The plasma cortisol levels of 108 children aged 1-16 years with various Hb genotypes (AA, AS and SS) were measured. The mean plasma cortisol levels of both the AS and SS groups (during steady state) fell within the normal range but the mean of the SS group is significantly lower than the AA group. In fact, 9 of the sickle cell children had plasma cortisol levels below the normal range while no child in the HbAS and HbAA groups had plasma cortisol below the normal range. Eviscerated rat models with a functional liver in which the kidneys or pancreas could be left in situ or removed were used. We found that removal of the gastrointestinal tract leaving the liver and kidneys intact resulted in a significant elevation above normal of the plasma cholesterol. It is known that hypertriglyceridemia is associated with the elevation of plasma apolipoprotein CII (apoCII). In an attempt to look at the relationship between the two, the present study was conducted. We examined 30 patients with hypertriglyceridemia (TG, 210 to 9,127 mg/dL) and ten normolipidemic controls. Platelets contain three types of secretory organelles: the dense granules, the alpha granules, and the lysosomes. Most of the proteins secreted from platelets are stored in the alpha granules, whereas the dense granules contain substances such as adenine nucleotides, serotonin, Ca++, and inorganic pyrophosphate types as well as a heparatinase. The relation between performance on driving-related tasks and plasma levels of diphenhydramine was studied in eight male volunteers over 24 hours following oral administration. DPH plasma concentrations rose to peak levels in 1.5-2.5 hours varying with dose, declining to a nearly constant level by 12-24 hours. A three-part study to determine the reasons for fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) transfusions at hospitals in southeastern Wisconsin was conducted. During a 1-month period, hospital transfusion services reported that patients undergoing open-heart surgery received 42 percent, medical patients 26 percent, noncardiac surgery patients 23 percent, neonatal patients 1 percent, and other patients 7 percent of the FFP transfused. Plasma fibronectin was determined by laser nephelometric immunoassay in two populations: (a) healthy subjects separated into three age groups (16-29 yr, 30-50 yr and over 50 yr) and, (b) patients with various hemopathic diseases without any infection or any therapy. Results showed that fibronectin levels in a healthy population were strongly influenced by age. An increase of human plasma fibronectin was shown to occur with age. Plasma fibronectin levels in 66 medical ICU (MICU) patients were measured daily. It has been suggested that elevated luteal phase prolactin (PRL) levels may have an important role in causing some of the symptoms of the premenstrual tension syndrome (PMTS). Thirty-seven women suffering from severe premenstrual dysphoria were selected for this study. Single morning and afternoon serum PRL evaluations were performed during the follicular (day 9) and late luteal (day 26) phases of the menstrual cycle.
