Hepatopancreatic parvovirus (HPV) causes disease in several species of penaeid shrimp. Heavy infections may result in poor growth and reduced production for shrimp farmers. From one southern Thai shrimp pond with a high prevalence of HPV infection, 790 shrimp were sampled randomly and the hepatopancreas (HP) removed. Most HP were preserved in liquid nitrogen. However, every 10th HP (79 total) was divided into 2 parts appropriately fixed for examination by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and light microscopy. Based on light microscopy, the prevalence of HPV infection in the pond was appr…

Sera from 308 healthy Greek females of reproductive age were examined for specific IgG antibodies to human parvovirus B19 by recombinant-Elisa to determine the immunity rates of this part of population to parvovirus B19. Also paired maternal sera and amniotic fluids from nine pregnancies with hydrops fetalis were investigated for specific IgG and IgM antibodies and parvovirus DNA by polymerase chain reaction and southern hybridization analysis. The latter study was conducted to find out the participation of parvovirus B19 infection in hydrops fetalis cases in Greece. The overall prevalence of …

We describe the case of a 34-year-old man with AIDS who developed severe anemia due to chronic pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) caused by parvovirus B19. Following initial treatment with an infusion of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), 1 g/kg, PRCA resolved, but there was a recurrence of severe anemia in 3 months. Retreatment with 2 g/kg IVIg over 2 days resulted in normalization of hemoglobin and a significantly longer remission duration. Two doses of 0.4 g/kg IVIg q 4 wk failed to prevent a relapse of PRCA in our patient. The dose and schedule of IVIg in the treatment of PRCA caused by parvovir…

A parvovirus B19 infection was established in a 58-year-old woman undergoing treatment for malignant lymphoma. Clinically, the patient displayed a variety of neurologic symptoms that could not readily be explained by the mere presence of lymphoblastic cells within the central nervous system. This is the first time parvovirus B19 DNA has been detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient suffering from encephalitis.

We describe three patients who had infection with human parvovirus B19 in association with new-onset systemic necrotising vasculitis syndromes, two with features of polyarteritis nodosa and one with features of Wegener's granulomatosis. Chronic B19 infection, lasting 5 months to more than 3 years, was shown by enzyme immunoassay for IgG and IgM antibodies to B19 and polymerase chain reaction for B19 DNA in serum and tissue samples. The patients had atypical serological responses to the B19 infection, although none had a recognisable immunodeficiency disorder. Treatment with corticosteroids and…

In the spring and summer of 1988, two separate outbreaks of an illness with a rash resembling erythema infectiosum occurred among members of the nursing staff of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The sources were two adolescent patients with sickle cell disease and aplastic crisis who had unsuspected parvovirus infection. Tests for IgM and IgG antibodies to parvovirus B19 were positive in both patients, and electron microscopical examination showed parvovirus-like particles in the early serum samples. Of 40 health care workers exposed to infected patients, 12 (30 percent) were infected,…

A hydropic premature infant with intrauterine growth retardation died at 4 days of age and was found at necropsy to have advanced liver disease. Clinical and serologic findings in mother and infant were consistent with recent parvovirus B19 infection. Parvovirus can cause fetal liver disease in animals, and some instances of congenital hepatic dysfunction in man may be due to intrauterine parvovirus B19 infection.

Recent study has shown that the human parvovirus (HPV) is a causative agent of aplastic crisis in hemolytic anemias. In subjects without shortened red blood cell life span, HPV is not associated with symptomatic anemia. A case of iron deficiency anemia revealed by HPV linked to erythroblastopenia is described in a child. On admission, the serum iron was not decreased and other blood chemistry tests were also not consistent with the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia. Abrupt cessation of erythropoiesis induced by HPV infection appeared to prolong plasma iron clearance, which elevated serum iro…

A 7- to 95-map unit segment of DNA from Aleutian disease of mink parvovirus (ADV) was subcloned into a bacteriophage SP6 based transcription vector and used to produce radiolabeled viral RNA transcripts corresponding to either 'plus' or 'minus' sense. The radiolabeled transcripts were reacted against Southern blots of whole cell DNA from ADV infected cell cultures as hybridization probes. The 'plus' sense RNA probe hybridized both to duplex replicative forms (RFs) as well as to single-stranded virion DNA (SS DNA), which is 'minus' in sense. In contrast, the 'minus' sense RNA probe reacted pref…

