Frequency of urologic lesions was evaluated in 408 children from 6-15 years old in a suburban area of Bamako district in Mali, Missabougou; 65.2% from children were infected by Schistosoma haematobium, 13% by Schistosoma mansoni and 0.2% by Schistosoma intercalatum. Early diagnosis and treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infections is imperative to prevent chronic manifestations of the disease. Microscopical examination of urine and faeces, and rectal biopsy are widely used standard methods for the rapid diagnosis of schistosomiasis. One hundred and twenty-eight children aged 4 to 11 years old in Dhaka, Bangladesh were treated for infections with Trichuris trichiura and other intestinal parasites using a single dose of 400 mg of albendazole. Only one Trichuris infection was apparently cured although egg counts fell by about 50%. A larger single dosage is recommended to treat Trichuris. Eleven out of 46 infections with Giardia intestinalis were not detected after treatment (p less than 0.001).

Parasitological, clinical, and sonographic examinations were performed on 309 school children in a village endemic for schistosomiasis mansoni. Data from the 255 denying treatment within the previous 2 years were analysed separately. On a single Kato examination 42% were uninfected; the remainder had light (26%), moderate (21%), or heavy (11%) infections with Schistosoma mansoni. Three hundred and seven patients, 130 children and 207 adults, from a hyperendemic village, underwent an ultrasonography of bladder and kidneys. Prevalence of bladder lesions is 79.3% in children and 61.9% in adults, prevalence of hydronephrosis is 36.1% in children and 9.7% in adults. These study confirms the importance of urologic lesions from schistosomiasis in the irrigation schemes of the Niger river. There is no relationship between frequency and importance of lesions and urinary egg count.

The long-term infection with Schistosoma mansoni (Gezira strain--Sudan) was studied in the Nile rat (Arvicanthis niloticus) to investigate the 'self cure' phenomenon. The effects of three benzimidazole anthelmintics in dogs infected with a human strain of Strongyloides stercoralis were investigated. Cambendazole, but not thiabendazole or mebendazole, abrogated the subsequent development of a patent infection when administered at the same time as infection to immunocompetent dogs.
