[Ankle sprain in youth athlete].

Lateral ankle sprain is the most frequent musculoskeletal injury in the young athlete. Myths, dogma and common belief are regularly encountered when discussing this injury, for which the scientific literature does not prevail yet. In the youth, the growing skeleton further influences the diagnosis and therapeutic processes, as well as the healing potential. For the athlete, a fast recovery and return to sports without recurrence are a priority. In this specific context, an integrated management of the ankle sprain in the young athlete must be based on an adequate diagnosis, a sound knowledge o

Family-Based Dietary Counselling in Pediatric Obesity: A Proposed System-Oriented Framework Integrating Home, School, and Social Environments.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity is a complex, multifactorial condition that requires comprehensive and sustained interventions. Despite the central role of dietary modification in obesity management, current approaches to dietary counselling remain heterogeneous and often fail to account for the broader environmental and social determinants of eating behavior. In pediatric populations, dietary habits are strongly influenced by family dynamics, home food environments, school settings, and peer interactions, highlighting the need for system-oriented intervention models. Methods: This st

An integrative review of adolescent voice on vaccination.

PROBLEM: Adolescents are a critical population for immunization efforts, yet their voice in vaccination decisions remains underrepresented. Vaccine decision-making during adolescence is frequently parent-driven, limiting adolescent engagement and agency. ELIGIBILITY: Studies were included if they examined adolescent perspectives on vaccination, involved participants aged 10-19 years, and addressed vaccines on the WHO-recommended immunization schedule. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods peer-reviewed studies were eligible. Studies without direct adolescent voice were excluded. METHO

Impact of nutrition on skin wound healing and aesthetic outcomes: A comprehensive narrative review.

BACKGROUND: While current wound treatment strategies often focus on antimicrobials and topical agents, the role of nutrition in wound healing and aesthetic outcomes is crucial but frequently overlooked. This review assesses the impact of specific nutrients and preoperative nutritional status on surgical outcomes. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, from the inception of the study to October 2023. The study focused on the influence of macronutrients and micronutrients on aesthetic outcomes, the optimization of preoperative

What makes a violent mind? The interplay of parental rearing, dark triad personality traits and propensity for violence in a sample of German adolescents.

Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy are socially aversive personality traits that are strongly linked to the propensity of violence. A central determinate of aggression and violence is parental rearing. Interestingly, while the origin of the development of Dark Triad is not yet entirely understood, next to genetic and environmental factors, literature points towards an influence of parenting styles to the development of dark traits. Therefore, in a sample of 1366 9th grade students (mean age 14.89,), we assessed the interplay between parental rearing, dark triad traits, observation of

Education as a strategy for managing occupational-related musculoskeletal pain: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is the primary contributor to disability worldwide. There is a growing consensus that MSK pain is a recurrent multifactorial condition underpinned by health and lifestyle factors. Studies suggest that education on work-related pain and individualised advice could be essential and effective for managing persistent MSK pain. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to map the existing educational resources for work-related MSK (WRMSK) pain, and the effects of implementing educational strategies in the workplace on managing WRMSK pain. METHODS:

Emergence of sex differences in the development of substance use and abuse during adolescence.

Substance use and abuse begin during adolescence. Male and female adolescent humans initiate use at comparable rates, but males increase use faster. In adulthood, more men than women use and abuse addictive drugs. However, some women progress more rapidly from initiation of use to entry into treatment. In animal models, adolescent males and females consume addictive drugs similarly. However, reproductively mature females acquire self-administration faster, and in some models, escalate use more. Sex/gender differences exist in neurobiologic factors mediating both reinforcement (dopamine, opioid

From Anxiety, Depression to Major Neurocognitive Disorders: Exploring Their Association With the Risk Factors for Dementia.

Dementia presents an escalating public health challenge worldwide. While traditional risk factors such as metabolic syndromes and lifestyle choices have been widely examined, growing evidence highlights the role of mental health conditions in the development of dementia. Our manuscript is a narrative review of peer-reviewed systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining the association between common psychiatric disorders, namely depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, and the onset of neurocognitive decline. Additional factors such as chron

Examining the layered veil of pay transparency: Implications for perceived ambiguity, sensemaking, and negotiation.

In the last decade, pay transparency-making pay information more accessible and understandable-has become a defining workplace reform. We examine the common assumption that pay transparency reduces pay disparities by improving negotiation outcomes. Our cross-disciplinary review suggests that pay transparency's effects on negotiation hinge on three factors: (1) how transparency is operationalized (i.e., what type of pay information is shared); (2) how people interpret the information provided; and (3) whether transparency alone can motivate and equip individuals to leverage that information to

Drug treatment process indicators for probationers and prediction of recidivism.

Research has shown that substance abuse treatment is associated with reduced criminal activity as well as reduced drug use. An increasingly important aspect of treatment evaluation, however, is understanding more about the therapeutic process involved. Based on a sample of 279 probationers assigned to residential treatment for drug use problems, the purpose of this study is to examine several elements of treatment process and how they influence recidivism. Rearrest rate during a 2-year follow-up study period was 36%, and survival analysis showed it was directly related to poorer during-treatme

Psychosocial correlates of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use: findings from a Nigerian university.

The possible correlates of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use were investigated in a survey conducted among undergraduate students of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Factors that emerged as common correlates to the three substances investigated were peer influence, self-reported poor mental health, religiousity, parental/guardian supervision, perceived availability and perceived harmfulness. In addition, drinking and smoking were found to be commoner among the male sex and among respondents who reported study difficulty. There was also a significant positive relationship between cannabis use…

Deaf role-models for Deaf children in hearing families: a scoping review.

The use of Deaf role-models (DRMs) with Deaf children born into hearing families is a practice aimed at improving outcomes for Deaf children, yet there is little peer-reviewed research available to influence future direction of such. This scoping review directs attention to available research on DRMs as a socio-linguistic and cultural viewpoint for balancing a predominantly audiological approach for early intervention for Deaf children. Systematic database searches initially yielded 132 records, of which seven articles were included in this scoping review. Findings are presented as five themes

Wildtype peers rescue social play and 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalization deficits in juvenile female Cacna1c heterozygous rats.

BACKGROUND: Healthy brain development depends on early social practices and experiences. The risk gene CACNA1C is implicated in numerous neuropsychiatric disorders, in which key characteristics include deficits in social functioning and communication. Recently, we reported sex-dependent impairments in social behavior and ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) in juvenile heterozygous Cacna1c+/- (HET) rats. Specifically, HET females displayed increases in rough-and-tumble play that eliminated the typically observed sex difference between male and female rats. Interestingly, female wild-type Cacna1c+/+

Language training for generalization.

This paper presents a classroom-based language intervention program for preschool children with language delays or deficits. A major goal of the program is to ensure that children acquire missing skills through daily speech therapy and that they actively generalize these skills from therapy times to other classroom activities. This paper presents data collected with two children during daily speech therapy sessions and daily play activities. Instances in which the children generalized new language acquired in therapy to play activities will be discussed as well as instances in which the childr

24-hour movement behaviors of physical activity, screen time, and sleep in youth with down syndrome compared to typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Youth with Down syndrome (DS) tend to have a higher prevalence of obesity compared to their peers with typical development (TD). Physical activity, sleep and screen time are modifiable behaviors which can influence childhood obesity. To better understand an individual's activity, these behaviors should be examined concurrently versus independently over a 24-h period. OBJECTIVE: To pilot the examination and comparison of physical activity, sleep, and screen and non-screen sedentary behaviors concurrently in a 24-h period, and determine if 24-h guidelines were met in a sample of you
