OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy and safety of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) versus core needle biopsy (CNB) for parotid masses.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Tertiary academic medical center, 2018 to 2023.
METHODS: We reviewed 485 patients undergoing ultrasound-guided parotid biopsy (426 FNAs and 59 CNBs). Permanent histopathology served as the reference standard. Primary outcomes included diagnostic performance metrics for neoplasm, malignancy, and tissue-specific diagnosis. Secondary outcomes included nondiagnostic rates, complications,

Breast cancer rarely metastasizes to the parotid gland. Early recognition in patients with a history of malignancy is critical for timely diagnosis and treatment. We report the case of a 60-year-old female who presented with a two-month history of a left periauricular mass, 18 months after completing treatment for breast carcinoma. Despite the patient's oncologic history, initial evaluation by our maxillofacial surgery service showed no evidence of distant metastasis, and we initially ruled out metastatic disease. Clinical evaluation, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT), fine-needle asp

This study aims to analyse a single-centre cohort series of patients who underwent parotidectomy for primary malignant parotid tumours. A retrospective chart review of 64 consecutive patients treated from November 2010 to March 2022 was performed. Outcomes were analysed by Kaplan-Meier curves. Sixty-four patients with a primary parotid malignancy were included in the study, with one bilateral case in this cohort. Patients were classified as stage I-II in 39 cases and stage III-IV in 26 cases. The five-year overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), local relapse-free survival (LRF

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland carcinomas (SGC) cover a heterogeneous group of malignancies with a lack of data of high-level evidence.
METHODS: Clinical data of 127 patients treated for SGC at a university cancer center between 2002 and 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. The association of clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, adverse events, and outcome was assessed.
RESULTS: Patients received surgery (n = 65), surgery followed by (chemo-)radiotherapy (n = 56), or primary (chemo-)radiotherapy (n = 6). Injury to the cranial nerves or their branches was the most frequent su

Benign lymphoepithelial tumors of salivary glands had been restricted to sebaceous and non-sebaceous (NSLA) lymphadenomas. However, salivary neoplasms recapitulating carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) have been the subject of recent case reports. We reviewed clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings in 20 salivary gland tumors with thymus-like phenotype (18 histologically benign and two with malignant component). Original diagnoses were NSLA (n = 11) and unclassified thymus-like lymphoepithelial neoplasms (n = 9). Patients were 13 males and 7 females aged 28

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)/undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is an uncommon malignancy in the head-and-neck region. UPS is a malignant neoplasm of uncertain origin that arises both in soft tissue and bone. We bring forth a 65-year-old female who presented with an ulceroproliferative growth in the right upper neck. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a large exophytic, solid-cystic growth in the right parotid region with locoregional extension and few ipsilateral lymph nodes. Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm of the antigen presenting cells of the immune system. The majority occur in lymph nodes but around 30% can occur extranodally including in the spleen, lungs, head and neck and liver. We present an unusual case of an FDCS of the parotid gland in a 51-year-old woman with a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma treated with combination chemotherapy and modified mantle radiotherapy. Only four cases of an intraparotid FDCS have been previously reported. The patient underwent a superficial parotidectomy and level 2/3 neck dissection. A diagnosis of

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon neoplasm that most commonly occurs in major salivary glands, mainly the parotid gland. SDC is rarely found in the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. This report presents an extremely rare case of sarcomatoid SDC originating in a minor salivary gland of the palate. The tumor was histologically characterized by the presence of both carcinomatous and sarcomatoid components. The patient presented with a painless mass in the right palate, which slowly increased in size over 20 years. The clinical course of the present case suggests that the tumor

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) occurs more commonly in the minor salivary glands of the palate on than the tongue. ACC is a malignant neoplasm that accounts for 1-2% of all head and neck malignancies and 10-15% of all salivary gland malignancies. ACC affects the exocrine glands at any site, but the parotid gland is the most common site in the head and neck region. Many factors should be taken into account in the prognosis of ACC, including the histological and clinical stages of the disease. The most striking feature of ACC is that it is locally aggressive, with a high recurrence level, perine

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare locally aggressive malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. The tumor is composed almost exclusively of tumor cells with myoepithelial differentiation and characterized by infiltrative growth and potential for distant metastasis. Tumor cells often display morphologic heterogeneity with a wide range of cytomorphologic features, such as epithelioid, plasmacytoid, spindle, and clear cell types, making its recognition challenging. Only limited reports on its metastatic behavior are available in the literature. We describe a case of metastatic myoepithelial carci

A case is reported of neurotropic melanoma developed from a superficial spreading melanoma with minimal cytological deviation, situated in the right temple. The nine-year course was clinically characterised by local recurrences, involvement of the orbit and the parotid region via neurogenic invasion, and systemic metastases to lung, seventh rib, and the brain. The histopathology was characterised by fascicles of dysplastic spindle cells, neuroid arrangement in loose fibrillary matrix, and peri- and intraneural permeation of the nerve trunks. Despite minimal atypism the neoplasm metastasised an

Diffuse infiltrative lymphocytic syndrome is a clinical identity that can be part of the spectrum of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection. It is characterized by sicca symptoms, parotid and lachrymal enlargement and extra-articular manifestations. We report the case of a 60 years old woman with clinical sicca syndrome in association with leukopenia, positive anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. In the follow up the patient developed a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue pulmonary neoplasm. Furthermore, the clinical surveys revealed human immunodeficiency virus (HI

PURPOSE: Parotidectomy may be burdened by numerous complications that may worsen subjects' quality of life (QoL). These include paresis or paralysis of the facial nerve, face profile asymmetry, keloids, salivary fistula, Frey Syndrome (FS), First Bite Syndrome (FBS), and hypo-anaesthesia of the skin. This study is an effort to assess the incidence of complications following parotidectomy and their impact on subjects' QoL.
METHODS: Subjects undergoing parotidectomy for benign neoplasms from 2012 to 2015 were selected and invited to attend our outpatient clinic. After a brief anamnesis, the med

This paper reviews the examination technique, normal findings, and pathological findings in conventional radiographic diagnosis of the salivary glands. The clinical importance of plain radiographs and sialography today despite the availability of modern imaging modalities is discussed. Of the ultrasound equipment is adequate and the examiner has enough experience in small-parts ultrasonography, application of conventional X-ray methods should be limited to confirmation of ultrasonographic suspicion of sialolithiasis or tumor-erosion of adjacent bone, especially the mandible (plain films), furt

Salivary gland tumors represent 3-10% of all head and neck neoplasms. Most of the tumours are benign with parotid gland being most commonly affected. Surgical intervention in the form of parotidectomy forms the mainstay of treatment. Among the various postoperative complications that may occur after parotidectomy, facial nerve weakness is the most dreaded one for both the surgeon as well as the patient. In the literature, the incidence of transient facial weakness after parotid surgery ranges from 10 to 68%, and long-term dysfunction ranges from 0 to 19%. Apart from injury mechanisms such as n

BACKGROUND: Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) was first described in 2010 by Skálová et al. This entity shares morphologic and immunohistochemical features with the secretory carcinoma (SC) of the breast. MASC usually presents as an asymptomatic mass in the parotid gland and predominantly affects men. This tumor is considered a low-grade carcinoma but has the potential for high-grade transformation. We report one MASC case and a review of world literature.
CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old male patient presented because he noticed a mass of approximately 3×3cm on the right pre-auricular regi
