Visual function and pattern visual evoked response in optic neuritis.

The disparity between clinical visual function and pattern visual evoked response (VER) was studied in 53 patients who had suffered an attack of optic neuritis (ON) more than six months before. The visual functions tested included Snellen visual acuity, colour vision, visual field, and contrast sensitivity. The effect of pattern presentation, check size, and luminance was tested by recording VERs with several stimulus configurations. VER amplitudes were found to be associated with the outcome of all four clinical tests, independently of check size, luminance, or the presentation method used. O

Perceptual similarity and clustering in braille letter recognition.

Braille is a tactile writing system that enables individuals to read through the sense of touch. Although letter recognition research in the visual modality has informed reading instruction debates, the processes underlying braille letter recognition have received comparatively less attention which has led to little input from researchers toward educators. In this study, we first quantified the formal properties of braille dots using measures of cue validity and entropy-based informativeness, and we tested whether the 26 letters of the braille alphabet were linearly separable in the six-dimens

Object recognition ability predicts episodic location memory, enhanced by meaningfulness.

People differ in their ability to distinguish visually similar items, a domain-general ability known as o Richler (Psychological Review 126:226-251, 2019). While o typically involves extracting invariant object properties, we investigated whether it also relates to long-term memory for episodic information extrinsic to object identity, specifically, object location. We further examined whether this relationship is influenced by stimulus meaningfulness, a factor known to enhance long-term memory, by using both high- and low-meaning stimuli. Participants completed a location memory test, a serie

Decoding the Neural Stages from Action and Object Recognition to Mentalizing.

Higher-level action interpretation, such as inferring underlying intentions and predicting future actions, requires the integration of conceptual action information (e.g., "opening") with semantic knowledge about persons and objects (e.g., "my friend Anna," "pizza box"). However, how the neural systems for action and object recognition and memory interact with each other to form the basis for inferring higher-level mental states remains unclear. Here we use fMRI-based crossmodal multiple regression representational similarity analysis in human female and male participants to elucidate the proc

Investigating the role of the fusiform face area and occipital face area using multifocal transcranial direct current stimulation.

The functional role of the occipital face area (OFA) and the fusiform face area (FFA) in face recognition is inconclusive to date. While some research has shown that the OFA and FFA are involved in early (i.e., featural processing) and late (i.e., holistic processing) stages of face recognition respectively, other research suggests that both regions are involved in both early and late stages of face recognition. Thus, the current study aims to further examine the role of the OFA and the FFA using multifocal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). In Experiment 1, we used computer-gener

Damasio's error - Prosopagnosia with intact within-category object recognition.

The sudden inability to recognize individual faces following brain damage was first reported in a scientific journal 150 years ago and termed 'prosopagnosia' 70 years ago. While the term originally identified a face-selective neurological condition, it is now obscured by a sequence of imprecisions. First, prosopagnosia is routinely used to define symptoms of individual face recognition (IFR) difficulties in the context of visual object agnosia or other neurological conditions, or even in the normal population. Second, this over-expansive definition has lent support to a long-standing within-ca

Associations between feelings of social anxiety and emotion perception.

BACKGROUND: Abnormally biased perceptual judgment is a feature of many psychiatric disorders. Thus, individuals with social anxiety disorder are biased to recall or interpret social events negatively. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses such bias by teaching patients, via verbal instruction, to become aware of and change pathological misjudgment. The present study examined whether targeting verbal instruction to specific decision parameters that influence perceptual judgment may affect changes in anger perception. METHOD: We used a signal detection framework to decompose anger perception i

When transparency is opaque: Effects of diacritic marks and vowel letters on dyslexic Hebrew readers.

The current study examined the effects of orthographic transparency and familiarity on brain mechanisms involved in word recognition in adult dyslexic Hebrew readers. We compared functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) brain activation in 21 dyslexic readers and 22 typical readers, and examined the effects of diacritic marks that provide transparent but less familiar information and vowel letters that increase orthographic transparency without compromising familiarity. Dyslexic readers demonstrated reduced activation in left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) as compared to typical readers, as wel

Spatial working memory and arithmetic deficits in children with nonverbal learning difficulties.

Visuospatial working memory and its involvement in arithmetic were examined in two groups of 7- to 11-year-olds: one comprising children described by teachers as displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning difficulties (N = 21), the other a control group without learning disabilities (N = 21). The two groups were matched for verbal abilities, age, gender, and sociocultural level. The children were presented with a visuospatial working memory battery of recognition tests involving visual, spatial-sequential and spatial-simultaneous processes, and two arithmetic tasks (number ordering and written

Memory for syntax despite amnesia.

Syntactic persistence is a tendency for speakers to reproduce sentence structures independently of accompanying meanings, words, or sounds. The memory mechanisms behind syntactic persistence are not fully understood. Although some properties of syntactic persistence suggest a role for procedural memory, current evidence suggests that procedural memory (unlike declarative memory) does not maintain the abstract, relational features that are inherent to syntactic structures. In a study evaluating the contribution of procedural memory to syntactic persistence, patients with anterograde amnesia and

Dissociating recollection from familiarity: electrophysiological evidence that familiarity for faces is associated with a posterior old/new effect.

