Measures of binaural hearing in children with a history of asymmetric otitis media with effusion.

This study addresses the effect of early asymmetric hearing loss in children, owing to otitis media with effusion (OME), on binaural hearing. Five children who had suffered from predominantly unilateral OME between the ages of 2 and 4 years and who were not treated for OME at any time participated in this study when they were about 12 years of age. All children had normal hearing at the time of testing. Data were compared to normative values obtained previously from normal-hearing adults. We measured the auditory brainstem response (ABR), the binaural interaction component (BIC) in the ABR, th

Catastrophe optics theory unveils the localised wave aberration features that generate ghost images.

Monocular polyplopia (ghost or multiple images) is a serious visual impediment for some people who report seeing two (diplopia), three (triplopia) or even more images. Polyplopia is expected to appear if the point spread function (PSF) has multiple intensity cores (a dense concentration of a large portion of the radiant flux contained in the PSF) relatively separated from each other, each of which contributes to a distinct image. We present a theory that assigns these multiple PSF cores to specific features of aberrated wavefronts, thereby accounting optically for the perceptual phenomenon of

Automatic GRBAS Scoring of Pathological Voices using Deep Learning and a Small Set of Labeled Voice Data.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory-perceptual evaluation frameworks, such as the grade-roughness-breathiness-asthenia-strain (GRBAS) scale, are the gold standard for the quantitative evaluation of pathological voice quality. However, the evaluation is subjective; thus, the ratings lack reproducibility due to inter- and intra-rater variation. Prior researchers have proposed deep-learning-based automatic GRBAS score estimation to address this problem. However, these methods require large amounts of labeled voice data. Therefore, this study investigates the potential of automatic GRBAS estimation using deep le

Tinnitus Does Not Interfere with Auditory and Speech Perception.

Tinnitus is a sound heard by 15% of the general population in the absence of any external sound. Because external sounds can sometimes mask tinnitus, tinnitus is assumed to affect the perception of external sounds, leading to hypotheses such as "tinnitus filling in the temporal gap" in animal models and "tinnitus inducing hearing difficulty" in human subjects. Here we compared performance in temporal, spectral, intensive, masking and speech-in-noise perception tasks between 45 human listeners with chronic tinnitus (18 females and 27 males with a range of ages and degrees of hearing loss) and 2

Auditory cortical forward masking effects in squirrel monkeys with unilateral noise-induced hearing loss.

Forward masking provides a sensitive measure of temporal and spectral processing in the auditory system and reflects underlying inhibitory mechanisms in auditory cortex. The present study examined how unilateral, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) alters cortical forward-masking properties in the primary auditory cortex (A1) of squirrel monkeys. Multi-unit responses were recorded from A1 of two control and two NIHL animals six months after right-ear acoustic overstimulation (1 kHz, 136 dB SPL, 3 h). Sequential masker-probe tones were presented with a 10 ms interval while masker frequency was va

Tinnitus, masked speech perception, and auditory event-related potentials in clinically normal-hearing adults.

Tinnitus can increase stress and anxiety and reduce quality of life. Compared to listeners with normal hearing and no tinnitus, listeners with tinnitus (with or without hearing loss) often have greater difficulty segregating competing speech. Previous studies have investigated neural correlates of tinnitus using the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs). Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) and ERPs were measured in 29 listeners with tinnitus and 25 listeners without tinnitus; all were clinically normal hearing, with pure-tone average (PTA) thresholds <25 dB HL across 500, 1000, 2000,

The tonotopy of tinnitus: comparison between acoustic masking and intracochlear electrical stimulation through cochlear implant.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between tinnitus pitch and audiometric profile with the frequency of the most effective stimulus for tinnitus relief using either acoustic or electrical stimulation with cochlear-implant (CI). DESIGN: The pitch and loudness of tinnitus were assessed and tinnitus perception measured with a visual analogue scale (0-10) during acoustic masking or electrical stimulation with CI on different frequencies. A reduction in tinnitus loudness (RT) >50% was considered significant. STUDY SAMPLE: 52 patients (53 ± 17yrs, 61.5%F-38.5%M) with sensorineural hearing loss

Delayed access to conscious processing in multiple sclerosis: Reduced cortical activation and impaired structural connectivity.

Although multiple sclerosis (MS) is frequently accompanied by visuo-cognitive impairment, especially functional brain mechanisms underlying this impairment are still not well understood. Consequently, we used a functional MRI (fMRI) backward masking task to study visual information processing stratifying unconscious and conscious in MS. Specifically, 30 persons with MS (pwMS) and 34 healthy controls (HC) were shown target stimuli followed by a mask presented 8-150 ms later and had to compare the target to a reference stimulus. Retinal integrity (via optical coherence tomography), optic tract i

The influence of voice quality and multi-talker babble noise on sentence processing and recall performance in school children using cochlear implant and/or hearing aids.

PURPOSE: This study examines the influence of voice quality and multi-talker babble noise on processing and storage performance in a working memory task performed by children using cochlear implants (CI) and/or hearing aids (HA). METHODS: Twenty-three children with a hearing impairment using CI and/or HA participated. Age range was between 6 and 13 years. The Competing Language Processing Task (CLPT) was assessed in three listening conditions; a typical voice presented in quiet, a dysphonic voice in quiet, and a typical voice in multi-talker babble noise (signal-to-noise ratio +10 dB). Spread of excitation varies for different electrical pulse shapes and stimulation modes in cochlear implants.

