OBJECTIVES: The effect of amino-bisphosphonates on osteoblastic lineage and its potential contribution to the pathogenesis of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (BONJ) remain controversial. We assessed the effects of zoledronic acid (ZOL) on bone and vascular cells of the alveolar socket using a mouse model of BONJ.

Ultrastructural examination of optic nerve capillaries in the canine lamina cribrosa revealed many spherical, membrane-bound, electron-dense inclusions that closely resembled Weibel-Palade bodies, in pericytes and endothelial cells of preglaucomatous, early, moderately, and advanced affected Beagles with hereditary primary open-angle glaucoma. A patient with Whipple's disease developed massive and irreversible CNS involvement after a drug-induced intestinal remission. The multifocal brain lesions were apparent grossly with the heaviest concentration being noted in rhinencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon. This patient exhibited progressive neurologic deterioration, although viable organisms could not be identified in the brain at autopsy. Astrocytes, pericytes, and choroid plexus cells attempted to dispose of the organism, in additional to the traditionally implicated microglial and ependymal cell.

Specimens of a cornea, conjunctiva and iris were removed at the time of penetrating keratoplasty in a case of nephropathic cystinosis. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the presence of class II antigens on the stromal keratocytes of the cornea and the vascular endothelial cells, pericytes and fibroblasts of the conjunctiva. In addition, there were thinning and focal breaks in Bowman's membrane. Both of these findings may have contributed to the severe photophobia and blepharospasm seen in patients with longstanding cystinosis.

Hemangiopericytoma is a rare type of neoplasia originating from the Zimmermann pericytes and can arise in numerous sites. As it is difficult to correlate the histologic aspect with the prognosis, it was considered advisable to take account of other factors such as age and tumoral site. Aggressive surgery followed by irradiation therapy is suggested as the most suitable management.
