Peer bullying victimization, psychological distress, and the protective role of school connectedness among adolescents.

PURPOSE: The current study examined the association between prior-, recent-, and long-term peer bullying with psychological distress (i.e., depression, anxiety) and the protective role of school connectedness and extracurricular involvement among youth in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS). METHODS: Data from the FFCWS were analyzed. Bullying victimization was self-reported at ages 9 and 15 via the Peer Bullying Scale. Prior bullying was defined as bullying at age 9 only, recent bullying as bullying at age 15 only, and long-term bullying as bullying experiences in both y

Effectiveness of video-based peer feedback in self-training for skill acquisition among surgical residents.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the comparative effectiveness of video-based peer feedback (VPF) versus video-based expert feedback (VEF) in fundamental skill acquisition among residents. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 33 surgical residents were allocated to either VPF (n = 17) or VEF (n = 16) groups. Both groups completed training in three fundamental skills: (1) wound dressing change with suture removal, (2) indwelling urinary catheterization, and (3) simple interrupted suture. Following training, performance was assessed via objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). RESULTS: B

A scoping review of key domains for youth outcome measurement in alcohol and other drug treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The alcohol and other drug treatment needs of young people differ from adults. It is important that outcomes measured in this client population are meaningful and use tools that are validated among young people. However, there has been no research to date that has looked at which outcomes and tools are most relevant for this population. This scoping review identifies outcome domains for young people that are supported by the research literature and clinical practice frameworks and identifies important evidence gaps. We also assessed which validated tools exists to measure these d

Predictors and Consequences of Emerging Adulthood Binge Drinking.

OBJECTIVE: We examined binge drinking patterns during emerging adulthood (EA) and their relation to risk in adolescence and consequences in adulthood. METHOD: Growth mixture modeling was employed to identify trajectories of binge drinking across EA (ages 18-29). Parent, peer, and individual risk factors at ages 15 and 16 were examined as predictors. Class membership was used as a predictor of poor mental and physical health and alcohol problems in adulthood (ages 31, 34, 41). RESULTS: Four patterns of binge drinking emerged (n = 476, 56% female, 99% Non-Hispanic White): Abstainers & Minimal

Friendship Bench intervention to address depression and improve HIV care engagement among adolescents living with HIV in Malawi: Study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. Comorbid depression is prevalent among adolescents living with HIV (ALWH) and poses numerous challenges to HIV care engagement and retainment. We present a pilot trial designed to investigate feasibility, fidelity, and acceptability of an adapted and an enhanced Friendship Bench intervention (henceforth: AFB and EFB) in reducing depression and improving engagement in HIV care among ALWH in Malawi. METHODS: Design: Participants will be randomized to one of three conditions: the Friendship Bench i

"I Laughed Along for Years But Hated It Inside:" Understanding Nuance in Peer Teasing Experiences Using a Thematic Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peer teasing is ubiquitous, yet ambiguous in nature. Despite recent attempts to delineate and clarify differences in teasing experienced as playful versus harmful, there remains overlap and complexity in these interactions. In the current study, we present a conceptual model of teasing, which includes many nested features that dynamically interact within a teasing episode. Using this conceptual model to guide our work, the goal of the current study was to use qualitative inquiry to bring further conceptual clarity to the overlap between teasing that is experienced as playful vers

Facebook as a Strategy To Deliver a Peer Navigation Intervention for Recently Incarcerated Women with Opioid Use Disorder: A Mixed Methods Descriptive Profile.

Recovery support and treatment linkages are critical during transitions from incarceration to community but can be challenging to deliver to hard-to-reach populations. This paper will examine Facebook contacts between peer navigators (PNs) and women with opioid use disorder (OUD) following jail release to explore women's use of PN services, including purpose and content of Facebook messages. As part of a larger clinical trial under the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN), PNs provided OUD treatment navigation and recovery support for 12 weeks following women's release from jail

Mapping the psychosocial network of Kenyan adolescents: the pivotal role of loneliness and gender-specific pathways.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a critical yet understudied determinant of adolescent mental health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While its prevalence and impact have been well-documented in Western contexts, little is known about its role within the psychosocial networks of youth in many African contexts, where social structures and gender norms may diverge sharply. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional network analysis using data from 1,445 Kenyan secondary school students. Participants completed validated self-report measures of depression, anxie

Pragmatic Language Skills of Turkish-Speaking Children Who Stutter.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between pragmatic language skills of children who stutter (CWS) and the frequency of stuttering, with a focus on the development of these skills through peer interaction in the school years. It is well-known that CWS may face social disadvantages at school due to their limited peer interaction, which may pose a risk to the development of their pragmatic language skills. METHOD: The study involved 64 CWS aged between 60 and 106 months. Stuttering frequency was determined by analyzing children's spontaneous speech recordings during p

Late adolescents entering college intending a career as police officers hold more right-leaning views than their peers.

