A Meta-Analysis on Personality Change Among International Students From the USA, European, and Asian Countries Studying Abroad.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis systematically examines personality development during study abroad. It aims to synthesize previously fragmented longitudinal evidence and explain mixed findings by identifying how personality change varies by students' country of origin, duration of stay, and home-host cultural distance. METHOD: This pre-registered meta-analysis synthesized 25 studies, including 40 independent samples and 184 effect sizes (N = 5732) among diverse national and cultural contexts. Effect sizes were analyzed using a two-level random-effects model. RESULTS: Results indicated an over…

Psychopathological Correlates of Dysfunctional Smartphone and Social Media Use: The Role of Personality Disorders in Technological Addiction and Digital Life Balance.

Current technological development has made the Internet and new technologies increasingly present in people's lives, expanding their opportunities but also potentially posing risks for dysfunctional use. This study aims to identify psychopathological factors associated with dysfunctional ICT use, extending the evidence beyond the well-established relationships with mood disorders to include personality disorders (i.e., cluster C in particular). A total of 711 participants (75.70% female; Mage = 28.33 years, SD = 12.30) took part in the data collection. Firstly, the results showed positive corr

Personality traits related to cognitive functioning in patients with functional neurological disorder.

Cognitive symptoms are prevalent in patients with functional neurological disorder (FND). Several studies have suggested that personality traits such as neuroticism may play a pivotal role in the development of FND. FND has also been associated with alexithymia: patients with FND report difficulties in identifying, analyzing, and verbalizing emotions. Whether or not alexithymia and other personality traits are associated with cognitive symptomatology in patients with FND is unknown. In the current study, we explored whether the Big Five personality model factors (neuroticism, extraversion, ope

The AIP model as a theoretical framework for the treatment of personality disorders with EMDR therapy.

Research has shown that the impact of traumatic events and circumstances on individuals is cumulative and potentially has a wide range of harmful consequences, including negative consequences on mental health. One such consequence is the development of a personality disorder, a persistent mental condition characterized by a pronounced pattern of difficulties in impulse control, emotional regulation, cognitive functions, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. A wide array of studies indicates that the personal history of individuals with a personality disorder is often marked by exposure

Structure of psychopathology in adolescents and its association with high-risk personality traits.

The present study examined high-risk personality traits and associations with psychopathology across multiple levels of a hierarchical-dimensional model of psychopathology in a large adolescent, general population sample. Confirmatory factor analyses were run using data from two randomized controlled trials of Australian adolescents (N = 8,654, mean age = 13.01 years, 52% female). A higher-order model - comprised of general psychopathology, fear, distress, alcohol use/harms, and conduct/inattention dimensions - was selected based on model fit, reliability, and replicability. Indirect-effects m

Narcissism and central serotonergic neurotransmission in depression.

OBJECTIVES: Based on previous research, it has been proposed that the development of depressive disorders is related to altered functioning of the serotonergic systems as well as the personality style, including narcissism. However, it is unclear to date how personality style, especially narcissism, depressive disorders and serotonergic activity are related. METHODS: We included 74 patients with a depressive disorder (DP) and 74 healthy controls (HC) in the study. All participants completed the Personality Style and Disorder Inventory (PSDI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI II). Moreove

The Co-Occurrence of Trauma Related Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: AQ Study on a Clinical Sample of Patients Seeking Psychotherapy Treatment.

The nature of the relationship between borderline personality disorder (borderline PD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD remains controversial. In this study we attempted to investigate the association between traumatic events and borderline PD and the co-occurrence of complex PTSD, PTSD and borderline PD. Finally, we tested the association between complex PTSD and PTSD diagnoses and other DSM-5 Section II personality disorders. In a sample of 416 patients, we administered the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) to evaluate the PTSD/complex PTSD diagnoses and the Str

Type D personality, medication adherence and peritonitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients.

The present study attempted to investigate the association among Type D, medication adherence and peritonitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. Type D personality was assessed by the Chinese 14-item Type D Personality Scale (DS14) in CAPD patients. Patients' medication adherence was assessed by the Medication Adherence Report Scale, retrospectively. Of the 385 CAPD patients who were investigated, 137 (35.6%) patients had a Type D personality. The medication adherence was significantly poorer in the Type Ds compared with that of the non-Type Ds (21.5 ± 2.8 vs. 22.5 ±

The effect of childhood trauma and Five-Factor Model personality traits on exposure to adult life events in patients with psychotic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent life events are associated with transition to and outcome in psychosis. Childhood trauma and personality characteristics play a role in proneness to adult life events. However, little is known about the relative contribution and interrelatedness of these characteristics in psychotic disorders. Therefore, we investigated whether Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits and childhood trauma (abuse and neglect) predict adult life events, and whether the effect of childhood trauma on life events is mediated by personality traits. METHOD: One hundred and sixty-three patients

The role of personality in dyadic interaction: A psychophysiological study.

