Perception of heavy work operations by tank truck drivers.

Seven male tank truck drivers were followed for about 3 h during ordinary work. They rated the perception of heavy work operations on Borg's CR-10 scale. The heart rates were monitored every minute. The hose was pulled out an average of 22.3 m and the corresponding mean rating was 3.2, a little above 'Moderate' on the CR-10 scale. The heart rate averaged 137 beats/min at the end of this operation. When transforming the physiological parameter heart rate to a subjective strain intensity, surprisingly high agreement was obtained between the results from the field study and the predicted ratings.…

Health visitors' awareness and perception of clinical genetic services.

A questionnaire was sent to 84 health visitors to assess their awareness and perception of genetic services and how they perceived their role in the referral of patients. The study showed that while health visitors had a reasonable knowledge of the more obvious aspects of genetic services, there were a number of areas in which they were unsure. The respondents did not identify themselves as prime initiators in the process of referring patients to a genetic service, although they appeared able to identify families on their caseloads for whom this service may be relevant. Health visitors viewed …

Odor perception in children in relation to nasal obstruction.

To determine whether nasal obstruction in children results in impaired nasal function, olfactory sensitivity was assessed in 65 children with various degrees of nasal obstruction and in 13 children without nasal obstruction. Overall, olfactory detection thresholds were directly related to clinical ratings of degree of nasal obstruction. Of the subjects with nasal obstruction attributable to adenoid hypertrophy, 28 received adenoidectomy; when retested 2 to 28 months later, 20 of the 28 subjects showed generally commensurate reductions in nasal obstruction ratings and olfactory detection thresh

Evaluation of the speech perception in noise (SPIN) test.

Several investigations were perfomed with normal hearing subjects to determine the effects of presentation level and signal-to-babble ratio on the speech perception in noise (SPIN) test. The SPIN test contains sentences that simulate a range of contextual situations encountered in everyday speech communication. Findings from several representative patients with sensorineural hearing loss demonstrate the possible clinical utility of the test to measure the effects of context on speech discrimination.

Visual agnosia: the dual deficit of perception and recognition.

This case of visual agnosia is of special interest because of its causation by trauma, of the unusually long follow-up (10 1/2 years), and the evidence for dual deficits of recognition and perception. Although most of the findings were characteristic of associative visual agnosia with preserved perceptual function, the poor copying, contrasted to better spontaneous drawing, suggested apperceptive agnosia as well. Prosopagnosia, alexia without agraphia, Balint's syndrome, visual static agnosia and simultanagnosia were also observed. The patient had persisting amnestic syndrome, but no dementia …

[Changes in the subjective perception of daylight (author's transl)].

It is pointed out that the basic model of "artificial daylight" in the open is not appropriate for reading and writing. Man has become accustomed to reading with daylight coming from the side through a window. Daylight indoors differs from daylight outfoord through a yellowish tendency, to which the human eye is accustomed in the presence of the usual light intensity indoors. Fluorescent "daylight" or "neutral white" lights are therefore experienced by the human eye as too blue and should only be used for special purposes with very high luminous intensities. Daylight unfortunately cannot yet b

Loudness perception for short-duration tones in masking noise.

The effect of masking noise on the temporal summation of loudness is investigated here by performing loudness balances between a standard 500-msec tone burst (1000 Hz at either 20-, 50-, or 80-dB SPL) and either masked or unmasked comparison tone bursts (1000 Hz with durations between 10 and 640 msec). In all but two instances, the obtained functions relating SPL for equal loudness to stimulus duration could be plotted as two line segments that met to form a knee. The slopes of the line segments at durations less than the kneepoints are altered by the masking noise, becoming less steep with in

Human perception of avian biodiversity in naturalistic auditory scenes.

Natural environments are filled with a diverse array of sound sources, from bird vocalizations and insect stridulations to waterfalls and wind noise. The sounds often co-occur, arriving at the ear of human listeners as a mixture of the different sources. The auditory system is tasked with segregating the individual sound sources of the mixture into meaningful representations. In contrast with human auditory perception in urban environments, which include speech and music, little is known about our capacity to segregate mixtures common in natural environments. Here, we report on the capacities …

EHR perception and momentary well-being in oncology professionals.

BACKGROUND: Digital systems increasingly shape oncology workflows, yet their impact on professionals' momentary well-being remains poorly understood. Existing evidence relies on retrospective self-reports and lacks real-time, multimodal data. We examined whether momentary perception of an oncology electronic health record (EHR), differentiated into instrumental quality (e.g. usability) and noninstrumental quality (e.g. visual esthetics), relates to oncology professionals' concurrent psychophysiological well-being during routine clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multimodal ambulator…

Hot-cold water sound perception and auditory-thermal discrimination.

This study aimed to determine whether individuals can discriminate the temperature state of water using auditory cues alone and to identify the acoustic, perceptual, and neurocognitive factors associated with this ability. Sixty-three volunteers aged 18-25 years with normal hearing participated. Participants were presented with prerecorded sounds of hot and cold water being poured into four types of cups (glass, plastic, paper, porcelain) and completed discrimination and matching tasks while auditory processing and event-related potential measures were obtained. Results from Spectral-Temporall

Temporal kinetics of brain state effects on visual perception.

Fluctuations between attention and inattention shape sensory representation, yet the dynamics of these brain state transitions and whether inattention leads to a loss of sensory information remain unclear. We examined how focused wakefulness (ON state) and external inattention (OFF state) affect human perception and early visual responses. In two experiments, we investigated the temporal kinetics of brain state changes during stimulus processing and assessed fluctuations across extended periods of time. Using theta activity in MEG sensors, a classifier distinguished ON and OFF states on a sing…

Enhancing Robotic Grasping Detection Using Visual-Tactile Fusion Perception.

With the advancement of tactile sensors, researchers increasingly integrate tactile perception into robotics, but only for tasks such as object reconstruction, classification, recognition, and grasp state assessment. In this paper, we rethink the relationship between visual and tactile perception and propose a novel robotic grasping detection method based on visual-tactile perception. Initially, we construct a visual-tactile dataset containing the grasp stability for each potential grasping position. Next, we introduce a novel Grasp Stability Prediction Module (GSPM) to generate a grasp stabil…

Prewired static visual receptive fields for environment-agnostic perception.

Biological brains can effortlessly adapt to continuously changing stimulus environments, whereas conventional deep neural networks (DNNs) re … fic variance. The static visual filters helped prevent local texture biases, leading to shape-based perception similar to that of primates. These findings highlight an intrinsic biological strategy that enables reliable continual learning in dynamic and unpredictable environments.
