One hundred fifty-five unselected obstructive sleep apneic patients seen in succession had cephalometric roentgenograms and polygraphic recordings performed. These patients were compared to a group of 41 subjects who had consulted orthodontists for malocclusion and had no clinical indication of sleep apnea. The cephalometric landmarks were also compared to those published as normative data in the literature. The limits of "normalcy" were conservatively defined as mean +/- 2 standard deviations. Only two obstructive sleep apneic patients had normal cephalometric landmarks and 150 of the 155 pat…

INTRODUCTION: To correct bilateral Class II malocclusions or Class II subdivisions, various therapeutic options are available to the orthodontist, depending on the patient and the amount of tooth movement required. Retro-tuberosity screws (RTSs) represent one such alternative; however, they remain poorly documented in the literature. The aim of this article is to present a series of cases managed using RTSs.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: Four cases treated with RTSs are presented.
DISCUSSION: RTSs enabled effective sequential distalization. Adverse effects were limited, except for the risk of vestib

Slow maxillary expansion is a technique used to achieve correction of maxillary transverse deficiency or posterior crossbite in patients where the midpalatal suture has closed. This is mostly achieved by buccal tipping of maxillary posterior teeth. The aim of this case report is to discuss the orthodontic treatment of a 20-year-old patient with bilateral posterior crossbite. The patient had moderate maxillary crowding and severe mandibular crowding, crossbites bilaterally on his posterior teeth, and maxillary lateral incisors. The patient had thin gingival biotype with gingival recession on th

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Third molars are often removed in order to prevent complications and various other problems associated with impacted teeth.
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 17-year-old girl with no history was referred to the Department of Oral Surgery by her orthodontist to remove mandibular third-molar germs. Panoramic radiography showed the presence of impacted mandibular third-molar germs, vertically positioned, with incomplete root formation. The tooth germs (48, 38) were extracted under local-regional anesthesia. The postoperative period was uneventful.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Ge

Mandibular incisor crowding is a frequently encountered problem in daily orthodontic treatment. Success of the treatment greatly depends on the orthodontist's ability to manage the factors contributing to the existing crowding and implementing the proper interceptive means. The passive lower lingual holding arch (LLHA) helps maintain the position of the permanent first molars after the exfoliation of primary molars and canines. Thus, relieving the mandibular incisor crowding during transitional dentition. Four case reports age ranged from 11-13.5 years old were used to report the effect of usi

When orthodontic patients desire shorter treatment times with aesthetic results and long-term stability, it is important for the orthodontist to understand the potential limitations and problems that may arise during standard and/or technology-assisted accelerated treatment. Bone density plays an important role in facilitating orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), such that reductions in bone density can significantly increase movement velocity. Lifestyle, genetic background, environmental factors, and disease status all can influence a patients' overall health and bone density. In some individual

Adult orthodontics has been an area of increasing focus in recent times. Comprehensive treatment of adults is more challenging due to a myriad of problems that coexist in an adult that makes treatment planning more challenging. A large number of individuals seek dental care because of aesthetic reasons, that is, the desire to look more attractive by improving their smiles. The role an attractive smile plays on a person's self-image and confidence cannot be overemphasized. Evaluating and treating patients for the purpose of smile design often involves a multi-discipline approach. Achieving an i

Congenitally missing lateral incisors are a common clinical occurrence. Dental Implants have become a primary treatment option for replacement of these teeth. Many times in prosthodontic treatment planning a multidisciplinary approach is needed for a comprehensive out come. Prosthodontic treatment planning is needed prior to the patient's consultation and following treatment acceptance; the prosthodontist may need to coordinate treatment needs with other specialists, including an orthodontist and an implant surgeon. This article describes multidisciplinary management of a case presenting with

Regional odontodysplasia, or "ghost teeth," is a dental abnormality derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth bud. Teeth within a particular quadrant are affected. Affected teeth usually have thin enamel and dentin of poor quality with shortened roots, open apices, or enlarged pulp chambers. The permanent teeth and maxillary arch are observed to be more severely affected than primary teeth and the mandibular arch (ratio=1.6:1), respectively. Eruption of the affected teeth is delayed or may not happen. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown. Since this problem affects

Orthodontic treatment can cause resorptions on teeth. Factors causing resorptions are forces and moments. Other factors that cause resorptions are less influenced by an orthodontic treatment. By carrying out experiments and finite element calculations, it was possible to demonstrate that forces and moments will produce stress in certain parts of the periodontal ligament and the root. This stress reaches or exceeds the blood pressure in some areas. To avoid high pressure in those areas, new treatment devices were constructed consisting of NiTi wires or a combination of NiTi and stainless steel.

