Comparing the incidence of hypospadias across the United States: A contemporary analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is a common congenital malformation occurring in up to 80 in 10,00 live male births, with emerging evidence associating exogenous environmental exposures with increased disease incidence. Military personnel are at particularly higher risk for such exposures and indeed, the rate of hypospadias in infant males born to United States military servicewomen deployed during the Gulf War has been reported to be more than 5 times greater compared to undeployed female military personnel. OBJECTIVE: To characterize contemporary trends in hypospadias incidence in the general pop

Impact of Targeted Agents on Survival of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Patients Fit for Fludarabine, Cyclophosphamide, and Rituximab (FCR) Relative to Age- and Sex-Matched Population.

To assess the impact of first-line treatment with targeted agents (TAs) or fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab (FCR)-based chemo-immunotherapy (CIT) on overall survival (OS) compared to age- and sex-matched individuals in the general population, we conducted an aggregated analysis of phase 3 clinical trials, including the two FLAIR sub-studies, ECOG1912, and CLL13 trials. The restricted mean survival time (RMST), an alternative measure in outcome analyses capturing OS changes over the entire history of the disease, was used to minimize biases associated with the short follow-up time o

Comparison of pooled cohort equation and PREVENT™ risk calculator for statin treatment allocation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Effective hypercholesterolemia management is linked to lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The 2018 AHA/ACC guidelines recommended using the Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE) for lipid management, but these may overestimate risk and be less accurate for certain racial groups. The AHA's new PREVENT equation, which omits race and includes cardiometabolic factors, aims to provide a more accurate risk assessment for a diverse population. However, it has not yet been applied to a nationally representative US population, and implementation guidelines are still lacking. Our

Plasma trans-Fatty Acid Concentrations Continue to Be Associated with Serum Lipid and Lipoprotein Concentrations among US Adults after Reductions in trans-Fatty Acid Intake.

Background: High intakes of trans-fatty acids (TFAs), especially industrially produced TFAs, can lead to unfavorable lipid and lipoprotein concentrations and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown how this relation might change in a population after significant reductions in TFA intake. Objective: This study, which used a new analytical method for measuring plasma TFA concentrations, clarified the association between plasma TFA and serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations before and after the US FDA enacted TFA food-labeling regulations in 2006.Methods: Data were selected

Clinical characteristics and management of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis II in the United States enrolled in the Hunter Outcome Survey.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) was added to the list of disorders recommended for inclusion in newborn screening panels in the USA; this is expected to substantially facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment and improve patient outcomes. An analysis was conducted in US patients enrolled in the Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS) registry, to support the need for an updated understanding of MPS II and its management in the US population at this important juncture. RESULTS: The US cohort comprised 326 patients with MPS II (median ages at symptom onset and at diagnosis of 1.5 ye

Women's Preferences for Home-Based Self-Sampling or Clinic-Based Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening.

IMPORTANCE: While home-based self-sampling for cervical cancer screening is an evidence-based strategy proven to increase screening access and uptake, it is not currently recommended in the US despite recent Food and Drug Administration approval of the first at-home self-sampling device. Little nationally representative research has examined preference for and drivers of home-based self-sampling over clinic-based testing (the standard of care). OBJECTIVE: To assess women's perspectives about, reasons for considering, and factors associated with preferring at-home self-sampling for cervical ca

Association of Prepregnancy Cardiometabolic Health With Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Among Historically Underrepresented Groups in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Prepregnancy diabetes and obesity are associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs). However, the proportion of cases of HDP in the population explained by diabetes and obesity (population attributable fraction), especially among American Indian and Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, is not well characterized. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data on individuals with a live singleton birth from the US National Vital Statistics System between 2016 and 2019. We used adjusted logistic regression to estimate the pr

Association between blood selenium level and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease among naturally menopausal women: A cross-sectional study.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing health burden worldwide. The association between blood selenium (Se) and NAFLD in naturally menopausal women remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of blood Se levels with the prevalence of NAFLD, hepatic steatosis, and liver fibrosis in the US naturally menopausal women population. This study analyzed the dataset from the 2017 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, including 595 naturally menopausal women. Weighted logistic regression models were used to evaluate the cross-sectional association bet

Trends in alcohol-associated liver disease mortality rates in American Indians and Alaskan Natives.

INTRODUCTION: A leading cause of death among non-Hispanic American Indians or Alaskan Natives (AI/ANs), apart from cardiovascular disease and unintentional injuries, is chronic liver disease (CLD). This study analyzed recent trends in AI/AN ALD mortality, given their increased incidence of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and high burden of CLD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER). Geographic, age and sex-based temporal mortality trends of ALD deaths were analyzed among

Prevalence of Tobacco and Poly-Tobacco Use as a Function of Sexual Orientation Identity and Sex.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has characterized poly-tobacco use (ie, use of at least two nicotine/tobacco products) among adults with sexual minoritized (SM) identities (ie, lesbian, gay, and bisexual). Additional work is needed to examine disparities in use by sexual orientation identity and determine whether these disparities differ by sex. We aimed to examine the prevalence of tobacco product use and poly-tobacco use by sexual orientation identity and sex among a nationally representative sample of US adults. AIMS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from 32 352 adult respondents (34.9% 18-24 ye

Social Representations of Urinary Incontinence in Caregivers and General Population: A Focus Group Study.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a major public health problem. Although trivialized, it affects nearly 9% of the world's population and its prevalence increases with age. It affects many people living in nursing homes. In the literature, there is a lot of information on its symptoms, risk factors and therapeutic approaches, but its social representations are rarely studied. The objective of this qualitative focus-group study is to understand the social representations of urinary incontinence of caregivers of institutionalized elderly people, but also of the general population. Seven focus groups
