OBJECTIVE: Although there is a rich literature showing that addictive disorders are important risk factors for suicide, corresponding studies on suicidal behavior are rare. This study was aimed to evaluate the impact of alcohol intoxication on suicidal behavior.
METHODS: Prospective study. All patients admitted to a psychiatric department providing the psychiatric services for a district of Berlin (250,000 inhabitants) within 15 month.
RESULTS: Within this period 184 persons were admitted after showing suicidal behaviour (n = 227 admissions). 54.3 % of them were alcohol intoxicated (BAC > 1

Background and Objectives: High rates of infection with Toxoplasma gondii were found in psychiatric patients globally. In this study, we assessed for the first time the prevalence of T. gondii infection in psychiatric patients and healthy individuals with no known psychiatric disorders in Western Romania. Materials and Methods: The presence of specific IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies was evaluated in 308 psychiatric patients and 296 control subjects using a chemiluminescence assay. Results: Overall, the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies was higher in psychiatric patients (67.86%; 209/308), compar

BACKGROUND: Many apparently disparate risk factors have been implicated as causes of eating disorders. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that 2 broad classes of risk factors exist for bulimia nervosa: those that increase the risk for development of a psychiatric disorder in general and those that increase the risk of dieting. It was predicted that the latter are especially common among persons with bulimia nervosa.
METHODS: A case-control design was used involving 2 integrated comparisons. First, 102 subjects with bulimia nervosa were compared with 204 healthy control subjects wi

We examined the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders in cigarette smokers and nonsmokers in a non-patient sample. First-degree relatives of psychiatric patients (n = 697) and normal controls (n = 360) were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. Using these interviews we diagnosed the major mental (Axis I) disorders and personality (Axis II) disorders. A cigarette smoker was defined as someone who smoked daily for a month or more at some time in their lives. We found that smokers more frequently had a lifetime h

Violence in the workplace is sometimes a manifestation of an untreated psychiatric disorder. Paranoid personality disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, and delusional (paranoid) disorder are three psychiatric syndromes in which paranoid ideation is a prominent feature. While the vast majority of people with these conditions are not violent, paranoid workers can exhibit violent behavior as a reaction to beliefs that co-workers or supervisors are threatening or persecuting them. Three cases are described to illustrate the clinical presentation of these disorders and their management in an occupation

BACKGROUND: A history of sexual abuse has been widely reported in patients with eating disorders. However, the association does not appear to be specific, because a high rate of such abuse has also been found in other psychiatric patients.
METHOD: A standardised interview method was used to elicit details of sexual abuse in a psychiatrically normal control group and samples of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or depression.
RESULTS: An equally high rate of abuse was found in all three clinical samples. Among the patients with anorexia nervosa the presence of bulimic episodes

Very few studies have prospective information, especially regarding males, on the prediction of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in adulthood from psychiatric disorders in childhood. Certain childhood disorders, however, have notably similar features in common with BPD. In particular, the affective dysfunction, hostility and interpersonal conflict of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and the impulsivity of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in particular may be indicative of an early developmental path towards BPD. The present study uses longitudinal data from a clinical sa

OBJECTIVE: Although previous research has suggested that racial disparities exist in the administration of forced medication (FM) in psychiatric inpatients, data remain scarce regarding other contributing variables. Therefore, this study examined sociodemographic and clinical variables associated with FM administration in psychiatric inpatients.
METHODS: Electronic medical records from 57,615 patients admitted to an academic psychiatric hospital between 2010 and 2018 were reviewed to identify patients who received FM. These records indicated that FM petitions were requested and approved for ∼

Just as the awareness of incest and childhood sexual abuse has grown in recent years, so too has knowledge of sexual exploitation of patients by psychotherapists and other mental health professionals. Almost no one, however, has discussed the prevalence of this problem in the hospital setting. The authors were members of a study group that thoroughly reviewed reported incidents in their own institution, leading to the recommendation that education is the best preventive measure currently available. The authors discuss fundamental issues involved in such a study, summarize profiles of patients