Psychophysiological activity was recorded during development discussions of 44 manager-subordinate pairs to examine the effects of the Big Five personality traits Extraversion and Conscientiousness, and personality similarity during dyadic social interaction. Facial electromyography and frontal electroencephalography (EEG) asymmetry were collected continuously during the 30-min discussions. Different actor and partner effects and Actor×Partner interactions were observed. Matching levels of Extraversion led to higher periocular muscle activity, indicating positive valence emotional expressions.

Allostatic load, personality traits, and cancer risk: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative stress exposure is extensively involved in carcinogenesis. However, cancer risk associated with allostatic load (AL), a valid measure of chronic stress, has not been comprehensively evaluated in large cohorts, and the combined effect of AL and personality trait on cancer risk remains unknown. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted based on 245,683 participants from the UK Biobank, with a median follow-up of 13.5 years. The AL score was calculated based on 11 biomarkers. Personality traits were constructed and categorized into two clusters. Multivariable Co

Compassionately reactive: Personality profiles of speech-language pathologists and their professional trajectories.

Personality traits significantly influence health career trajectories, clinical performance, and burnout vulnerability. However, limited research has explored personality traits among speech-language pathologists (SLP), particularly across professional development stages. This study compared certified SLPs, Communication Disorders students, and a comparison group from the general population, examining differences in personality dimensions and the relationship between clinical experience and personality among SLPs. A total of 359 participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, assessing N

[How can subjects be objectified? - or a critical overwiev of the concept of personality disorders appearing in the new classificational systems].

The development of the new diagnostic systems (DSM-5; ICD-11) once again generated an interesting discussion around the personality disorders. In this paper we first review the historical traditions, than we examine and compare the new diagnostic suggestions appearing in DSM-5 and ICD-11. Our main goal is to help with the under standing of the new dimensional models and to clarify the questions that arose during the creation of these models. Although the DSM-5 keeps the classic categorical system, it also proposes a hybrid dimensional-categorical diagnostic alternative. Within the hybrid model

Linking genetic foundations of sleep disturbances to personality traits: a study of mid-life twins.

Risk of sleep disturbances depends on individuals' personality, and a large body of evidence indicates that individuals prone to neuroticism, impulsivity, and (low) extraversion are more likely to experience them. Origins of these associations are unclear, but common genetic background may play an important role. Participants included 405 twin pairs (mean age of 54 years; 59% female) from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) who reported on their personality traits (broad and specific), as well as sleep disturbances (problems with falling asleep, staying asle

Proximal Processes, Temperament, and Pathological Narcissism: An Empirical Exploration from the Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: It is argued that all personality pathology represents the final emergent product of a complex interaction of underlying neurobehavioral systems, which are reflected in personality factors, in conjunction with environmental inputs. Neurobehavioral systems manifest themselves in dispositional temperament and personality processes. Environmental inputs include, obviously, interpersonal relationships (e.g., parenting, social, and mentoring relations) as well as other factors such as abuse, neglect, and/or environmental insults (e.g., economic hardship, deprivation). Memory bias and personality characteristics in college students with social anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Some individuals are more susceptible to recalling false information about events that never happened in their life. Nevertheless, there are several factors, such as personality characteristics, that appear to be related to memory performance. Social anxiety also provokes memory deficits for events that happen to other people, because these individuals tend to focus on their own inner selves rather than on external signs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the personality characteristics of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) on memory performance. METHODS: I

Trait Sensitivity, Anxiety, and Personality Are Predictive of Central Sensitization Symptoms in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity-related trait characteristics involving physical and emotional sensitivities and high trait anxiety personality types have been observed in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). High trait sensitivity to sensory stimulation combined with interpretation biases based on personality type may contribute to the development of central sensitization (CS) symptoms. To date, there is limited research that has considered both sensitivity levels and personality type in NSCLBP with CS. The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) relationships between tra

The role of parental psychopathology and personality in adolescent non-suicidal self-injury.

Adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a significant risk factor for suicidal behavior, is strongly associated with adolescent psychopathology and personality traits, particularly those characterized by poor self-regulation. Some parental psychopathology and personality traits have also been identified as risk factors for adolescent NSSI, but specific parental characteristics and mechanisms involved in this association have not been systematically examined. The current study comprehensively investigated the contribution of parental psychopathology and personality to adolescent NSSI using
