Trace element profiles in murine Lewis lung carcinoma by radioisotope-induced X-ray fluorescence.

Trace element profiles of various body tissues and tumor were established during growth of the Lewis lung tumor (LLT) with the use of radioisotope-induced X-ray fluorescence (RIXRF) analysis. The LLT, a highly malignant experimental murine tumor, resembles its human counterpart, has a well-defined life cycle, and kills its host in 30 days. When compared with normal controls, Zn, Br, and Rb levels in lung, liver, and skeletal muscle and Zn and Sr levels in bone from tumor-bearing mice exhibited large fluctuations at critical points in the tumor life cycle. In addition, the 24-day primary tumor

Brachioradial Pruritus and Notalgia Paraesthetica: A Comparative Observational Study of Clinical Presentation and Morphological Pathologies.

Brachioradial pruritus (BRP) and notalgia paraesthetica (NP) represent 2 of the most common neuropathic itch syndromes. A total of 58 consecutive patients presenting at the Center for Chronic Pruritus, University Hospital Münster, were analysed with regard to clinical presentation, anatomical and morphological pathologies, impairment in quality of life, and response to treatment with topical capsaicin. Patients with BRP reported stinging and burning more often than those with NP. In the BRP group structural magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities more frequently correlated with localization o

Isolated plasmacytoma of the sternal stalk: a case report and review of the literature

Background: Isolated plasmacytoma of bone is a malignant neoplasm of haematologic origin with a low incidence and a tendency to progress to multiple myeloma, and surgical treatment may improve patient survival. Case presentation: We review the case of a 77-year-old man with isolated plasmacytoma of the sternal stalk whose main symptom was pain in the anterior chest wall, which was severe and severely interfered with life. He was treated through extended radical resection of the sternal stalk tumour, including bilateral partial rib cartilage resection, bilateral clavicle head resection, cervica

Pulsatile Tinnitus: A Narrative Review.

Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a symptom consisting of the perception of sound without an external stimulus, synchronized with the patient's heartbeat. It accounts for 4% of all tinnitus cases. The most common etiologies are vascular, including carotid stenosis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, sinus stenosis, aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations. The diagnostic approach involves a complete history and clinical examination to determine if PT is of arterial or venous origin and to guide imaging studies. Treatment ranges from lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapy to minimally

The age of adult pilocytic astrocytoma cells.

Adult pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) have been regarded as indistinguishable from pediatric PAs in terms of genome-wide expression and methylation patterns. It has been unclear whether adult PAs arise early in life and remain asymptomatic until adulthood, or whether they develop during adulthood. We sought to determine the age and origin of adult human PAs using two types of "marks" in the genomic DNA. First, we analyzed the DNA methylation patterns of adult and pediatric PAs to distinguish between PAs of different anatomic locations (n = 257 PA and control brain tissues). Second, we measured th

Anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary artery. Case report and review of literature concerning teen-agers and adults.

An adult with angina was found to have anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA). Review of the literature regarding this anomaly in teen-agers and adults disclosed only 25 cases diagnosed during life. Eighteen additional cases of ALCAPA in this age group have been diagnosed post mortem. In this report, we will review the management of teen-agers and adults in whom ALCAPA was correctly diagnosed during life. We shall also describe the eighth case of successful aorta-left coronary artery grafting with the saphenous vein in this age group. This case brings t

The immunology of Epstein-Barr virus-induced disease.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is usually acquired silently early in life and carried thereafter as an asymptomatic infection of the B lymphoid system. However, many circumstances disturb the delicate EBV-host balance and cause the virus to display its pathogenic potential. Thus, primary infection in adolescence can manifest as infectious mononucleosis (IM), as a fatal illness that magnifies the immunopathology of IM in boys with the X-linked lymphoproliferative disease trait, and as a chronic active disease leading to life-threatening hemophagocytosis in rare cases of T or natural killer (NK) cell

Dissecting the Origins of an Incidental Aortic Pseudoaneurysm: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dissections are life-threatening emergencies characterized by an intimal tear within the aortic wall, resulting in a false lumen. Progressive aortic dilation following repair may predispose patients to aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm formation, increasing the risk of rupture and fatal complications. CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old man with prior type A (DeBakey type 1) aortic dissection repair presented with acute chest pain and was found to be in a hypertensive emergency with residual aortic dissection. Despite aggressive blood pressure and heart rate control, imaging demonstrated

Long-term functional outcome of patients following the mustard procedure: the next decade of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 10 years ago, we studied a population of patients with d-transposition of the great arteries (DTGA) who had undergone the Mustard procedure 8-26 years earlier. The present study was undertaken to determine how that cohort of patients is currently functioning. METHODS: Of the 45 original patients, 44 were located. Six (13%) had either died (n = 4) or received a cardiac transplant (n = 2). In total, 35 of the remaining 38 patients (78%) chose to undergo testing. Systemic right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) was estimated using radionuclide angiocardiography. Exercise st

Evolutionary perspectives on substance and behavioural addictions: Distinct and shared pathways to understanding, prediction and prevention.

