Relationships, resources, and political empowerment: community violence intervention strategies that contest the logics of policing and incarceration.

Community violence-defined as unsanctioned violence between unrelated individuals in public places-has devastating physical, psychological, and emotional consequences on individuals, families, and communities. Immense investments in policing and incarceration in the United States have neither prevented community violence nor systemically served those who have been impacted by it, instead often inflicting further harm. However, the logics that uphold policing and incarceration as suitable or preventative responses to community violence are deeply ingrained in societal discourse, limiting our ab

What makes people grow? Love and hope.

BACKGROUND: Hope and love are popular themes of literature and art in many human societies. The human physiology of love and hope is less well understood. This review presents evidence that the lack of love and/or hope delays growth disturbs development and maturation and even kills. MAIN BODY: Love and hope intersect in promoting healthy human development. Love provides a sense of security and attachment, which are necessary for healthy physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Hope provides a sense of optimism and resilience in the face of adversity. Loving relationships can foster a

Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Future of Psychiatric Research into American Gun Violence.

This article outlines a four-part strategy for future research in mental health and complementary disciplines that will broaden understanding of mass shootings and multi-victim gun homicides. First, researchers must abandon the starting assumption that acts of mass violence are driven primarily by diagnosable psychopathology in isolated "lone wolf" individuals. The destructive motivations must be situated, instead, within larger social structures and cultural scripts. Second, mental health professionals and scholars must carefully scrutinize any apparent correlation of violence with mental ill

[Health policies, a transdisciplinary field of study].

Nowadays, proposing policies or recommendations regarding intervention requires recognizing that our health policies aim to resolve health conditions caused by extreme poverty and inequity in different styles and living conditions. It is necessary to unveil the interests of actors closer to efficiency than to health equity, in scenarios of inequality that are made evident through gradients in health among disadvantaged populations of our country. Health policy analyzes require integrating measurement, description and political participation with recognition policies in a health context, genera

Sub-Saharan Africa and the health MDGs: the need to move beyond the "quick impact" model.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were defined in 2001, making poverty the central focus of the global political agenda. In response to MDG targets for health, new funding instruments called Global Health Initiatives were set up to target specific diseases, with an emphasis on "quick win" interventions, in order to show improvements by 2015. In 2005 the UN Millennium Project defined quick wins as simple, proven interventions with "very high potential short-term impact that can be immediately implemented", in contrast to "other interventions which are more complicated and will take a deca

Research training needs in Peruvian national TB/HIV programs.

BACKGROUND: There are few published reports of research training needs assessments and research training programs. In an effort to expand this nascent field of study and to bridge the gap between research and practice, we sought to systematically assess the research training needs of health care professionals working at Peruvian governmental institutions leading HIV and tuberculosis (TB) control and among senior stakeholders in the field. METHODS: Six institutional workshops were conducted with the participation of 161 mid-level health professionals from agencies involved in national HIV and

Canine vaccination--providing broader benefits for disease control.

This paper reviews the broader benefits of canine vaccination to human and animal health and welfare with an emphasis on the impacts of mass dog vaccination against rabies in countries of the less-developed world. Domestic dogs are the source of infection for the vast majority (>95%) of cases of human rabies worldwide, and dogs remain the principal reservoir throughout Africa and Asia. Canine vaccination against rabies has been shown to dramatically reduce the number of cases in dogs, the incidence of human animal-bite injuries (and hence the demand for costly post-exposure prophylaxis) and th

Needs assessment for health care management education in Russia.

INTRODUCTION: For more than 70 years, health care management in the Soviet Union reflected a centralized directive style familiar to the Soviet political system. Market-oriented reform in post-Soviet Russia is pushing practicing physicians and physician-executives to acquire new information and skills regarding health care management. To assist with health care management in Russia, we analyzed health care providers' educational needs, as they perceive them. METHODS: A total of 4, 367 questionnaires were sent to practicing physicians and physician-executives in 3 regions of the Russian Federa

The decrease in infectious diseases preventable by immunisation and the absence of complications caused by these diseases leads to an increased awareness of vaccine-associated adverse events. The analysis of a survey of the vaccine injury compensation data from the German Bundesländer shows the decrease in accepted and demanded compensation from 1991 to 1999. From 1976 to 1990 1139 of 4569 demands were accepted, whereas from 1991 to 1999, acceptance of only 389 of 2543 demands was reported. In all, 38% of the accepted compensations refer to the smallpox vaccine which is not longer recommended

Health in the central and eastern countries of the WHO European Region: an overview.

