Greater trochanter-sparing proximal femoral resection (PFR) is a surgical option for managing painful hips in children with cerebral palsy (CP) however, data on postoperative outcomes remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the radiographic and functional outcomes of greater trochanter-sparing PFR in this population. This retrospective study included all nonambulatory CP patients [Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) IV-V] who underwent greater trochanter-sparing PFR as the standard hip salvage procedure at a single tertiary center. Nineteen patients were initially identified

Eighteen hip fusions were converted to total hip replacements. A constrained acetabular liner was used in three hips. Mean follow up was five years (two to 15). Two (11%) hips failed, requiring revision surgery and two patients (11%) had injury to the peroneal nerve. Heterotopic ossification developed in seven (39%) hips, in one case resulting in joint ankylosis. No hips dislocated. Conversion of hip fusion to hip replacement carries an increased risk of heterotopic ossification and neurological injury. We advise prophylaxis against heterotropic ossification. When there is concern about hip st

AIM: T o present the clinical findings of a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), highlighting peculiarities of dental treatment in patients with this condition.
BACKGROUND: FOP is a rare genetic disease characterized by skeletal malformations and ectopic ossifications in skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments and aponeurosis. Exacerbation of these ossifications can be caused by dental treatment, resulting in disease progression.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 26-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of FOP was referred to our service for dental treatment. The patient presented decre

The article reports the occurrence of osteochondroma in a fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva patient. A 5-year-old boy presented with limited mouth opening and firm swelling of the right zygomatic complex area. The boy had bilateral hallux valgus of the great toes and heterotopic endochondral ossification of facial and neck regions. Associated osteochondroma of the coronoid process and aggressive heterotopic ossification of masticatory and neck muscles were found in response to traumatic injuries. Natural and clinical histories of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva were reviewed. An earl

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification of a vascular pedicle is an uncommon, but established, phenomenon occasionally seen incidentally on post-operative imaging after fibular free flap reconstruction. Symptomatic cases of pedicle ossification, however, are much rarer, with very few cases requiring operative intervention. We present the largest case of pedicle ossification recorded to date, review the literature on symptomatic pedicle ossification, and describe our experience with the surgical management and outcomes of this complication in symptomatic patients.

In this study, we present a 36-year-old male patient who developed heterotopic ossification after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction performed using bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft harvested from the 1/3 middle part of the patellar tendon. This ossified part, which restricted range of motion of the affected knee, was excised surgically 1 year after diagnosis. Physical examination, conducted 36 months later, revealed the achievement of full range of motion without any complaints or recurrences. Heterotopic ossification following ACL reconstruction is a very rare complication, w

A 42-year-old man presented with acute left hemiplegia due to a right frontotemporal hemorrhagic stroke and left-sided pain. While the initial presentation suggested central poststroke pain, subsequent investigations also implicated heterotopic ossification of the left hip and amplification of previous low back pain by the new central pain. While heterotopic ossification has been commonly associated with brain injury, spinal cord injury or osseous injury, it is only rarely associated with stroke. Poststroke pain may be multifactorial, and discovering the pain mechanisms has important implicati

Contractures of the elbow after burn injury are frequent and are often connected with other contractions. Surgical correction must take into consideration the topography, the likelihood of possible heterotopic ossification and the condition of the surrounding skin. A study of 66 contractures allowed us to reach the following conclusions: Linear contractures surrounded by normal skin require IC-type local flaps. Widespread contractures can be treated with thoracic flaps if healthy skin remains or else with the 'backwards flap'. Surgery on existing associated heterotopic ossification must be in

We present the findings on 201Tl and 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy in three patients suffering from heterotopic ossification (two patients presenting with myositis ossificans and one patient presenting with juxta-articular ossification in combination with myositis ossificans). Since resection of the lesions has to be delayed until stabilization, 99mTc-MDP is often used as a parameter of lesional activity, although it is not optimal. For this clinical problem, we evaluated 201Tl scintigraphy as a marker of metabolic activity. In addition to the well-documented uptake of 99mTc-MDP, marked accumulation

Surgically resected thumbs in preaxial polydactyly were submitted to anatomic dissection to detect a triphalangeal thumb. Radiologically, two particular categories of thumbs with duplication at the metacarpophalangeal joint were seen. The surgically excised thumbs of either the radial or the ulnar member were preserved for dissection. Depending on the number of phalanges as well as on osteocartilaginous structures, the thumbs were classified into three groups. In the first group, the thumbs consisted of three phalanges but had absent joint formation between the phalanges and metacarpal. The se