In cochlear implants (CI) bipolar (BP) electrical stimulation has been suggested as a method to reduce the spread of current along the cochlea. However, behavioral measurements in BP mode have shown either similar or worse performance than in monopolar (MP) mode. This could be explained by a bimodal excitation pattern, with two main excitation peaks at the sites of the stimulating electrodes. We measured the spread of excitation (SOE) by means of the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP), obtained using the forward-masked paradigm. The aim was to measure the bimodality of the ex

Effects of age and hearing loss on the relationship between discrimination of stochastic frequency modulation and speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability. DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

Association between cardiovascular health and hearing function: pure-tone and distortion product otoacoustic emission measures.

PURPOSE: A reduction in hearing sensitivity is often considered to be a normal age-related change. Recent studies have revisited prior ways of thinking about sensory changes over time, uncovering health variables other than age that play a significant role in sensory changes. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, cardiovascular (CV) health, pure-tone thresholds at 1000 to 4000 Hz, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), with and without contralateral noise, were measured in 101 participants age 10-78 years. RESULTS: Persons in the "old" age category (49-78 years) had worse pu

Word-recognition performance in interrupted noise by young listeners with normal hearing and older listeners with hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: The most common complaint of adults with hearing loss is understanding speech in noise. One class of masker that may be particularly useful in the assessment of speech-in-noise abilities is interrupted noise. Interrupted noise usually is a continuous noise that has been multiplied by a square wave that produces alternating intervals of noise and silence. Wilson and Carhart found that spondaic word thresholds for listeners with normal hearing were 28 dB lower in an interrupted noise than in a continuous noise, whereas listeners with hearing loss experienced only an 11 dB difference.

Effortful and automatic information processing in boys with ADHD and specific learning disorders.

Boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, N = 50), Specific Learning Disorder (LD, N = 45), combined Specific Learning Disorder and ADHD (LD/ADHD, N = 25), and controls (N = 51) completed effortful and automatic information processing tasks based on Treisman and Gelade's (1980) "information integration theory". ADHD and LD/ADHD subjects did not differ from controls at baseline or under feedback and reward conditions, suggesting that they were investing similar levels of mental effort in the tasks. The LD group had a superior performance in the effortful task and an inferior per

Predicting performance on the digits-in-noise test in noise and reverberation using the speech transmission index.

This study investigated the effects of noise and reverberation on recognition of Dutch digits-in-noise (DIN) test triplets. The findings demonstrate that the STIDIN, an adaptation to the standard speech transmission index (STI), provides a reliable, low‑error predictor of DIN test performance in conditions with noise and/or reverberation when only a single speech recognition threshold (SRT) measurement in noise is completed. To achieve this, twenty-four normal-hearing (NH) adults completed adaptive SRT measurements in noise-only, reverberation-only and combined noise and reverberation conditio

Real-Time Conversation Comprehension in Younger and Older Adults: The Effects of Noise, Visual Speech, Speaker Switch, and Context.

This study investigated older and younger adults' conversational speech understanding using an established topic monitoring task to assess real-time semantic processing. Twenty-three younger adults (mean age = 26.5 years) and 19 older adults (mean age = 71.3 years) monitored for topic targets in 24 dialogues (2-3 minutes each). The impact on monitoring response time and accuracy of two message-level factors (when speakers switch; contextual predictability) was assessed while manipulating two signal-level factors (presentation modality; noise level). Results showed that presentation modality af

Associations between the medial olivocochlear reflex, middle-ear muscle reflex, and sentence-in-noise recognition using steady and pulsed noise elicitors.

The middle-ear muscle reflex (MEMR) and medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) modify peripheral auditory function, which may reduce masking and improve speech-in-noise (SIN) recognition. Previous work and our pilot data suggest that the two reflexes respond differently to static versus dynamic noise elicitors. However, little is known about how the two reflexes work in tandem to contribute to SIN recognition. We hypothesized that SIN recognition would be significantly correlated with the strength of the MEMR and with the strength of the MOCR. Additionally, we hypothesized that SIN recognition wou

Binaural interaction in human auditory brainstem and middle-latency responses affected by sound frequency band, lateralization predictability, and attended modality.

The binaural interaction component (BIC) of the auditory evoked potential is the difference between the waveforms of the binaural response and the sum of left and right monaural responses. This investigation examined BICs of the auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle-latency (MLR) responses concerning three objectives: 1) the level of the auditory system at which low-frequency dominance in BIC amplitudes begins when the binaural temporal fine structure is more influential with lower- than higher-frequency content; 2) how BICs vary as a function of frequency and lateralization predictability, as c

Tone language experience-dependent advantage in pitch representation in brainstem and auditory cortex is maintained under reverberation.

Long-term language and music experience enhances neural representation of temporal attributes of pitch in the brainstem and auditory cortex in favorable listening conditions. Herein we examine whether brainstem and cortical pitch mechanisms-shaped by long-term language experience-maintain this advantage in the presence of reverberation-induced degradation in pitch representation. Brainstem frequency following responses (FFR) and cortical pitch responses (CPR) were recorded concurrently from Chinese and English-speaking natives, using a Mandarin word exhibiting a high rising pitch (/yi2/).
