Sexual health outcomes after colorectal cancer diagnosis in females: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) affects a growing number of females. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of CRC on sexual health outcomes among females, while controlling for age. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using administrative health data from the province of British Columbia (BC) including linked health visits and cancer registry from 1985 to 2017. The cohort included females with CRC (n = 25 402; mean age [SD]: 69.0 [13.1]) and matched controls without CRC (n = 254 020; 69.0 [13.1]) in a 1:10 ratio by age, further stratified by age groups (≤39 years and ≥40 years). Multi

Health outcomes after myocardial infarction: A population study of 56 million people in England.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of a range of health outcomes following myocardial infarction (MI) is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the long-term risk of major health outcomes following MI and generate sociodemographic stratified risk charts in order to inform care recommendations in the post-MI period and underpin shared decision making. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This nationwide cohort study includes all individuals aged ≥18 years admitted to one of 229 National Health Service (NHS) Trusts in England between 1 January 2008 and 31 January 2017 (final follow-up 27 March 2017). Social media use and mental health indicators among US adolescents: A population-based study.

Social media use among young people has raised concerns about its potential impact on mental health. However, research is limited regarding whether certain subgroups may be differently affected. This study uses data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a nationally representative sample of middle and high school students aged approximately 11-18 years (n = 23,366). Mental health conditions were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, and social media use was categorized by frequency levels. We employed multinomial logistic regression and a finite mixture Poisson model to exp

Macrocytic anemia, kidney dysfunction, and mortality in general population: Japan specific health checkup study.

Anemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD), which worsen bidirectionally, are associated with mortality in older adults. This study aimed to examine the association between CKD and the type of anemia and its impact on mortality in the general population. Data from a nationwide database of 203,280 individuals who participated in the annual "Specific Health Check and Guidance in Japan" evaluation between 2008 and 2011 were used. Over a follow-up period of 4 years, 2,819 all-cause, 1,595 cancer-related, 523 cardiovascular, and 128 infectious disease deaths were recorded. Macrocytic anemia was detect

Population Iron Status in Canada: Results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey 2012-2019.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, population iron status estimates are dated (2009-2011) and did not consider the presence of inflammation. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to update iron status estimates in Canada using serum ferrin (SF) and evaluate different correction methods for inflammation based on c-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS: Data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey cycles 3-6 (2012-2019) formed a multiyear, cross-sectional, nationally representative sample (3-79 y) (n = 21,453). WHO cutoffs for SF and hemoglobin were used to estimate iron deficiency (ID), iron deficiency anemia (IDA), a

Maternal vitamin D levels and male reproductive health: a population-based follow-up study.

Maternal vitamin D levels during pregnancy may be important for reproductive health in male offspring by regulating cell proliferation and differentiation during development. We conducted a follow-up study of 827 young men from the Fetal Programming of Semen Quality (FEPOS) cohort, nested in the Danish National Birth Cohort to investigate if maternal vitamin D levels were associated with measures of reproductive health in adult sons. These included semen characteristics, testes volume, and reproductive hormone levels and were analysed according to maternal vitamin D (25(OH)D3) levels during pr

Population genomics implies potential public health risk of two non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae lineages.

Diarrheal cases caused by non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae have been reported globally. Lineages L3b and L9, characterized as ctxAB-negative and tcpA-positive (CNTP), pose the highest risk and have caused long-term epidemics in different regions worldwide. From 2001 to 2018, two waves (2001-2012 and 2013-2018) of epidemic caused by non-toxigenic V. cholerae occurred in the developed city of Hangzhou, China. In this study, through the integrated analysis of 207 genomes of Hangzhou isolates from these two waves (119 and 88) and 1573 publicly available genomes, we showed that L3b and L9 lineages tog

Direct health care costs of managing perianal Crohn's Disease in a population based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease is a chronic condition that places a high health care cost burden. Perianal Crohn's disease (pCD) is a difficult phenotype to treat due to poorer response to medical and surgical therapies. No study has assessed if this translates to higher healthcare costs. The aim is to assess the cost of treating pCD and compare to the cost of non-perianal Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control cohort study in a population-based setting. The direct healthcare costs for patients with pCD were calculated over 12 months. Data was compared to the control

Population vs Individual Prediction of Poor Health From Results of Adverse Childhood Experiences Screening.

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for health problems in a population. However, it is not known whether screening for ACEs can accurately identify individuals who develop later health problems. OBJECTIVE: To test the predictive accuracy of ACE screening for later health problems. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study comprised 2 birth cohorts: the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study observed 2232 participants born during the period from 1994 to 1995 until they were aged 18 years (2012-2014); the Dunedin Multidisciplinar

Traumatic Brain Injury in the General Population: Incidence, Mental Health Comorbidity, and Functional Impact.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a relatively prevalent and burdensome condition with significant public health cost; however, epidemiological studies of TBI in the United States have rarely used nationally representative samples or included measures of functioning. Data were obtained from the third wave of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. Of the 36,309 individuals surveyed, 193 (0.53% weighted) reported a past-year TBI. Results from weighted logistic regression modeling indicated that prior active duty military status, mood disorders, posttraumatic stress

Population-based dementia prediction model using Korean public health examination data: A cohort study.

The early identification and prevention of dementia is important for reducing its worldwide burden and increasing individuals' quality of life. Although several dementia prediction models have been developed, there remains a need for a practical and precise model targeted to middle-aged and Asian populations. Here, we used national Korean health examination data from adults (331,126 individuals, 40-69 years of age, mean age: 52 years) from 2002-2003 to predict the incidence of dementia after 10 years. We divided the dataset into two cohorts to develop and validate of our prediction model. Cox