Impacted permanent canines in a child, particularly in the maxilla, pose a functional as well as an esthetic concern for the patient and parents alike. Informing the parties involved that all the permanent canines are impacted is, needless to say, a distressful dilemma for the parents and a unique challenge for the orthodontist. The response to the treatment in this case was quite acceptable. All 4 canines were properly aligned with the aid of orthodontic traction and surgical assistance, and now the patient possesses confidence to smile and has enhanced self-esteem. There is no additional cos

For a complete overall rehabilitation of cleft palate patients a multi-disciplinary approach should be adopted. Plastic and Head and Neck Surgeons in whom most of the treatment are entrusted should be concerned not only at achieving palatal function and cosmetic acceptability but also the various other problems associated with cleft palate especially hearing loss. In this study, 66 patients with repaired and unrepaired cleft palates were examined for the presence of hearing loss due to middle ear effusion. The incidence of middle ear effusion was high (57.6%). It was also found that only eight

Cephalometric distances, angles, and proportions were evaluated for 32 children 5 to 8 years of age treated for unilateral cleft lip and palate. The children were age and sex matched with untreated controls with normal skeletal relationships. The unilateral cleft lip and palate sample was treated by the same surgeon and orthodontist using the same techniques and appliances. Measures of overall facial proportions, facial convexity, and prognathism were not significantly different between the two groups. The primary group differences pertain to the posterior aspect of the maxilla, which is verti

Mandibular prognathism combined with a retrognathic maxilla is a skeletal discrepancy that is difficult to correct. We report a case of a 25-year-old Saudi male patient with skeletal class-III malocclusion due to severe prognathic mandible who was referred to an orthodontist at Prince Sultan Military Medical City. Complete clinical examination, radiographic assessment, and study models revealed class-III malocclusion due to anteroposterior deficiency of the maxilla and severe prognathic mandible. Orthognathic surgery was performed 18 months after the presurgical orthodontic phase. A 10-mm LeFo

Standard TMJ is the key to the morphology of the face as it enables the occlusive function and spatially situates the chin. The diagnosis of the temporomandibular joint disorders is made intricate not only by the multifactorial etiology of these pathologies but also by the difficulty to comprehend the pain felt by the patient. Through a review of the literature and our respective practices (over 30 years) and teachings, this article surveys the main principles of temporomandibular joint disorder. As numerous writers have focused on the problems created by TMJ pathologies, it's only natural tha

This case report presents the unique treatment of a patient with varying asymmetries at different levels within the face. The patient was a 17-year-old male with a diagnosis of right unilateral coronal synostosis. He had frontal and superior orbital retrusion on the fused side, and bossing of the contralateral side. The middle and lower portions of his face were rotated toward the nonfused side. This unique diagnosis presented particular challenges to surgical and orthodontic correction. The treatment approach, which included a combination of Le Fort I and II osteotomies, bilateral sagittal sp

OBJECTIVES: A skeletal anterior open-bite is a challenging malocclusion for the orthodontist due to the difficulty and instability of correction. Treatment options for the adult patient include extractions, anterior extrusion with intermaxillary elastics, posterior intrusion using skeletal anchorage, occlusal adjustment, and orthognathic surgery. Patient compliance plays a key role in posttreatment stability. The present case report demonstrates the orthodontic treatment of an adult patient who presented with a complex open-bite malocclusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment involved the plac

Pseudo class III malocclusion is reverse anterior occlusion or anterior cross-bite with first molars and canines in a class I relationship. It is very important to diagnose the pseudo class III from true skeletal class III. The combination of anterior displacement of the mandible, tooth wear, and loss of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in adults may result anterior cross-bite. The key factor in diagnosis of this malocclusion is an interdisciplinary approach with an orthodontist. Cephalometric images are essential for diagnosis of pseudo class III mal-occlusion.
