Phylogeography of the trumpetfishes (Aulostomus): ring species complex on a global scale.

The distribution of circumtropical marine species is limited by continental boundaries, cold temperate conditions, and oceanic expanses, but some of these barriers are permeable over evolutionary time scales. Sister taxa that evolved in separate ocean basins can come back into contact, and the consequences of this renewed sympatry may be a key to understanding evolutionary processes in marine organisms. The circumtropical trumpetfishes (Aulostomus) include a West Atlantic species (A. maculatus), an Indian-Pacific species (A. chinensis), and an East Atlantic species (A. strigosus) that may be t

Proteomic characterization of Tityus championi venom and recombinant expression of its major neurotoxin.

BACKGROUND: Tityus championi is a species endemic to the southern Talamanca Mountain Range, along the border region between Costa Rica and Panama, and has been associated with severe clinical cases. Despite its medical relevance, the composition of its venom remains poorly studied. The present study aimed to characterize the proteomic composition of T. championi venom, identify its main toxin families, and recombinantly produce one of its most abundant and lethal toxins for potential use in antivenom development. METHODS: Venom composition was analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), ena

PvGTSeq and PvCRiSP: Two amplicon-based targeted sequencing panels for Plasmodium vivax.

Plasmodium vivax is the main cause of malaria outside of sub-Saharan Africa, and in many settings it presents significant challenges to malaria elimination efforts. Despite some control successes in the Americas, regional annual case counts of malaria have increased by over 25% between 2014 and 2023, largely driven by P. vivax. Genomic surveillance can play a key role in understanding the extent to which disease persistence represents indigenous transmission as opposed to introduction of new strains through migration, and whether specific variants evade control measures. Efforts to make P. viv

Religious Perceptions About COVID-19 Among Predominantly Young Online Respondents from Selected Latin American Countries.

This study aimed to determine the factors associated with religious perceptions about COVID-19 among predominantly young online respondents from selected Latin American countries. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study using data from a multicountry survey conducted during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America. Participants were adults aged 18 years or older recruited through an online, non-probability convenience sampling strategy. Religious perceptions about COVID-19 were assessed with a six-item Likert-type scale exploring beliefs about divine influence on the p

Hepatitis of Unknown Origin and Etiology (Acute Non HepA-E Hepatitis) among Children in 2021/2022: Review of the Current Findings.

Several clusters and individual cases of acute hepatitis have been reported in the US, Europe and recently in Asia and Central America since October 2021. A laboratory investigation of the common viral hepatitis agents (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV and HEV) yielded negative results prompting the use of the term "acute non HepA-E hepatitis" to describe this condition. The cases were characterized by the manifestations of acute hepatitis (abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice and very high levels of liver enzymes) affecting children with a median age of 3-4 years. The exact underlying etiology has

Zika Virus Infection of Pregnant Ifnar1-/- Mice Triggers Strain-Specific Differences in Fetal Outcomes.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus that causes a constellation of adverse fetal outcomes collectively termed congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). However, not all pregnancies exposed to ZIKV result in an infant with apparent defects. During the 2015 to 2016 American outbreak of ZIKV, CZS rates varied by geographic location. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this heterogeneity in outcomes have not been well defined. Therefore, we sought to characterize and compare the pathogenic potential of multiple Asian-/American-lineage ZIKV strains in an established Ifnar1-/- pregnant mouse model. Here,

Changing epidemiology of invasive non-typhoid Salmonella infection: a nationwide population-based registry study.

OBJECTIVES: Non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS) may invade beyond the intestine, causing bacteraemia, sepsis, and infection of normally sterile sites. The epidemiology of invasive NTS (iNTS) infection is under-researched. We determined trends, risk factors, serotype distribution, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and attributable sources of iNTS infection in a high-income setting. METHODS: 22,837 records of culture-confirmed human salmonellosis cases and 10,008 serotyped Salmonella isolates from five putative animal reservoirs (pigs, cattle, broilers, layers, reptiles) in the Netherlands during 2005-2

Two distinct Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) taxa are found in sympatry in Guatemala and Mexico.

Approximately 10 million people are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, which remains the most serious parasitic disease in the Americas. Most people are infected via triatomine vectors. Transmission has been largely halted in South America in areas with predominantly domestic vectors. However, one of the main Chagas vectors in Mesoamerica, Triatoma dimidiata, poses special challenges to control due to its diversity across its large geographic range (from Mexico into northern South America), and peridomestic and sylvatic populations that repopulate houses fo

Spatial variability in distribution and prevalence of Caribbean scleractinian coral and octocoral diseases. I. Community-level analysis.

Geographic assessments of coral diseases are needed to understand their local and geographic spatial-temporal variability. Coral and octocoral diseases and their prevalence were assessed along 4 permanent 10 x 2 m band-transects in each of 3 depth habitats (<4, 5-12 and >15 m) in each of 2 reefs in each of 6 countries across the wider Caribbean during the summer and fall of 2005. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to test variability of major diseases and community level disease prevalence in corals and octocorals among habitats, reefs and countries. The most common and

Re-emergence of Oropouche virus as a novel global threat.

Oropouche fever is a viral infectious disease caused by the Oropouche virus (OROV), primarily transmitted by the biting midge Culicoides paraensis. Historically considered endemic to the Amazon region, particularly in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, Oropouche fever has resulted in an estimated 500,000 recorded infections. However, its true burden has remained largely unknown for over seven decades, serving as a classic example of a neglected tropical disease. In 2024, however, OROV rapidly expanded beyond its traditional Amazonian hotspots, spreading across Brazil and into other parts of South and

Exploring the cobia (Rachycentron canadum) genome: unveiling putative male heterogametic regions and identification of sex-specific markers.

BACKGROUND: Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) is the only member of the Rachycentridae family and exhibits considerable sexual dimorphism in growth rate. Sex determination in teleosts has been a long-standing basic biological question, and the molecular mechanisms of sex determination/differentiation in cobia are completely unknown. RESULTS: Here, we reported 2 high-quality, chromosome-level annotated male and female cobia genomes with assembly sizes of 586.51 Mb (contig/scaffold N50: 86.0 kb/24.3 Mb) and 583.88 Mb (79.9 kb/22.5 Mb), respectively. Gestational weight gain charts for Latin American adolescents.

Monitoring gestational weight gain (GWG) throughout pregnancy among adolescents is important for detecting individuals at risk and timely intervention. However, there are no specific tools or guidelines for GWG monitoring of this group. We aimed to construct GWG charts for pregnant adolescents (10-19 years old) according to pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) using a pooled dataset from nine Latin American countries. Datasets from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay collected between 2003 and 2021 were combined after data cleaning and harmonization.

Serological evidence for potential yellow fever virus infection in non-human primates, southeastern Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Arthropod-borne flaviviruses like dengue virus (DENV) and yellow fever virus (YFV) are major human pathogens. In Latin America, YFV is maintained in sylvatic cycles involving non-human primates (NHP) and forest-dwelling mosquitos. YFV supposedly does not circulate north of Panama. METHODS: We conducted a serologic study for flaviviruses and other emerging viruses in NHP from southeastern Mexico. A total of thirty sera of black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi, n = 25), black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra, n = 3), and mantled howler monkeys (Al. palliata, n = 2) sampled in
