Fear bradycardia and activation of the human periaqueductal grey.

Animal models of predator defense distinguish qualitatively different behavioral modes that are activated at increasing levels of predation threat. A defense mode observed at intermediate threat levels is freezing: a cessation of locomotion that is characterized by a parasympathetically dominated autonomic nervous system response that causes heart rate deceleration, or fear bradycardia. Studies in rodents have shown that freezing depends on amygdalar projections to the periaqueductal grey (PAG). In humans, freezing-like behaviors are implicated in development and maintenance of psychopathology

Airway Vagal Neuroplasticity Associated with Respiratory Viral Infections.

Respiratory virus infections leads to coughing, sneezing, and increases in reflex parasympathetic bronchoconstriction and secretions. These responses to viral infection are exclusively or largely secondary to changes in the function of the nervous system. For many with underlying airway pathologies such as asthma and COPD, this neuroplasticity can lead to disease exacerbations and hospitalization. Relatively little is understood about the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the changes in neuronal control of the respiratory tract during viral infection, but the evidence supports th

Maintained prolongation of AV conduction time by acetylcholine.

Although chronotropic responses to maintained cholinergic activation have been reported to fade during tonic vagal stimulation, discrepancy exists as to whether AV conduction behaves similarly. Since previous studies have examined only low grade AV block, we sought to more fully characterize the dromotropic responses to different degrees of maintained cholinergic activation. We used anesthetized mongrel dogs in which the nutrient artery supplying the AV node region was cannulated and perfused with either autologous blood or oxygenated Tyrode solution containing various concentrations of acetyl

Pharmacology of the internal anal sphincter and its relevance to faecal incontinence.

1 The internal anal sphincter (IAS) has a spontaneous tone and is the main contributor to the maintenance of faecal continence. The spontaneous resting tone exhibited by the sphincter can be modified by neurotransmitters from the autonomic and enteric nervous systems. 2 In this review, the influence of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems on IAS tone are discussed and the putative roles of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, vasoactive intestinal peptide and adenosine triphosphate in non-adrenergic non-cholinergic transmission are considered. 3 Faecal incontinence is a common conditi…

Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability is useful as a screening tool for detecting sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous dysfunctions in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor symptoms and autonomic dysfunction. However, autonomic function tests commonly performed in PD can only evaluate either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study is to investigate whether power spectral analysis of heart rate variability could detect both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous dysfunctions in patients with PD. METHODS: Seventeen patients with PD and 11 healthy control subjects underwent electrocardiogram recording for the spec…

Schwann Cells in Digestive System Disorders.

Proper functioning of the digestive system is ensured by coordinated action of the central and peripheral nervous systems (PNS). Peripheral innervation of the digestive system can be viewed as intrinsic and extrinsic. The intrinsic portion is mainly composed of the neurons and glia of the enteric nervous system (ENS), while the extrinsic part is formed by sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory branches of the PNS. Glial cells are a crucial component of digestive tract innervation, and a great deal of research evidence highlights the important status of ENS glia in health and disease. In thi

THE STUDY OUTCOMES OF THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF HEXACHLOROCYCLOHEXANE ON VEGETOVASCULAR REGULATION OF NEWBORNS' CARDIAC RHYTHM.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most adverse chemical factors of the outdoor environment is pesticides entering the organism of newborns via mother's breast milk, and also receive a pesticide load through a polluted environment. The heavy demonstration of pesticides impact on the brain is violation of autonomic regulation mechanisms of newborns' cardiac rhythm. The purpose of the study is early detection of violation of autonomic regulation mechanisms of cardiac function of children with perinatal hypoxia in the region of hexachlorocyclohexane use in cotton planting. Development of a model system for neuronal dysfunction in Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is a glycosphingolipid storage disorder that is caused by a genetic deficiency of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (AGA, EC 3.2.1.22). It is a multisystem disease that affects the vascular, cardiac, renal, and nervous systems. One of the hallmarks of this disorder is neuropathic pain and sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous dysfunction. The exact mechanism by which changes in AGA activity result in change in neuronal function is not clear, partly due to of a lack of relevant model systems. In this study, we report the development of an in vitro model system to study neuronal d

Tracking the glossopharyngeal nerve pathway through anatomical references in cross-sectional imaging techniques: a pictorial review.