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine whether a history of physical or sexual abuse is more common in children with borderline personality disorder than in other children evaluated in the same outpatient psychiatric clinic.
METHOD: The authors contrasted rates of abuse in 44 children diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and in 100 comparison children.
RESULTS: The borderline personality disorder group had a significantly greater prevalence of physical and combined physical/sexual abuse. Sexual abuse rates alone did not differ significantly between groups.
CONCLUSION

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative, autosomal dominant disease that manifests with a triad of symptom clusters including movement disorder, cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms. We present a patient with HD who, prior to developing neurological signs and symptoms, had been exposed to war trauma and had developed posttraumatic stress disorder. Fifteen years later he manifested with dysarthria, difficulties with swallowing and involuntary movement. What brought him to psychiatrist was a heteroanamnestically noticed change in personality with irritable mood, impulsivity, ag

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM; 5th ed.) reassignment of gambling disorder as an addictive disorder alongside the substance-related addictive disorders encourages research into their shared etiologies. The aims of this study were to examine: (a) the associations of Big Five personality dimensions with alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, and gambling disorders, (b) the comorbidity between these disorders, (c) the extent to which common personality underpinnings explain comorbidity, (d) whether results differed for men and women, and (e) the magnitude of personality diff

IMPORTANCE: The large contribution of psychiatric disorders to premature death and persistent disability among young people means that earlier identification and enhanced long-term care for those who are most at risk of developing life-threatening or chronic disorders is critical. Clinical staging as an adjunct to diagnosis to address emerging psychiatric disorders has been proposed for young people presenting for care; however, the longer-term utility of this system has not been established.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the rates of transition from earlier to later stages of anxiety, mood, psych

This report highlights various considerations regarding the potential effects of concurrent psychiatric conditions and a history of abuse in patient volunteers for clinical trials in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Even though many studies have used psychological rating scales to assess personality and psychological traits of patients with IBS, the prevalence of the different psychiatric diagnoses (i.e., categorical assessment) in patients with IBS has only recently been assessed systematically. Recent studies of treatment-seeking patients have indicated that the majority of individuals (50% t

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering skin disease that takes a profound physical and mental toll on those affected. The aim of the study was to investigate the bidirectional association between BP and all bullous disorders (ABD) with a broad array of psychiatric disorders, exploring the influence of prescribed medications.
METHODS: This nationwide, register-based cohort study encompassed 6,470,450 individuals born in Denmark and alive from 1994 to 2016. The hazard ratios (HRs) of a subsequent psychiatric disorder in patients with BP/ABD and the reverse exposure and

The relationship between premenstrual affective syndrome and psychiatric disorder was investigated, using 81 women presenting to a Neurology Clinic with functional headache. Premenstrual affective syndrome was significantly associated with a history of depressive syndrome in the population studied. Patients judged to have a non-affective psychiatric disorder reported no greater frequency of definite or probable premenstrual affective syndrome than patients considered psychiatrically normal. The premenstrual occurrence or exacerbation of affective symptoms has been noted. This symptom exacerbat

So far, there is increasing evidence of the active role of molecular biology in the psychiatric nosology as well as in the identification of psychiatric fenotypes. In this respect, the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has been involved in the etiopathogeny of multiple psychiatry conditions, such as affective disorder, schizophrenia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, alcoholism, eating disorder and personality disorder. The 5-HT2 receptor family includes the subtype 5-HT2A, a G protein coupled receptor whose activation leads to the stimulation of the enzyme phospholipase C and to

Much of the data reported here regarding American Indian (AI) people has originated from specific areas with particular peoples. Thus, one must be cautious in applying information from one tribe to the hundreds of tribes living across the United States. As with any people, psychiatric disorder may be a pre-existing rationale for using alcohol. Or alternatively, alcohol may lead to various psychiatric disorders, such as organic mental conditions, posttraumatic stress disorder, or other conditions. A third alternative is that both alcoholism and other psychiatric disorder merely happen to affect
