INTRODUCTION: To describe the incidence and outcomes of lower extremity neuropathies in a series of robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) and robot assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy (RALRC) patients with 9 months follow up. Additionally, we compare this cohort to other published series of lithotomy based surgery and describe strategies for minimizing risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 179 consecutive patients who underwent either RALRP or RALRC at a single institution during a 17 month period. We included all patients who experienc

BACKGROUND: Patients in whom conventional peroneal nerve repair surgery failed to reconstitute useful foot lift need to be evaluated for their suitability to undergo a concomitant tendon transfer procedure or nerve transfers.
OBJECTIVE: To report our first clinical experience with nerve transfers for persistent traumatic peroneal nerve palsy.
METHODS: Between 2007 and 2013, 8 patients were operated on for foot drop after unsuccessful nerve surgery. Six patients without fatty degeneration of the anterior tibial muscle and proximal lesion of the peroneal nerve were oriented for tibial to peron

BACKGROUND: Gait disability affects the daily lives of patients with stroke in both home and community settings. An abnormal foot-ankle position can cause instability on the supporting surface and negatively affect gait. Our research team explored the ability of a portable peroneal nerve-targeting electrical stimulator to improve gait ability by adjusting the foot-ankle position during walking in patients with chronic stroke undergoing home-based rehabilitation.
METHODS: This was a double-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial. Thirty-one patients with chronic stroke and ankle-fo

The main purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of foot drop stimulators (FDS) in individuals with stroke by means of spatio-temporal and step-to-step symmetry, harmonic ratio (HR), parameters obtained from trunk accelerations acquired using a wearable inertial sensor. Thirty-two patients (age: 56.84 ± 9.10 years; 68.8% male) underwent an instrumental gait analysis, performed using a wearable inertial sensor before and a day after the 10-session treatment (PRE and POST sessions). The treatment consisted of 10 sessions of 20 min of walking on a treadmill while using the FDS devi

Tibiofemoral knee dislocations are typically a consequence of high-energy mechanisms, causing significant damage to the soft tissue and osseous structures of the knee. Concomitant neurovascular injuries such as popliteal artery and peroneal nerve injuries are also common and can have significant long-term consequences. The mechanism typically involves a traction injury to the peroneal nerve subsequent to an extreme varus moment applied to the knee. Complete nerve injuries typically hold a worse prognosis than incomplete palsies. Rates of functional recovery in the setting of a complete palsy f

The adult paralytic foot is a common clinical entity. It has numerous neurologic, systemic, and traumatic causes that result in muscle imbalance and foot deformity. A thorough physical examination and diagnostic work-up, as well as an understanding of the relevant functional anatomy, are essential to proper management. Treatment goals include the establishment of a plantigrade foot, elimination of deforming forces, and, when possible, restoration of active motor control.

This case report presents a 28-year-old man with foot drop 48 hours after a grade I inversion ankle sprain. Clinical examination and electrodiagnostic studies showed common peroneal nerve palsy. The patient was managed with conservative treatment and rehabilitation and recovered completely 4 months after the injury. Physicians should be aware of the possibility of delayed peroneal nerve injury after grade I ankle sprain. Function of the peroneal nerve should be evaluated in all patients with inversion ankle sprain as part of initial and follow-up evaluations. Early electrodiagnostic studies ar

INTRODUCTION: Common peroneal nerve palsy is the commonest lower extremity peripheral paresis. The foot drop and inability or difficulty to move the ankle and toes dorsally and inability to perform foot pronation is a debilitating condition for the patient. Tendon transfer is a treatment option often used to restore the foot function after the peroneal palsy in cases when reinervation is not clinically satisfactory.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 14 patients treated in the Trauma department of FNO either for common or deep peroneal nerve paresis, or for isolated lesion of the

Injuries of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) are frequent and associated with poor motor outcomes. So far, the opinion is held, that nerve reconstruction is reasonable and indicated up to 6 months after injury. We describe successful sural nerve interposition grafting in a patient with neuroma-in-continuity formation of the CPN, presenting with foot drop, 13 months after injury. Due to this positive result, we think nerve grafting in neuroma-in-continuity lesions of the CPN should be contemplated in patients with foot drop even more than one year after injury.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is associated with severe microvascular and macrovascular complications with major implications for public health. Diabetic neuropathy is a very problematic complication of diabetes mellitus. It is associated with severe morbidity, mortality, and a huge economic burden. The present study was designed with two aims: 1) to analyze the association of diabetic neuropathy with the glycemic index (levels of fasting blood glucose, random blood glucose, and Hb1Ac) in patients with Type 2 diabetes, and 2) to analyze the association of diabetic neuropathy with time passed

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this work was to follow-up the development of diabetic neuropathy (DN) and its severity in patients with type 1 diabetes over 10 yr. Our intention was also to observe risk factor changes and verify which of them influence the development of neuropathy. The other objective was longitudinal study of electrophysiological parameters, focusing on the early diagnosis of DN.
METHODS: The prospective study comprised of 62 young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) aged 13.9 ± 5.89 yr, with diabetes duration of 5.56 ± 5.11 yr, treated with an intensified insulin

We evaluated the efficacy and robustness of a second generation implantable stimulator for correcting drop foot (DF) in a patient with left-sided hemiplegia over 20 years of functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the common peroneal nerve (CPN). Dorsal flexion and eversion of the affected foot was partially restored by FES of the superficial region of the CPN innervating mostly the tibialis anterior (TA) and partly peroneus longus (PL) and peroneus brevis (PB) muscles. The reasons for implant failure during the long-term follow-up assessment were analyzed and resolving procedures were iden

BACKGROUND: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) is often associated with neuropathic pain (NP), involving developing mechanisms across different nerve fibres. This study aimed to explore the relationship between NP intensity and clinical/neurophysiological measures in symptomatic ATTR V30M (p.V50M)-PN patients.
METHODS: We included 106 symptomatic patients (46 males; mean age 47.5 ± 13.2 years). NP severity was classified using three pain-related items from the Norfolk QOL-DN, generating three groups: no pain, mild pain, and moderate-to-severe pain. Clinical an

We performed clinical and electrophysiological studies in 42 children with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I and II (HMSN I and II) and in 103 members of their families. In 24 families with HMSN I the conduction velocity and latency were markedly changed in the nerves innervating the distal muscles (median, peroneal nerves) as well as proximal muscles (facial, axillary and musculocutaneous nerves). The changes were uniform in all motor and sensory nerves studied in a particular patient. The intensity of changes was similar in members of their families even when the clinical abnorm

INTRODUCTION: Skeletal muscle compartment syndrome (SMCS) and exertional compartment syndrome (ECS) are two distinct conditions. This case report describes a situation in which both conditions resulted from the same triggering events. The importance of this case lies in the fact that the residual neuropathy associated with the SMCS resolved after a single hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) treatment.
CASE REPORT: This report was generated from a retrospective analysis of the patient's combined compartment syndromes, SMCS and ECS, residual functional deficit, and resolution of the latter with HBO₂ treat
