Growing turkeys were partly protected against fowl cholera 4 days after vaccination with the live Clemson University (CU) strain of Pasteurella multocida administered in drinking water, and they were highly protected from 1 to 4 weeks after vaccination. The commercially available lyophilized vaccine and the freshly cultured vaccine of the CU strain did not differ in the level of immunity induced. Immunity was relatively high in turkeys vaccinated with 1:2 and 1:4 dilutions of the recommended dosage (4 X 10(8) P. multocida) but was significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in turkeys vaccinated wi…

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, an economically important disease of commercial and backyard poultry. Turkeys are particularly susceptible to fowl cholera; both backyard and commercial turkeys can succumb to disease. On April 10, 2018, a dead 9-mo-old male Bronze turkey was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS)-Turlock branch for postmortem examination. History included previous housing and fighting with another male turkey, after which separation by a fence was instituted. Fighting continued, and depression and anorex…

A vaccine containing inactivated cultures of Bordetella bronchiseptica, toxigenic Pasteurella multocida type D and dermonecrotic P multocida type D toxoid in an oil-in-water adjuvant was given to seven sows, with seven others acting as controls. Half the piglets in each litter were exposed intranasally when four days old to B bronchiseptica and when eight days old to toxigenic P multocida type D. There was considerably less sneezing in the litters of the vaccinated sows and when the piglets were 10 weeks old, only 18 per cent had deformed snouts compared with 74 per cent in the litters of the …

Despite critical implications for disease dynamics and surveillance in wild long-lived species, the immune response after exposure to potentially highly pathogenic bacterial disease agents is still poorly known. Among infectious diseases threatening wild populations, avian cholera, caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, is a major concern. It frequently causes massive mortality events in wild populations, notably affecting nestlings of Indian yellow-nosed albatrosses (Thalassarche carteri) in the Indian Ocean. If adults are able to mount a long-term immune response, this could have imp…

This study aimed to investigate the concurrent infection of Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) type B:2, which causes Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS), with cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in cattle in Bangladesh between March and December 2023. Samples were collected from 11 distinct outbreak areas, totaling 102 samples. These included 54 FMD samples (saliva, tissue epithelium, and morbid tissues such as lung, spleen, and heart) and 54 HS samples (nasal swabs and morbid tissues) from 50 cattle of various ages and sexes, all showing clinical signs of suspected concurrent HS and FM…

Tetracyclines and beta-lactam antibiotics are usually recommended for the treatment of pasteurellosis following bite wounds. However other oral antimicrobial agents could be proposed. In vitro susceptibility of 94 Pasteurella strains [P. multocida (79), P. stomatis (11), P. dagmatis (2), P. canis (1), P. "SP" (1)], 20 group EF-4 strains and 28 Neisseria weaveri strains (formerly group M-5), that are bacteria often isolated after animal-inflicted wounds, was studied towards five antibiotics: clarithromycin, azithromycin, pristinamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin. AIMS: This work aimed to screen the antimicrobial activity of aqueous methanolic extracts of 13 mushroom species, collected in Bragança, against several clinical isolates obtained in Hospital Center of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). MIC results showed that Russula delica and Fistulina hepatica extracts inhibited the growth of gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Morganella morganni and Pasteurella multocida) and gram-positive (Staph…

Cutaneous bacterial disease continues to account for a significant proportion of clinical visits. The continuing emergence of strains that are resistant to available antibacterial agents creates a challenge for dermatologists, who need to keep abreast of current treatment strategies. In this article, antibacterial regimens are presented for skin infections caused by organisms such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Neisseria, Haemophilus ducreyi, Treponema pallidum, Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Pasteurella multocida, Vibrio vulnificus, Actinomyces, and Nocardia.

Fowl cholera, caused by Pasteurella multocida, remains a major problem of poultry worldwide. In the current report, we describe an outbreak in free range organic broilers. In addition to culturing samples from dead broilers, we attempted to isolate P. multocida from feral cats trapped on the farm. The isolates were identified by PCR as P. multocida and then serotyped using the Heddleston scheme and genotyped using both a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method and an enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR method. A total of 123 isolates of P. multocida were recovered from …

The present study was conducted to study the protective effect of ethanolic extract of propolis given subcutaneously (S/C) either alone or in combination with inactivated formalized Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) vaccine in rabbits challenged with virulent P. multocida strain. Twenty-eight New-Zealand rabbits, 6-8 weeks old and not vaccinated against pasteurellosis, were randomly divided into four equal groups. Group (1) was kept as nonvaccinated control. Group (2) was injected S/C with propolis. Group (3) was vaccinated (S/C) with P. multocida vaccine only. Group (4) was injected with v…

Sudden death is usually the main finding in field animals during haemorrhagic septicaemia outbreaks caused by Pasteurella multocida type B:2 that causes acute, fatal and septicaemic disease in cattle and buffaloes. This situation may be due to failure in early detection of the disease where early treatment of antibiotics may improve the prognosis of the animal and other surviving animals. Thus, there is a grey area on the knowledge on the potential usage of pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins as early biomarkers in the diagnosis of haemorrhagic septicaemia. In addition, explora…

Pasteurella multocida often causes zoonotic infections, ranging from mild, localized cellulitis to severe sepsis, and can be life-threatening in immunocompromised patients. However, diagnosis can be challenging due to its varied and nonspecific symptoms. We report a case of P. multocida bacteremia and otitis media with effusion in a 49-year-old female breast cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy without neutropenia. The patient presented with a sore throat, which was followed by headache, ear fullness, and fever. She was initially diagnosed with a viral infection and sent home. Two days later…

The control of respiratory infections is integral to a healthy livestock farm. The current study was conducted to optimize a multiplex PCR assay for simultaneous detection of Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) in nasal samples of cattle having suspicion of respiratory tract infections. The nasal samples were collected from 10 dairy farms affected with respiratory disease outbreaks in the recent past. These outbreaks were associated with respiratory tract infections caused by bacterial pathogens P. multocida, S. aureus and …

A water-in-oil emulsion adjuvanted combination shipping fever bacterin containing Pasteurella multocida, P hemolytica, Salmonella typhimurium and certain other species was effective in field use as a prophylactic agent against shipping fever pasteurellosis and salmonellosis. In trials using ranch calves it produced a greater antibody response than a comparable aluminum hydroxide adjuvanted bacterin. In critical 30-hour postvaccination challenge mouse tests it was superior to the conventional type bacterin and induced rapid and remarkable protection.

This case report presents an interesting and rare cause of meningitis in young infants, Pasteurella multocida. Not only is the organism unusual but the well appearance of the infant made this diagnosis surprising. The 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) clinical practice guidelines on well-appearing febrile infants brought a national guideline on the evaluation and management of fever in infants. However, providers should be aware that there is room for shared decision-making and that the guideline will miss a very small percentage of well-appearing infants with invasive bacterial infect…
