Potential risks, treatment strategies, and treatment outcomes of retrograde peri-implantitis: A systematic review.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Potential risk factors of retrograde peri-implantitis have been identified from literature reviews; however, only clinical reports or isolated risk factors were evaluated. Retrograde peri-implantitis likely involves multifactorial risks, and outcomes following treatment remain underexplored. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify factors associated with retrograde peri-implantitis occurrence and evaluate outcomes following specific treatment approaches. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Database of System

Periradicular repair after single-visit root canal treatment using sonic irrigant activation of teeth with apical periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore whether using sonic irrigant activation during endodontic treatment favors periradicular repair in teeth with apical periodontitis. MATERIALS & METHODS: One clinician treated 140 posterior (either premolar or molar) asymptomatic teeth with periapical lesions: 70 were randomly assigned to the sonic activation with EndoActivator (EA) group, and 70 were treated by conventional needle irrigation (CNI). Both groups underwent chemomechanical root canal preparation using 35/04 diameter rotary files and 2.5% NaOCl as the irrigant. NaOCl was sonically activated

Effects of Non-Surgical Endodontic Treatment on Inflammatory and Renal Markers in Chronic Kidney Disease and Healthy Patients With Apical Periodontitis.

This prospective study evaluated changes in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and renal markers like urea, creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) following non-surgical endodontic treatment (NSET) in 37 chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 37 healthy patients with apical periodontitis. Periapical radiographs and serum biomarkers were evaluated at baseline and 6 months using appropriate statistical tests. Following NSET, both groups showed significant reduction in mean PAI score and lesion size. hs-CRP levels reduced significantly in both groups (p < 0.05), with signi

Miniature Pulpotomy of Symptomatic Mature Permanent Teeth: A Report of Two Cases.

Human dental pulp inflammation can progress to periapical lesion formation and conventional root canal treatment (RCT) has been the traditional method for disease management. This observational study presents two cases of vital pulp therapy in mature molars diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis and associated with apical periodontitis. In these two clinical cases, the involved teeth had deep carious lesions with a history of spontaneous/lingering pain and radiographic examinations revealed the presence of apical radiolucencies. A conservative miniature pulpotomy (MP) using calcium-enriched mixt

8-year follow-up of central giant cell lesion mimicking apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Lesions of nonendodontic origin may mimic apical periodontitis. Central giant cell lesions (CGCLs) are aggressive or nonaggressive benign idiopathic intraosseous lesions of the jaw. This report describes a case of a CGCL in the periapical region of teeth #21-#26 of a 17-year-old female who sought orthodontic care because of a change in the position of tooth #23. METHODS: Clinical examination revealed mild facial asymmetry caused by increased volume in the mental region and cortical bone expansion but no cortical disruption. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined radiolucen

Orofacial findings in chronic granulomatous disease: report of twelve patients and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Chronic granulomatous disease is an extremely rare primary immunodeficiency syndrome that can be associated with various oral complications. This can affect high number of patients. However, data on oral complications is sparse. Here we will review the literature and describe the orofacial findings in 12 patients. FINDINGS: The age range was 5-31 years. Oral findings were variable, and reflected a low level of oral hygiene. They included periodontitis, rampant caries, gingivitis, aphthous-like ulcers, and geographic tongue. One patient had white patches on the buccal mucosa simila

Histologic studies on the extension of the inflammatory infiltrate in human periodontitis.

This study was undertaken to re-examine early and recent morphologic descriptions of gingival and periodontal inflammation based on a study of gingival biopsies and block sections of human jaws. A collection of 350 autopsy and surgically retrieved jaw sections containing multiple teeth and displaying various stages of periodontal inflammation were subjected to routine histologic preparation and analyzed with step serial sections. 105 gingival biopsies, serially sectioned, including 15 clinically normal specimens, were also studied. The results of these investigations suggest that the inflammat

Systemic antibiotics for symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess in adults.

BACKGROUND: Dental pain can have a considerable detrimental effect on an individual's quality of life. Symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess are common causes of dental pain and arise from an inflamed or necrotic dental pulp, or infection of the pulpless root canal system. Clinical guidelines recommend that the first-line treatment for teeth with symptomatic apical periodontitis or an acute apical abscess should be removal of the source of inflammation or infection by local, operative measures, and that systemic antibiotics are currently only recommended for situations wher

Transition to agriculture in South-Eastern Arabia: Insights from oral conditions.

OBJECTIVES: In Southeast (SE) Arabia, agriculture is supposed to expand around 3000 BC, but its tempo and its actual role in populations' subsistence is still debated by archaeologists. Here, we compare dental health conditions of 11 skeletal samples from coastal and inland sites, dated from the Late Neolithic (ca. 4500-3100 BC) to the Early Bronze Age (EBA), conventionally divided into Hafit (ca. 3100-2700 BC) and Umm an-Nar period (ca. 2700-2000 BC). The goal is to assess long-term trends in subsistence patterns and regional variability during the local transition to agriculture. METHODS: S

Multiple external root resorptions in a patient with Stage IV, Grade C periodontitis and autoimmune diseases: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pathological root resorption affects permanent teeth and is usually triggered by infectious-inflammatory stimuli and/or dental trauma. Periodontitis and traumatic occlusion have been reported as possible causative factors of root resorptions, whilst the impact of systemic diseases is less well understood. This case highlights the need for consideration of multiple risk factors, especially when presenting in combination. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 62-year-old South Asian female presented with unstable Stage IV Grade C periodontitis, poor oral hygiene and multiple autoimmune conditions

[Main characteristics of materials used for retrograde filling].

The most important stage in the surgical treatment of chronic apical periodontitis is the creation of a sealed barrier that prevents the penetration of microorganisms outside the root canal. The choice of the most optimal material for retrograde sealing is a process that requires special attention. Many different types of sealing materials used in apical surgery are presented. In this article, we set out information about the most used materials and their properties. Today, preference in choosing a material for retrograde sealing is given to silicate cements, but, given the current limited dat