One longstanding explanation for bias and excessive force in policing is selection-the assertion that those who select to work in law enforcement are more likely to hold far-right, intolerant, and antiegalitarian, views than the public. While intuitive and widely believed, the evidence in support of the selection hypothesis is surprisingly thin. We offer a vital contribution to the literature by exploring selection at one of its earliest phases: late adolescents entering college and the career-formulation stage of life. Utilizing surveys of over 13 million late adolescents collected across 44

The relationship between young people, social media use and alcohol use: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media use is now a significant part of modern daily life. Little is known about how social media impacts young peoples' drinking behaviours and drinking-related consequences. This cohort study aims to explore the prospective relationship between social media use and future drinking. METHODS: 1473 alcohol naïve young people, who at Wave 5 (aged 12-13 years) reported no lifetime alcohol use, were included (social media use, peer alcohol use, and covariates were also reported at Wave 5). At Wave 8 (aged 17-18 years), participants reported alcohol use outcomes, includi

Lessons Learned From a Peer-Supported Differentiated Care and Nutritional Supplementation for People With TB in a Southern Indian State.

Two critical components of patient support systems for people with TB are regular counseling and locally managed nutritional support. As part of an ongoing differentiated TB care initiative called Tamil Nadu Kasanoi Erappila Thittam (meaning TB death-free initiative in Tamil, TN-KET) to reduce TB deaths, adults with TB with very severe undernutrition, respiratory insufficiency, or poor performance status are identified at diagnosis (triage-positive) and prioritized for referral, comprehensive clinical assessment, and inpatient care. Between January and June 2023, in 6 districts, a pilot exerci

Inclusive Education for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Ethiopia: Stakeholder Views on Benefits, Disadvantages and Priorities for Action.

Children with developmental disabilities (DD) including intellectual disability and autism, experience exclusion from social life and education in Ethiopia. Including children with DD in mainstream inclusive classes has potential to expand access to education and uphold their right to learn alongside typically developing peers. However, inadequate support in inclusive settings can hinder their participation and educational achievement. This study explores the perspectives of stakeholders on the ways in which inclusive education can support the needs or exacerbate the challenges of children wit

Designing Peer-Led Strategies Meeting the Needs of People With Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders.

This article documents the contribution of peer support in reducing harms of substance use and advancing recovery. Data based on the experience of participants were collected using semi-structured interviews. Twenty-three participants were interviewed including four peer support workers. Findings were drawn from a thematic analysis of interview data and focused on strategies to improve the delivery of peer support services. We discuss services offered, how they impacted the lives of service recipients, what peer support workers found helpful; the value of peer support; and the challenges, barr

Facial impressions of niceness influence children's interpretations of peers' ambiguous behavior.

Children infer personality traits from faces when they are asked explicitly which face appears nice or mean. Less is known about how children use face-trait information implicitly to make behavioral evaluations. We used the Ambiguous Situations Protocol to explore how children use face-trait information to form interpretations of ambiguous situations when the behavior or intention of the target child was unclear. On each trial, children (N = 144, age range = 4-11.95 years; 74 girls, 67 boys, 3 gender not specified; 70% White, 10% other or mixed race, 5% Asian, 4% Black, 1% Indigenous, 9% not s

Cadê o Kauê? Co-design and acceptability testing of a chat-story aimed at enhancing youth participation in the promotion of mental health in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is vital for public health, yet many interventions fail to recognise adolescents as proactive community contributors. This paper discusses the co-design and acceptability testing of a chat-story intervention to enhance Brazilian adolescents' participation in the promotion of mental health in their peer communities. We specifically highlight the iterative process of co-creating this intervention with community stakeholders. METHODS: The co-design was led by researchers, a youth collaborative group, and health-tech experts. Part 1 included quantitative (n =

Child maltreatment and peer relationship quality: Types and timing of maltreatment and gender differences.

INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates that child maltreatment can negatively impact adolescent peer relationships. It is not well understood, however, how the type of maltreatment and its timing (when it occurs) affects the dimensions of peer relationship quality (i.e., companionship, conflict, satisfaction, and intimacy) and differences between genders. This study examines the effects of type and timing of child maltreatment on peer relationship quality, while also exploring the role of gender differences. METHODS: This study involved 851 adolescents (56.1% girls, 56.2% Black, and 26.8% low-in
