoscope. Compared with conventional percutaneous surgery, ESD is much less invasive and provides a high quality of life for the patient because it does not require a skin incision, and the organ is preserved. However, the operator must be highly skilled because ESD requires using a flexible endoscope with energy devices, which have limited degrees of freedom. To facilitate easier manipulation of these flexible devices, we developed a surgical robot comprising a flexible endoscope a

Analysis of human microcirculation in weightlessness: Study protocol and pre-study experiments.

BACKGROUND: In weightlessness, alterations in organ systems have been reported. The microcirculation consists of a network of blood vessels with diameters of a few μm. It is considered the largest part of the circulatory system of the human body and essential for exchange of gas, nutrients and waste products. An investigation of the microcirculation in weightlessness seems warranted but has not yet been performed. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we outline a study in which we will investigate the possible interrelations between weightlessness and microcirculation. We will induce weightlessness in t

Dissociation of early shock in takotsubo cardiomyopathy from either right or left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is often associated with hypotension and shock. However, development of hypotension/shock in TTC is not closely related to extent of left ventricular (LV) hypokinesis. We sought to determine whether additional right ventricular (RV) involvement in TTC might contribute to hypotension and shock development and thus to prolonged hospital stay (PHS). METHODS: We evaluated 102 consecutive TTC patients with acute transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) to detect RV hypokinesis. Correlates of hypotension, shock and PHS were identified by univariate and multiva

Factors affecting reflex pelvic floor muscle contraction patterns in women with pelvic floor disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To explore factors affecting the presence of two reflex pelvic floor muscle contraction (PFMC) patterns in women with pelvic floor disorders. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of pelvic floor ultrasonography and urodynamic data for 667 consecutive symptomatic women with pelvic floor disorders. We identified on ultrasonography the presence or absence of two reflex PFMC patterns, anorectal lift (ARL) and inward clitoral motion (ICM), preceding or occurring during coughing, and evaluated their associations with possible factors affecting reflex PFMC reactivity, including pati