Since 1952, 112 children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) in Jamaica have had an aplastic crisis. Outbreaks occurred in 1956, 1960, 1065-67, 1971-73, and 1979-80. Most cases occurred in children under 10 years of age, and an aplastic crisis in a patient over the age of 15 years is rare. There were 38 cases in 1979-80 and stored serum specimens from 28 of these were available for virus studies. Evidence for infection with a parvovirus-like agent was found in 24 of these 28 cases. Viral antigen was detected in 2 patients, both of whom demonstrated seroconversion. Seroconversion during 1980 was det…

Porcine parvoviruses (PPVs) are small, non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA viruses that infect pigs. Recently, a novel porcine parvovirus 8 (PPV8) was identified in China and subsequently detected in several countries, suggesting its global distribution. This study aimed to investigate the presence and molecular characteristics of PPV8 in Korea using diagnostic submission samples originally collected for screening of major porcine viral diseases. From October to December 2023, a total of 723 pooled samples, derived from 3,175 individual serum, nasal swab, and oral fluid samples from 40 pig farm…

OBJECTIVES: Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a common infection that can cause complications in pregnancy. Outbreaks of B19V in Europe and the UK were recorded in 2024. We aimed to describe the epidemiology of maternal parvovirus in Wales and to investigate associated fetal outcomes widely and in 2024 specifically.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective observational study.
METHODS: All cases of maternal B19V reported to the Congenital Anomaly Register Information Service (CARIS) were analysed. Maternal risk factors included gestational age at the time of infection and maternal age. Spatio-temporal analysis …

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are vulnerable to acute hematologic complications due to chronic hemolysis and dependence on increased erythropoiesis. Parvovirus B19 infection can suppress erythroid progenitor cells, precipitating a transient aplastic crisis characterized by severe anemia and reticulocytopenia. Early recognition is critical to distinguish this condition from other causes of acute anemia in patients with SCD. A 22-year-old man with hemoglobin SS SCD and prior splenectomy presented with a three-day history of severe headache, non-bloody emesis, fevers, fatigue, and gener…

Human Parvovirus B19 (hB19V) is a widespread virus, causing erythema infectiosum in children and several clinical manifestations from acute to persistent infections in adults. In early 2024, ECDC reported an increased human Parvovirus B19 circulation in 14 European countries. A hB19V outbreak was also reported in Tuscany, Italy, prompting a detailed investigation of its genetic characteristics. In this context, through strict monitoring of circulating strains via next-generation sequencing (NGS), we carried out a phylogenetic analysis based on the whole of hB19V genomes. Phylogenetic clusterin…

The recent increase in parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections across Europe has underscored the need for enhanced surveillance. In Italy, B19V surveillance is not mandated nationally. This ambispective (retrospective and prospective) study aimed to assess the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the 2024 apparent surge in the Veneto Region by implementing mandatory disease notification starting in May 2024 and collecting clinical data on confirmed cases. During the surveillance period, 3156 B19V cases were reported, with 2.9% (93/3156) requiring hospitalisation (95% CI 2.4-3.5%). Children…

Since the beginning of 2024, several countries in Europe have faced an increase in the detection of Parvovirus B19 (B19V). The present study aimed to investigate the B19V outbreak in Belgium, focusing on molecular features and transmission dynamics among pregnant women. A total of 86 biological samples collected all over the country during the period between January and October 2024 were tested for B19V, and positive ones (n = 35) were used for molecular sequence investigations. An abnormal resurgence of B19V infections was first documented in February, and a significant decline was observed i…

In 2024, Europe experienced a significant upsurge in cases of Parvovirus B19 (B19V), the etiological agent of erythema infectiosum, also known as fifth disease. The prevalence of B19V in pregnant women, a particularly vulnerable population, holds critical clinical significance. Typically, B19V follows a well-documented seasonal pattern, with annual epidemics peaking in the spring and larger outbreaks occurring approximately every four years. B19V exhibits a tropism for erythroid precursor cells, potentially resulting in fetal anemia and, in the most severe scenarios, intrauterine demise. Sever…