Addiction poses significant social, health, and criminal issues. Its moderate heritability and early-life impact, affecting reproductive success, poses an evolutionary paradox: why are humans predisposed to addictive behaviours? This paper reviews biological and psychological mechanisms of substance and behavioural addictions, exploring evolutionary explanations for the origin and function of relevant systems. Ancestrally, addiction-related systems promoted fitness through reward-seeking, and possibly self-medication. Today, psychoactive substances disrupt these systems, leading individuals to

Butterfly Effect - the Concept and the Implications in Dermatology, Acne, and Rosacea.

Acne and Rosacea are chronic inflammatory skin diseases with an increasing frequency and an important negative impact on the quality of life, which are associated with a large number of false myths regarding causes and treatment. The butterfly effect is associated with chaos theory, and it is a concept originated in meteorology, which represents the dependence on initial conditions.

Delayed diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia in a premature female infant.

A preterm female infant was diagnosed with congenital adrenal hyperplasia after the first month of life. Electrolyte abnormalities and prominent clitoris were originally attributed to the prematurity of the infant. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia was confirmed when the abnormalities persisted. Delay in diagnosis can be prevented with the installation of newborn screening programs.

Lesser known aspects of Ludwik Fleck's (1896-1961) heroic life during World War II.

Professor Ludwik Fleck was a famous scientist and a prominent philosopher. Although his life and work were studied extensively, the Second World War period was a subject of some discussion and controversy. On account of his Jewish origin, he was first arrested and moved from the Lwów ghetto to the 'Laokoon' factory and then imprisoned in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau and in KL Buchenwald. Fleck produced the anti-typhus vaccine in the chemo-bacteriological laboratory in the Jewish Hospital at Kuszewicza Street and in the 'Laokoon' factory in Lwów. During his incarceration in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, Flec

The relationship between eruption and length of mandibular incisors in young rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether women raised in a family with substance abuse constitute a particularly vulnerable group of patients in an infant psychiatry setting and to identify the risk factors of suspected parental malfunctioning in women referred to treatment in an infant and toddler intervention program. BACKGROUND: A history of family substance abuse can severely disrupt the caretaking abilities of parents in ways that can have far-reaching consequences, and children growing up with insufficient parental care may incorporate this deficiency into their own parental behavior. METHODS

Psychometric Validation of a Short-Form Spanish Low Vision Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-SLVQOL) Using Rasch Analysis: From 25 to 6 Items.

INTRODUCTION: The Spanish Low Vision Quality of Life Questionnaire (SLVQOL) assesses vision-related quality of life effectively but requires significant administration time. This study aimed to develop and validate a psychometrically robust short-form version (SF-SLVQOL) using Rasch analysis to reduce respondent burden while maintaining measurement precision in Spanish-speaking populations with visual impairment. METHODS: Data from the original SLVQOL validation study (n = 365; 170 visually impaired, 195 controls) were reanalysed using Partial Credit Model analysis in WINSTEPS. Items were sys

Renovascular hypertension resulting from nonspecific aortoarteritis in children: midterm results of percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty and predictors of restenosis.

OBJECTIVE: Nonspecific aortoarteritis is a major cause of renovascular hypertension in children. Stenosis of the renal artery is usually long and begins at the origin of that artery. We retrospectively studied the midterm results of angioplasty during treatment and defined the predictors of restenosis in 40 stenoses in 24 children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients had clinically inactive disease and hemodynamically significant stenosis causing hypertension. Midterm results were analyzed by the life table method. The effect of clinical, angiographic, and technical factors on the restenosis

Efficacy of pharmacologic treatment in tinnitus patients without specific or treatable origin: A network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Although tinnitus has a prevalence between 20 and 42.8%, the currently recommended management for tinnitus, such as tinnitus support and psychologic therapies, are relatively time-consuming and expensive. Several new pharmacologic treatments designed for tinnitus patients without specific origin had been developed but their efficacy remains unclear. METHODS: The current Network Meta-Analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different pharmacologic treatments for tinnitus management in tinnitus patients without specific or treat

Multiple Dermoid Cysts in the Epiglottis Presenting with Dysphonia and Dysphagia: A Rare Case.

Dermoid cysts are developmental anomalies that occur during midline fusion in embryological life. It is known that they can also be acquired as a result of traumatic and iatrogenic implantation. Laryngeal involvement of dermoid cysts has been reported very rarely in the literature. This report presents a case with multiple dermoid cysts originating from the epiglottis. A 59-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of foreign body sensation in the throat and dysphagia. Multiple cystic lesions originating from the epiglottis were observed in the laryngeal examination of t

Right pulmonary artery arising from ascending aorta: report of a successfully treated case.

A nine-day-old neonate presented with signs of congestive heart failure during the first week of life. The echocardiogram showed an early bifurcating great vessel originating from the left ventricle. In addition, there was another vessel originating from the right ventricle directly connected to the descending aorta without early branching into the bilateral pulmonary arteries. A muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD) was also found. Cardiac catheterization and angiography showed that: 1) the anomalous origin of the right pulmonary artery arose from the ascending aorta; 2) a large patent duc

Ever-present factors in healthy children that can deform their spines. Opposition to Dickson's paradigm on lordosis.

Revision of older knowledge on spinal deformities shows causing factors in all day life and the source of rotational forces in men in respiration. The role of lordosis as a causative factor can change towards a correcting force, supported by different studies. The thoracolumbar spine is the originating area of many deforming processes.