In recognition memory research, a tension exists between dual-process and single-process models of episodic retrieval. Dual-process models propose that 'familiarity' assessment and the 'recollection' of contextual information are independent processes, while single-process models claim that one common process supports retrieval. Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been used to show dissociations between the mid frontal and the left parietal ERP old/new effects, which have been associated with familiarity and recollection, respectively. While much ERP evidence favours dual-process theory, Yove

Age of acquisition affects object recognition and naming in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Twenty-two patients with a diagnosis of dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and a comparison group of 22 age-matched individuals took part in an object decision and picture naming task. The age of acquisition (AoA) of the picture names was manipulated (25 early, 25 late). The comparison group identified significantly more objects as real than the patients. While the comparison group made very few errors in object decision, DAT patients failed to classify significantly more late than early acquired objects as real. The patients also named significantly fewer pictures than the comparison group,

The FN400 indexes familiarity-based recognition of faces.

Separate event-related brain potential (ERP) components have been hypothesized to index familiarity and recollection processes that support recognition memory. A 300- to 500-ms mid-frontal FN400 old/new difference has been related to familiarity, whereas a 500- to 800-ms parietal old/new difference has been related to recollection. Other recent work has cast doubt on the FN400 familiarity hypothesis, especially its application to familiarity-based recognition of conceptually impoverished stimuli such as novel faces. Here we show that FN400 old/new differences can be observed with novel faces,

Hemispheric transfer and dyslexia: testing the deficit hypothesis for word and symmetry recognition using visual half-field tasks.

BACKGROUND: The interhemispheric transfer deficit theory proposes that individuals with dyslexia have impaired interhemispheric transfer, particularly affecting the integration of visual information from the left and right visual fields. This study aimed to evaluate this hypothesis by examining interhemispheric transfer in dyslexia using visual half-field tasks targeting both linguistic and visuospatial processing. METHODS: We examined interhemispheric transfer in dyslexia using two visual half-field tasks: a lexical decision task to assess written word processing, and a symmetry decision tas

Role of the occipito-temporal theta rhythm in hand visual identification.

Neuroimaging and EEG studies have shown that passive observation of the full body and of specific body parts is associated with 1) activity of an occipito-temporal region named the extrastriate body area (EBA), 2) amplitude modulations of a specific posterior event-related potential (ERP) component (N1/N190), and 3) a theta-band (4-7 Hz) synchronization recorded from occipito-temporal electrodes compatible with the location of EBA. To characterize the functional role of the occipito-temporal theta-band increase during the processing of body-part stimuli, we recorded EEG from healthy participan

Real-world size coding of solid objects, but not 2-D or 3-D images, in visual agnosia patients with bilateral ventral lesions.

Patients with visual agnosia show severe deficits in recognizing two-dimensional (2-D) images of objects, despite the fact that early visual processes such as figure-ground segmentation, and stereopsis, are largely intact. Strikingly, however, these patients can nevertheless show a preservation in their ability to recognize real-world objects -a phenomenon known as the 'real-object advantage' (ROA) in agnosia. To uncover the mechanisms that support the ROA, patients were asked to identify objects whose size was congruent or incongruent with typical real-world size, presented in different displ

Eye movements and postural control in dyslexic children performing different visual tasks.

The aim of this study was to examine eye movements and postural control performance among dyslexic children while reading a text and performing the Landolt reading task. Fifteen dyslexic and 15 non-dyslexic children were asked to stand upright while performing two experimental visual tasks: text reading and Landolt reading. In the text reading task, children were asked to silently read a text displayed on a monitor, while in the Landolt reading task, the letters in the text were replaced by closed circles and Landolt rings, and children were asked to scan each circle/ring in a reading-like fas

A different view on the Necker cube-Differences in multistable perception dynamics between Asperger and non-Asperger observers.

BACKGROUND: During observation of the Necker cube perception becomes unstable and alternates repeatedly between a from-above-perspective ("fap") and a from-below-perspective ("fbp") interpretation. Both interpretations are physically equally plausible, however, observers usually show an a priori top-down bias in favor of the fap interpretation. Patients with Autism spectrum disorder are known to show an altered pattern of perception with a focus on sensory details. In the present study we tested whether this altered perceptual processing affects their reversal dynamics and reduces the perceptu

Individual differences in involvement of the visual object recognition system during visual word recognition.

Individuals with dyslexia often evince reduced activation during reading in left hemisphere (LH) language regions. This can be observed along with increased activation in the right hemisphere (RH), especially in areas associated with object recognition - a pattern referred to as RH compensation. The mechanisms of RH compensation are relatively unclear. We hypothesize that RH compensation occurs when the RH object recognition system is called upon to supplement an underperforming LH visual word form recognition system. We tested this by collecting ERPs while participants with a range of reading

Orientation decoding in human visual cortex: new insights from an unbiased perspective.

The development of multivariate pattern analysis or brain "decoding" methods has substantially altered the field of fMRI research. Although these methods are highly sensitive to whether or not decodable information exists, the information they discover and make use of for decoding is often concealed within complex patterns of activation. This opacity of interpretation is embodied in influential studies showing that the orientation of visual gratings can be decoded from brain activity in human visual cortex with fMRI. Although these studies provided a compelling demonstration of the power of th
