Poland-Mobius syndrome in an infant girl.

Mobius syndrome is a rare condition of unclear origin, characterized by a unilateral or bilateral congenital facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction, which is frequently associated with limb anomalies . Poland described a condition in which there was unilateral absence of pectoralis major muscle and ipsilateral syndactyly. The combination of Poland-Mobius syndrome is rare, with an estimated prevalence 1:500 000. We describe a case of Poland-Mobius syndrome in association with congenital bilateral vocal fold immobility. To our knowldge, this is the first report of such an associatio

Double skin island pectoralis major myocutaneous flap with nipple-areola complex preservation: a case report.

A horizontal double skin island pectoralis major myocutaneous flap with preservation of nipple-areola complex is described, a different modification used to reconstruct a complex defect following radical resection of a locally advanced gingival carcinoma. The skin islands are horizontally separated by a distance of 2.5 cm but rely on one vascular pedicle for their blood supply. The muscle between the skin islands provides the soft tissue bulk between the internal mucosal and external skin lining. The need for a separate segmental flap or a split-thickness skin graft for mucosal lining was elim

Dilemma in management of hemorrhagic myositis in dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare inflammatory disorder affecting the muscle and skin. DM patients can present with spontaneous muscle hemorrhage, a potentially fatal complication. The best practice for management of hemorrhagic myositis in these patients remains unclear. Here we discuss the case of a patient who presented with progressive muscle weakness and intermittent rash that was diagnosed with dermatomyositis. During admission, she developed spontaneous hemorrhagic myositis of the right pectoralis major treated with surgical evacuation. She also developed a spontaneous left anterior thigh

Transient receptor potential channel 6 in human skeletal muscle fibers: Investigation in fresh and conserved tissue samples.

Transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6) channels constitute non-selective cation channels that are localized in the plasmalemma or sarcolemma, and have a leading permeability for the bivalent calcium ion. Animal models indicate an involvement of TRPC6 in malignant hyperthermia. The expression of TRPC6 in the sarcolemma has been demonstrated in the skeletal muscle fibers of mice. The importance of TRPC6 channels for the influx of calcium into the muscle cell has also been established. The presence of TRPC6 in tissues of human skeletal muscle is surmised. In order to confirm the presence

Axillary Lymph Nodes T2 Signal Intensity Characterization in MRI of Patients With Mucinous Breast Cancer: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the T2 signal intensity (SI) of axillary lymph nodes as a potential functional imaging marker for metastasis in patients with mucinous breast cancer. METHODS: A retrospective review of breast MRIs performed from April 2008 to March 2024 was conducted to identify patients with mucinous breast cancer and adenopathy. Two independent, masked readers qualitatively assessed the T2 SI of tumors and lymph nodes. The T2 SI ratio for adenopathy and contralateral normal lymph nodes was quantitatively measured using the ipsilateral pectoralis muscle as a reference. Comparisons betw

A Comparison of the Plyometric Performance of Upper Limbs between Experienced and Non-Experienced Athletes.

Although explosive upper-limb movements are far less studied than the equivalent lower-limb movements, they are important in many sports activities. The goal of this study was to explore, for the first time, the performance of street workout (SW) athletes who primarily focus on explosive and isometric strength in the upper limbs and to examine the effect of the contraction type on performance during a classical upper-body movement. Eighteen men took part in this study (age: 22.6 ± 2.1 years, height: 179.6 ± 7.1 cm, bodyweight: 71.9 ± 6.6 kg). Of these, nine practiced SW and nine practiced vari

Vaccination-associated lameness in warmblood horses after intramuscular injection.

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular vaccination is a routine component of equine medicine, but local muscle soreness may transiently affect gait symmetry. Objective data on vaccination-associated gait changes in horses are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether intramuscular vaccination induces measurable gait asymmetries depending on injection site, to inform recommendations on vaccination site selection and short-term exercise management. METHODS: In this prospective, randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled study, eighteen clinically sound Warmblood horses were enrolled and received an intramus

Comparative Effects of the Free Weights and Smith Machine Squat and Bench Press: The Important Role of Specificity for Strength Adaptations.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have compared strength-training adaptations between free weights (FW) and machine-guided exercises, those studies did not use a Smith machine (SM), which most closely replicates the exercises performed with FW. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the chronic effects of strength-focused, velocity-based training regimens using FW versus SM. METHODS: Thirty-seven sport-science students (14 female) were assigned, balanced by sex and relative strength, to either an FW or SM training group. The training program lasted 8 weeks (2 sessions/wk), and

Severe progressive respiratory involvement requiring ventilator support in autosomal recessive Bethlem myopathy. A case report.

