A member of the maize isopentenyl transferase gene family, Zea mays isopentenyl transferase 2 (ZmIPT2), encodes a cytokinin biosynthetic enzyme expressed during kernel development. Cytokinin biosynthesis in maize.

Cytokinins (CKs) are plant hormones that regulate a large number of processes associated with plant growth and development such as induction … ting a major role in CK biosynthesis for kernel development. We demonstrate that at 8-10 days after pollination (DAP) the endosperm and especially the basal transfer cell layer (BETL) is a major site of ZmIPT2 expression, and that this expression persists in the BETL and the developing embryo into later kernel development stages. We show that ectopic expressi …

Pistil Mating Type and Morphology Are Mediated by the Brassinosteroid Inactivating Activity of the S-Locus Gene BAHD in Heterostylous Turnera Species.

Heterostyly is a breeding system that promotes outbreeding through a combination of morphological and physiological floral traits. In Turnera these traits are governed by a single, hemizygous S-locus containing just three genes. We report that the S-locus gene, BAHD, is mutated and encodes a severely truncated protein in a self-compatible long homostyle species. Further, a self-compatible long homostyle mutant possesses a T. krapovickasii BAHD allele with a point mutation in a highly conserved domain of BAHD acyl transferases. Wild type and mutant TkBAHD alleles were expressed in Arabidop

The role of D3-type cyclins is related to cytokinin and the bHLH transcription factor SPATULA in Arabidopsis gynoecium development.

We studied the D3-type cyclin function during gynoecium development in Arabidopsis and how they are related to the hormone cytokinin and the transcription factor SPATULA. Growth throughout the life of plants is sustained by cell division and differentiation processes in meristematic tissues. In Arabidopsis, gynoecium development implies a multiphasic process where the tissues required for pollination, fertilization, and seed development form. The Carpel Margin Meristem (CMM) is a mass of undifferentiated cells that gives rise to the gynoecium internal tissues, such as septum, ovules, placenta,…

Contrasting physiological-biochemical responses and elemental homeostasis in Pinus sylvestris families exposed to As, Cd and Pb.

Contamination with As, Cd and Pb can limit tree establishment on degraded substrates, but family-level variation in Scots pine responses remains poorly resolved. This study evaluated three open-pollinated maternal half-sib families of Pinus sylvestris L. under controlled hydroponic exposure to As, Cd and Pb. Growth, photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, phenolic and flavonoid contents, malondialdehyde, antioxidant enzyme activities, elemental composition and metal(loid) accumulation indices were analysed, with PCA and Random Forest used as exploratory integrative tools. Plant species with differing flowering periods tend to co-occur more in patchy vegetation of a semi-arid environment.

Stressful environments can lead to patchy vegetation patterns, bringing plants into close spatial proximity, which may intensify plant-plant interactions. These interactions are influenced by functional variation among co-occurring species, and increased variation can reduce niche overlap. One such trait, phenology, has been shown to influence both competitive and facilitative interactions. Phenological differences may reduce competition for resources and enhance facilitation between neighbouring plants during high-demand periods (e.g. flowering). We therefore hypothesized that species with mo

Probiotic Characterization of Honey Bee-Associated Lactic Acid Bacteria and Their Impact on Colony Growth.

Honey bee-associated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) represent promising probiotic candidates due to their ecological adaptation to sugar-rich niches and the potential to enhance host resilience. This study aimed to evaluate their probiotic attributes of LAB strains isolated and characterized from honey bee environment both in vitro and in vivo. Four isolates namely Apilactobacillus apinorum ACIP 01, A. kunkeei ACIH 04, Fructobacillus fructosus ACIG 04, and Secundilactobacillus kimchicus ACIG 01 were assessed for functional properties. Biofilm assays revealed strain and sugar-dependent adherence, w

In-field pollen consumption by orchard predatory mites detected by metabarcoded molecular gut content analysis.

DNA metabarcoding has become a relatively common tool for studying consumption of plants by arthropod herbivores and identifying pollen collected by pollinating insects. However, studies using molecular gut content analysis to detect pollen-feeding in generalist predators are exceedingly rare. Pollen-feeding is known to be important to the nutritional ecology of many generalist predators and is particularly well studied in phytoseiid mites. In apples, generalist phytoseiids such as Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and the stigmaeid predator, Zetzellia mali (Ewing)

Tropilaelaps mercedesae: an emerging global threat to apiculture - a comprehensive review.

Honey bees (Apis spp.) are key pollinators in agricultural and natural ecosystems; however, their populations are declining due to multiple interacting stressors and their synergistic effects, including parasitic mites. While Varroa destructor is widely recognized as the primary global driver of colony losses, mites of the genus Tropilaelaps, particularly Tropilaelaps mercedesae, are emerging as a serious and still underestimated threat. Native to Asia and naturally associated with wild hosts such as Apis dorsata, T. mercedesae has successfully transitioned to managed Apis mellifera colonies a

Acoustic-Based Queen Bee Status Recognition: A Transfer Learning Approach Refinement.

Honeybees are indispensable pollinators for agricultural ecosystems, and a colony's stability and reproductive capacity depend critically on the presence of a healthy queen. Acoustic monitoring has emerged as a promising non-invasive, lighting-independent approach for long-term colony observation. However, existing studies have largely been confined to single-apiary datasets or merged datasets from multiple similar apiaries for model training. Moreover, model evaluation has relied primarily on overall performance metrics, with insufficient attention to cross-region generalization and the detec

Developmental exposure to amitraz impairs reproductive development and metabolic homeostasis in honey bee (Apis mellifera) queens.

Chemicals used within managed pollinator systems can become developmental stressors for non-target organisms, yet their effects on reproductively specialized individuals remain insufficiently understood. Here, we examined the developmental ecotoxicity of the in-hive acaricide amitraz in honey bee (Apis mellifera) queens by exposing fourth-instar larvae to amitraz in acute-toxicity and sublethal-exposure assays and assessing responses from organismal to metabolic levels. The 72-h LD50 of amitraz was 4.428 μg/queen. Residue-informed sub-LD50 exposure (0.01-1 μg/queen) impaired queen development,