The enormous social, political and economic changes that began in the CCEE/NIS in the late 1980s included the revelation and public discussion of a widening health gap between these countries and the other Member States of the European Region. The continuing economic problems and their effects on health increase the urgency of the need for assistance from the international community. Diverging trends in life expectancy became evident in the mid-1970s, and the gap continued to widen in the 1980s for all major causes of death, particularly cardiovascular diseases. The situation is worse in the N

World Health Organization (WHO)'s vision for a leukemia-free Africa: opportunities and challenges- a narrative review.

Leukemia remains a significant contributor to cancer-related morbidity and mortality across Africa, particularly among children. Limited diagnostic capacity, late-stage presentation, inadequate treatment infrastructure, and financial barriers continue to impede early detection and curative outcomes. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) has outlined a strategic vision under the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC), aiming to achieve at least 60% survival for children with the most common cancers, including leukemia, by 2030. This narrative review explores the alignment betw

Navigating distrust and competing priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from Florida to strengthen cooperation.

INTRODUCTION: Stopping an infectious disease outbreak relies on a coordinated set of actions across public and private institutions and the wider public. However, cooperation with public health recommendations was notably hindered during the pandemic by widespread distrust in science and government and the notion that public health competed with other priorities. This study aims to examine the factors driving distrust and competing priorities in Florida, and potential pathways to overcome these issues. METHODS: We conducted an additional analyses of qualitative data from our original study in

An evaluation of the cannabinoid content of the liquid and thermal degradation analysis of cannabis-labeled vape liquids.

Cannabidiol (CBD) vape pen usage has been on the rise given the changing political and scientific climate as well as the promotion of these delivery systems as a more accessible and lower-risk option for consumers. Despite being marketed as a safer way to use cannabis, CBD vape liquids are sold without restrictions or meticulous quality control procedures such as toxicological and clinical assessment, standards for product preservation, or investigative degradation analyses. Nine CBD-labeled vape liquid samples purchased and manufactured in the United States were evaluated and assessed for can

COVID-19 Requires Innovation, Regulation and Rigor: Amaylid Arteaga-García MD MS Director, National Clinical Trials Coordinating Center (CENCEC).

The effects and implications of COVID-19 are global, comprehensive and long-term. The pandemic has exposed inequities, the fragility of economic and political systems, and in many cases, skewed priorities. Population health, not to mention planetary health, is suffering as a result. Nevertheless, the global health crisis in which we are embroiled has provided opportunities for effective collaboration, scientific innovation and real dialog around health and equity. Dr Amaylid Arteaga-García, director of Cuba's National Clinical Trials Coordinating Center (CENCEC), emphasized these opportunities…

"All the problems in the community are multifaceted and related to each other": Inuit concerns in an era of climate change.

OBJECTIVE: Human dimensions of climate change research in the Arctic often proposes ways for local communities to adapt to changes to their environment, foregrounding problems posed by climate change while treating social, political, and economic factors as background conditions. We explore the relevance of this research paradigm for Inuit by examining how Inuit from Kangiqsujuaq present and discuss the major issues facing their community. METHODS: We thematically code and analyze the responses of 107 Inuit to three free-response questions about the problems facing their community and the bes

Inactivation of SAM-methyltransferase is the mechanism of attenuation of a historic louse borne typhus vaccine strain.

Louse borne typhus (also called epidemic typhus) was one of man's major scourges, and epidemics of the disease can be reignited when social, economic, or political systems are disrupted. The fear of a bioterrorist attack using the etiologic agent of typhus, Rickettsia prowazekii, was a reality. An attenuated typhus vaccine, R. prowazekii Madrid E strain, was observed to revert to virulence as demonstrated by isolation of the virulent revertant Evir strain from animals which were inoculated with Madrid E strain. The mechanism of the mutation in R. prowazekii that affects the virulence of the va…