UNLABELLED: The glossopharyngeal nerve (GPN) is a rarely considered cranial nerve in imaging interpretation, mainly because clinical signs may remain unnoticed, but also due to its complex anatomy and inconspicuousness in conventional cross-sectional imaging. In this pictorial review, we aim to conduct a comprehensive review of the GPN anatomy from its origin in the central nervous system to peripheral target organs. Because the nerve cannot be visualised with conventional imaging examinations for most of its course, we will focus on the most relevant anatomical references along the entire GPN

When do the symptoms of autonomic nervous system malfunction appear in patients with Parkinson's disease?

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dysautonomia appears in almost all patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in a certain stage of their condition. The aim of … stem malfunction was defined by Ewing diagnostic criteria. The tests, indicators of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, were significantly different in the PD patients as compared with the controls, suggesting the failure of both systems. However, it was shown, in the selected groups of patients, that the malfunction of both systems was present in two treated group …

Migraine with visual aura, unilateral mydriasis and Takotsubo Syndrome. Random coincidence or common pathogenesis? The precarious balance of the autonomic nervous system and the complex relationship between brain and heart: a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: The recent examination of a woman who presented a migraine attack with visual aura and unilateral mydriasis, followed, a few days later, by an episode of Takotsubo Syndrome, prompted us to review the existing literature correlating migraine and TS as well as the most recent studies regarding the association between Takotsubo Syndrome and neurological dysfunction. Our aim is to define the role of dysautonomia and the contribution of the Autonomic Nervous System in the pathogenesis of both diseases, also, to define the functional role of the hypothalamus in the both the determination

Diurnal and nocturnal cardiovascular variability and heart rate arousal response in idiopathic hypersomnia.

OBJECTIVES: Autonomic nervous system dysfunction has been described in narcolepsy with cataplexy affecting sympathetic functions. In this study we analyzed whether altered diurnal and nocturnal cardiovascular control is present in idiopathic hypersomnia (IH). METHODS: Fourteen drug-free patients aged 26.2 ± 7 years and 14 age-matched controls were examined. Clinical data, 24-h polysomnography, heart rate (HR) variability, and the HR response to spontaneous arousal were available. RESULTS: Sleep macrostructure was comparable between controls and patients, with the latter having significantly

Toward Tailored Interventions: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Functioning Predicts Responses to an Intervention for Conduct Problems Delivered in Two Formats.

Coping Power is an evidence-based preventive intervention for youth with aggressive behavior problems that has traditionally been delivered in small group formats, but because of concerns about potentially diminished effects secondary to aggregation of high-risk youth, an individual format of Coping Power has been developed. The current study examined whether physiological characteristics of the child may provide information about which intervention delivery format works best for that individual. Indicators of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system functioning were examined in 360 four…

Replication and Expansion of Pupillary Light Reflex as Diagnostic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Tool in Military Cadets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pupillometers can quantitate an individual's pupillary light reflex (PLR), which involves a complex interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Growing evidence suggests that mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) impairs the regulatory processes that balance sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system responses; therefore, the PLR may serve as a diagnostic mTBI biomarker. Preliminary evidence in this area would be enhanced by replication. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six US Military Academy cadets completed standard concussion assessm…

Brain-first versus body-first Parkinson's disease: Differential findings on pupillary, brainstem and vagus sonography.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease (PD), two pathogenetic subtypes have been proposed: a 'brain-first', with α-synuclein pathology arising in one hemisphere and spreading secondarily to the peripheral autonomic nervous system, and a 'body-first' subtype, with the pathology originating in the enteric or peripheral autonomic nervous system and subsequently spreading symmetrically to the brain. To dissect these subtypes, we assessed the association between pupillary dysfunction, mesencephalic raphe and substantia nigra changes, vagus nerve atrophy and vagal electrocardiographic parameters in PD p

The role of the sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system on pain before and after third molar extraction- an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing heart rate variability (HRV) before a standardized surgery would help to explore further the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and pain. METHODS: A single-center prospective cohort of 117 patients (55% female) scheduled for third molar extraction underwent a preoperative resting measurement of arterial pressure followed by an HRV recording, then potentiated by a Valsalva maneuver and a deep breathing challenge. Finally, pain sensitivity was assessed by hand immersion in hot water. All surgeries were conducted under local anesthesia, with or without sedati