A 16-year-old girl with a history of nontraumatic swelling of both forearms, osteochondromas of the knees, heterotopic ossification of the neck and back, severe malformations of all digits with hypoplastic or absent nails, alopecia partialis of the scalp, and moderate cognitive impairment was seen for diagnostic evaluation. Whole exome sequencing identified an activating mutation of ACVR1 (c.983G > A; p.Gly328Glu) which confirmed a suspected FOP variant. The delayed diagnosis of an FOP variant in this patient could have been avoided if the significance of severe digital malformations had been

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic bone is rarely found in the gastrointestinal tract. Here we report a rare case of metaplastic ossification within a benign ulcerating adenoma and review the literature concerning the aetiology.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman, who presented with a history of melaena, was found at colonoscopy to have a pedunculated ulcerating polyp. Histological examination demonstrated multiple areas of osseous metaplasia within the polyp stroma.
CONCLUSION: Heterotopic ossification in colonic adenomas is a particularly rare phenomenon, with the majority of cases occurring wi

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue that leads to progressive, disabling heterotopic ossification in characteristic anatomic patterns. It is accompanied by pathognomonic congenital malformation of the great toes (or thumbs) - microdactyly. There is a high occurrence of diagnostic errors in FOP, leading to inappropriate interventions that may result in significant harm to patients. Scintigraphic demonstration of heterotopic ossifications in connective tissue at characteristic locations, in combination with pathognomonic microda

Heterotopic ossification development within the interosseous membrane of the ankle is an uncommon occurrence after routine ankle sprains. We present a case of a high school football player who sustained a syndesmosis ankle sprain. After 4 weeks, he continued to have pain, swelling, and range of motion restriction despite being treated with cryotherapy, NSAIDs, supportive taping, and progressive rehabilitation. The radiographs revealed a heterotopic ossification within the interosseous membrane of the distal extremity. The patient was initially treated conservatively and went on to have surgica

Human embryos and fetuses were investigated histologically to elucidate the possible pathogenesis of congenital malformations of the vertebral body. Special attention was paid to early development of the vertebral column, particularly the often-questioned stage of resegmentation, important as the stage during which the malformations might develop. Evidence of resegmentation was found in 7 embryos ranging from 7 mm C-R length (5 weeks after fertilization) to 13 mm (6 weeks). Moreover, the formation of the definitive vertebral body was considered to be intimately related to the intersegmental ar

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical, radiographic, and complication outcomes of patients undergoing capsular repair or resection during total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the anterior approach.
METHODS: The present prospective cohort study included 232 patients submitted to THA at a tertiary hospital, who were divided according to exposure. One group of subjects underwent THA with capsular preservation and closure, and the other underwent THA with capsular resection (capsulectomy). Clinical assessment included the Harris Hip Score (HHS), evaluation of hip range of motion, and identification of

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO), acquired or hereditary, is a diverse pathological condition defined by the production of extraskeletal bone in muscles, soft tissues, and connective tissues. Acquired HO is relatively prevalent and develops mostly in response to trauma, although its etiology is unknown. Genetic forms provide insight into the pathobiological mechanisms of this disorder. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary form of HO that can have a significant impact on affected individuals. FOP steadily weakens affected subjects and increases their risk

Fibrodysplasia ossifcans progressive (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by congenital malformation of the great toes and by progressive heterotopic ossification of soft tissues. Although ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint occurs commonly in the late stages of the disease, only one well-documented case of submandibular heterotopic ossification in a patient who had FOP exists. Twelve (11 %) of our 107 patients who have FOP had submandibular heterotopic ossification that was mistaken initially in seven of the patients for mumps, angioneurotic edema, abscess, mononucleosis, or ne

Limb fracture combined with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common multiple injuries and patients often suffer from severe craniocerebral injury combined with long bone fracture of the limbs. The present study examined the expression of osteopontin (SPP1) in the tibial fracture callus and heterotopic ossification tissues in craniocerebral injury and investigated its relationship with miR-433. A total of 26 patients with tibial fracture combined with brain injury were included in the TBI group, and 26 patients with simple tibial fracture were included in the control group. The p

The development of heterotopic ossification around the elbow has been linked to trauma (particularly fractures or dislocations), closed head injury, spinal cord injury, burns of the extremity, genetic traits, adult respiratory distress syndrome, and orthotopic liver transplant. Pain and lack of motion are the most common complaints during the progression of ectopic bone about the joint. Opposite to common credence, fracture healing is not accelerated in patients with traumatic brain injury. Formation of heterotopic bone is not a clinically significant form of healing, therefore healing rates o