Bethlem myopathy (BM) was first described in 1976 by Bethlem and van Wijngaarden in patients who presented a myopathy characterized by slowly progressive muscle weakness and typical flexion contractures of the long finger flexors, wrists, elbows, pectoralis muscles and ankles. Patients with Bethlem myopathy usually become symptomatic during the first or second decade of life. The condition is in most cases slowly progressive and more than two thirds of patients over 50 years of age may require aids for ambulation. Inheritance is usually autosomal dominant. However, patients with autosomal rece…

Chest Wall Synovial Sarcoma: A Unique Encounter at the Breast Base.

Synovial sarcomas most commonly arise in the para-articular locations of the extremities, such as the upper limbs, thigh, knee, ankle, and foot. Thoracic synovial sarcomas are a rare entity that can arise in the chest wall, pleura, lung, heart, or mediastinum. We present a case of a 23-year-old female with a complaint of swelling of the left breast. Examination demonstrated an enlarged left breast and a hard-fixed swelling without overlying skin changes or nipple retraction. Ultrasound showed a well-defined, solid-appearing lesion deep in the left breast parenchyma, which was adherent to the u

[Inner amputation of an upper extremity with impaired cerebral perfusion and lethal outcome].

An inner amputation of the upper extremity is understood to be a rupture of the arm's vascular nerve bundle as well as the shoulder's and scapular's stabilizing muscles and fibrous joints without damage to the dermal soft tissue sheath. This injury is a rare and grave incident which mostly occurs within the scope of a high-energy trauma and in cases of polytraumatized patients in combination with additional life-threatening injuries. In the literature this is referred to by the terms scapulothoracic dissociation (SD) and closed forequarter amputation--the entity of SD was first described by Or

Changing the incubation temperature during embryonic myogenesis influences the weight performance and meat quality of male and female broilers.

Eggs of broilers were initially incubated at 37.8°C, then at 38.8°C (group H) and 36.8°C (group L) between embryonic days 7 to 10 (time A) and days 10 to 13 (time B) and further incubated at 37.8°C until hatching. The chicks were fattened until day 35 and then slaughtered. The effect of treatment, time, and sex and their interactions on carcass and meat quality traits were determined. No significant impact of the "treatment time" was analysed, but "treatment" and "sex" and their interactions influenced (P < 0.05) the different parameters. After hatching, group L broilers were heavier (P < 0.05

The biomechanical demands of manual scaling on the shoulders & neck of dental hygienists.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the postural and muscular demands placed on the shoulders and neck of dental hygienists when performing a simulated manual scaling task. Nineteen healthy female dental hygienists performed 30-min of simulated manual scaling on a manikin head in a laboratory setting. Surface electromyography was used to monitor muscle activity from several neck and shoulder muscles, and neck and arm elevation kinematics were evaluated using motion capture. The simulated scaling task resulted in a large range of neck and arm elevation angles and excessive low-level muscu

Restoration of Elbow Flexion.

Active elbow flexion is required to position the hand in space, and loss of this function is debilitating. Nerve transfers or nerve grafts to restore elbow flexion may be options when the target muscle is viable, but in delayed reconstruction when the biceps and brachialis are atrophied or damaged, muscle transfer options should be considered. Muscle transfer options are discussed with attention to the advantages and disadvantages of each transfer option.

Is ribosomal capacity a potential metabolic marker of muscle development? Measurement by muscular biopsy.

Metabolic markers of muscle metabolism could help geneticists and nutritionists predict the breast meat development of chickens. The aim of the current study was to test the ribosomal capacity (CS), a potential metabolic marker, and to evaluate a simple biopsy method on the pectoralis major muscle. Ribosomal capacity was measured in three commercial meat chicken genotypes differing in their growth rate. Fast-, medium-, and slow-growing male chickens were fed using three commercial dietary programs of increasing energy and protein concentration (nine treatments). Biopsy was performed at 4 wk of
