Vitamin D ameliorates particulate matter induced mitochondrial damages and calcium dyshomeostasis in BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria is prone to oxidative damage by endogenous and exogenous sources of free radicals, including particulate matter (PM). Given the role of mitochondria in inflammatory disorders, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we hypothesized that supplementation of vitamin D may play a protective role in PM-induced mitochondrial oxidative damages of human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. METHODS: BEAS-2B cells were pretreated with 1,25(OH)2D3, an active form of vitamin D, for 1 h prior to 24-hour exposure to PM (SRM-1648a). Oxidative stress was measured by …

Exploring the long-term performance of air purifiers in removing particulate matter and formaldehyde across different residential environments.

Household air purifiers are widely used to enhance indoor air quality. However, limited information exists regarding the factors that influe … non-oily fume environments surpassed that in oily fume environments. After 12 months of operation, particulate matter (PM) concentrations rose by 92.7% and 76.5% in oily and non-oily fume environments, respectively. This increase was primarily attributed to the loss of electrostatic attraction in the polypropylene material due to the organic matter in oily particul …

Curcumin Ameliorates Particulate Matter-Induced Pulmonary Injury through Bimodal Regulation of Macrophage Inflammation via NF-κB and Nrf2.

The direct effects of particulate matter (PM) on lung injury and its specific molecular mechanisms are unclear. However, experimental evidence has shown that oxidative stress-mediated inflammation in macrophages is the main pathological outcome of PM exposure. Curcumin has been reported to protect organs against the disturbance of homeostasis caused by various toxic agents through anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. However, the protective action of curcumin against PM-induced pulmonary inflammation and the underlying mechanism have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we …

Perturbation of arachidonic acid and glycerolipid metabolism promoted particulate matter-induced inflammatory responses in human bronchial epithelial cells.

Particulate matter (PM) has become the main risk factor for public health, being linked with an increased risk of respiratory diseases. However, the potential mechanisms underlying PM-induced lung injury have not been well elucidated. In this study, we systematically integrated the metabolomics, lipidomics, and transcriptomics data obtained from the human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) exposed to PM to reveal metabolic disorders in PM-induced lung injury. We identified 170 differentially expressed metabolites (82 upregulated and 88 downregulated metabolites), 218 differentially expressed l…

Constructing Janus Microsphere Membranes for Particulate Matter Filtration, Directional Water Vapor Transfer, and High-Efficiency Broad-Spectrum Sterilization.

Commercial masks have significant drawbacks, including low water vapor transmission efficiency and limited ability to inhibit harmful microorganisms, whereas in this contribution, a series of Janus microsphere membranes are developed with hierarchical structures by quenching and crystallizing 12-hydroxystearic acid and halicin layer-by-layer on a polypropylene non-woven fabric, laminating them with hydrophilic cotton fibers in a one-pot process, and further demonstrate the potential of this composite system as masks. Through further optimization, excellent superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic pro

Hawthorn total flavonoids ameliorate ambient fine particulate matter-induced insulin resistance and metabolic abnormalities of lipids in mice.

Recent studies have shown a strong correlation between ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and diabetes risk, including abnormal lipid accumulation and systemic insulin resistance (IR). Hawthorn total flavonoids (HF) are the main groups of active substances in Hawthorn, which showed anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-hyperglycemic effects. Therefore, we hypothesized that HF may attenuate PM2.5-induced IR and abnormal lipid accumulation. Female C57BL/6 N mice were randomly assigned to the filtered air exposure (FA) group, concentrated PM2.5 exposure (PM) group, PM2.5 exposure maintained …

Particulate matter promotes hyperpigmentation via AhR/MAPK signaling activation and by increasing α-MSH paracrine levels in keratinocytes.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter of 2.5 μm or less in ambient air (PM2.5) has become a global public and environmental problem, and the control of the PM2.5 concentration in air is an urgent problem. PM2.5 can easily penetrate the skin, activating the inflammatory response in skin, unbalancing the skin barrier function, and inducing skin aging. Hyperpigmentation is the main manifestation of skin aging and has a considerable impact on quality of life worldwide. To date, no research on the influence of PM2.5 on hyperpigmentation has been conducted. Here, we illustrate t…

Inhalation of particulate matter containing free radicals leads to decreased vascular responsiveness associated with an altered pulmonary function.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Although the goal of thermal remediation is to eliminate organic wastes through combustion, when incomplete combustion occurs, organics chemisorb to transition metals to generate PM-containing environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). Similar EPFR species have been detected in PM found in diesel and gasoline exhaust, woodsmoke, and urban air. Prior in vivo studies demonstrated that EPFRs reduce cardiac function secondary to elevations in pulmonary arterial pressures. In vitro studies show…

Exposure of trophoblast cells to fine particulate matter air pollution leads to growth inhibition, inflammation and ER stress.

Ambient air pollution is considered a major environmental health threat to pregnant women. Our previous work has shown an association between exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) and an increased risk of developing pre-eclamspia. It is now recognized that many pregnancy complications are due to underlying placental dysfunction, and this tissue plays a pivotal role in pre-eclamspia. Recent studies have shown that PM can enter the circulation and reach the human placenta but the effects of PM on human placental function are still largely unknown. In this work we investigated the effects …
