Precipitation and growth of zinc sulfide nanoparticles in the presence of thiol-containing natural organic ligands.

In sulfidic aquatic systems, metal sulfides can control the mobility and bioavailability of trace metal pollutants such as zinc, mercury, and silver. Nanoparticles of ZnS and other metal sulfides are known to exist in oxic and anoxic waters. However, the processes that lead to their persistence in the aquatic environment are relatively unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of dissolved natural organics in stabilizing nanoparticulate ZnS that precipitates under environmentally relevant conditions. Precipitation and growth of ZnS particles were investigated in the p

Emerging persistent micro- and nanopollutants in marine ecosystems: sources, risks on seafood security, and current remediation technology.

This review examines the growing concern over persistent, non-biodegradable micro- and nanopollutants in marine environments, driven largely by industrial activities, particularly manufacturing processes involving micro- and nanoparticles. Global oceans are increasingly burdened by complex mixtures of heavy metals, engineered nanomaterials (ENPs), and micro- to nanoplastics, all of which threaten ecosystem integrity and seafood safety. Heavy metals accumulate in sediments and marine organisms, enabling biomagnification through the food web. ENPs, with their nanoscale dimensions and unique phys

"New" Reactive Nitrogen Chemistry Reshapes the Relationship of Ozone to Its Precursors.

Tropospheric ozone pollution has been a major environmental issue, and mitigation of this persistent problem requires a comprehensive understanding of the sensitivity of ozone to its precursors, i.e., nitrogen oxides (NO x) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Recent studies have proposed several "new" reactive nitrogen chemical processes, including additional sources of nitrous acid, heterogeneous uptake of dinitrogen pentoxide, and production of nitryl chloride. These processes significantly affect the budgets of radicals and NO x and hence the formation of ozone. In present study, we aim

Preparing and characterizing environmentally aged microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent and widely distributed pollutants that have become an emerging environmental problem. When present in the environment, they are increasingly being incorporated into the carbon cycle and thus participate in the Earth's biochemical cycle alongside other pollutants. However, upon entering the environment (as primary or secondary MPs), various environmental factors collectively influence the physical and chemical characteristics of MPs, leading to changes in surface morphology, particle size and microstructure. These alterations can change their physical behavior

Nanopollutants (nZnO) amplify hypoxia-induced cellular stress in a keystone marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) are increasingly utilized in industrial, medical, and personal care products, particularly as the main ingredient in sunscreens, raising concerns about their environmental impact, especially in coastal ecosystems. The Baltic Sea, experiencing severe eutrophication, faces persistent hypoxia due to excessive nutrient runoff and limited water exchange. Simultaneously, coastal pollution from industrial and urban activities introduces nZnO, a highly biotoxic nanopollutant. The combined effects of hypoxia and nZnO contamination may amplify environmental stress, yet th

Distribution and occurrence characteristics of antibiotic resistance genes in China's nearshore waters: A systematic review (2016-2026).

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), as emerging biological pollutants with the capacity for genetic transmission, have been widely detected in China's nearshore aquatic environments and pose potential risks to ecological security and public health. This review systematically synthesizes studies published between 2016 and 2026 on ARGs in China's nearshore waters, with a focus on their occurrence and spatial distribution, source inputs, and mechanisms of transport and dissemination. Overall, ARG abundance generally decreases from estuarine and nearshore waters toward offshore areas, although the

Endocrine Disruptors, Gut Microbiota, and Type 2 Diabetes: Bridging Mechanisms to Probiotic-Based Therapeutic Approaches.

Genetic and lifestyle factors alone cannot explain the rising global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Growing evidence implicates endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in plastics, pesticides, food packaging, industrial products, and contaminated water as significant environmental contributors to metabolic dysfunction. EDCs, including bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and heavy metals, have been associated with insulin resistance, pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairm…

Development and application of a blubber-based detection protocol for phthalate ester metabolites in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Phthalates (PAEs) are high production volume plasticizing chemicals linked to endocrine disruption in mammals. Phthalates are released from the products to which they are added, leading to environmental exposure for humans and wildlife. Recent studies of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) urine have demonstrated prevalent exposure to phthalates. This study developed a protocol for phthalate ester metabolite (mPAE) detection in bottlenose dolphin blubber (~ 200 mg), a matrix that can be sampled remotely, and has been used to assess contaminant exposure (e.g., persistent organic pollutants …

Harnessing invasive weed species for fly ash-polluted site remediation: Comparative assessment of organic contaminant degradation and bacterial shifts using GC-MS and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing.

Phytoremediation of coal fly ash disposal sites is challenging due to the complex mixtures of persistent pollutants in alkaline, nutrient-depleted substrates. A multi-platform evaluation (physicochemical analysis, BCF/TF, GC-MS Van Krevelen type classification, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and functional networks) was conducted to assess two natural colonizers, Cannabis sativa L. and Parthenium hysterophorus L., at the NTPC ash disposal site. Weed colonization reduced pH from 9 (NS) to 7.49 (CS) and 7.08 (PS). The large surface depletion of zinc, iron, and manganese caused by these reductions

Health Impacts of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs): A Comprehensive Review.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are among the persistent organic pollutants characterized by their persistence in the environment, high mobility, and adverse impact not only on the ecosystem but also on human health. The biggest challenges in human biomonitoring are the low concentrations of PFASs in biological matrices and the presence of matrix interferents in samples. The combination of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) as a sample preparation technique appears to be the most suitable solution for achieving the desire…

Confirming sulfluramid (EtFOSA) application as a precursor of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in Brazilian agricultural soils.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a manmade chemical with several industrial applications and also a potential byproduct of many other per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in the environment. Due to the gathered evidence on its environmental persistence, long-range transport, toxicity, and bioaccumulative and biomagnifying properties, PFOS, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), were listed for global restriction under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2009. Nevertheless, Brazil has granted an acceptable purpose exemption for using PFOSF …

Mercury and methylmercury differentially modulate hepatic cytochrome P450 1A1 and 1A2 in vivo and in vitro.

The cytochrome P450 1 A (CYP1A) subfamily enzymes are involved in the metabolic activation of several xenobiotics to toxic metabolites and reactive intermediates, resulting ultimately in carcinogenesis. Mercury and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs), typified by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), are persistent environmental pollutants involved in the modulation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) gene battery, including cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes. We previously investigated the effect of coexposure to either inorganic or organic mercury (Hg+2 and MeHg) with TCDD on CYP1A1 in vi

Human CYP1B1-dependent genotoxicity of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in mammalian cells.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants and human carcinogens. It was reported that rat CYP1A1 and catfish CYP1A can hydroxylate 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) and 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 77), while potential roles of other CYP1 enzymes in the metabolism of dioxin-like (DL) PCBs remain unconfirmed. In this study, three representative DL-PCBs, i.e., PCB 77, PCB 126, and 3,4,4',5-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 81), were investigated on their genotoxicity in Chinese hamster V79-derived cell lines genetically engineered for the expression of human CYP1A1,…
