Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening and preventive treatment is one of the components of the World Health Organization (WHO) End TB strategy, and particularly relevant for low tuberculosis (TB) incidence countries, i.e. less than 100 TB cases per million population. The Netherlands is such a low-incidence country with traditionally a strong emphasis on programmatic management of LTBI, e.g. examining contacts of infectious TB patients by the public health services. Increasingly, curative services are involved in LTBI management of clinical risk groups. The country recently adopted a

This study aimed to describe the quality and costs of sexually transmitted disease (STD) case management in urban pharmacies in The Gambia, and explore pharmacy workers' (PWs) willingness to improve the STD care they provide. PWs from 24 registered pharmacies were interviewed in order to collect information on their knowledge and practices regarding management of STDs. The same pharmacies were visited by a male 'simulated client' (SC) to ascertain how urethral discharge syndrome (UDS) cases were managed in practice. Fifteen (63%) pharmacies were equipped for treatment of UDS, pelvic inflammato

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) has been eliminated or significantly reduced as a public health problem in several previously highly endemic regions. This has been achieved by the long-term application of prevention and control measures primarily targeted to deworming dogs, health education, meat inspection, and effective surveillance in livestock and human populations. Human CE, however, remains a serious neglected zoonotic disease in many resource-poor pastoral regions. The incidence of human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) has increased in continental Europe and is a major public health probl

Clostridium difficile infection is an important health problem worldwide and leads to increased morbidity and mortality, particularly among the elderly population. Antibiotics, especially those with a broad spectrum, often trigger the infection; hence the use of unnecessary antibiotics should be avoided. Mild to moderate cases respond to metronidazole or vancomycin. Severe cases may require bowel resection. Chronic relapsing cases require a prolonged course of antibiotics, immunoglobulin, probiotics, and, occasionally, feces enema. This review provides a comprehensive update on pathogenesis an

In the beginning of the 19th century, vaccination against smallpox spread rapidly in Europe and out of Europe. Although most statesmen eagerly adopted the vaccine, populations displayed mixed attitudes, ranging from mild enthusiasm to resistance. The article illustrates the social response with examples drawn from Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Brazil. This analysis puts in sharp focus the crucial importance of a factor for the managers of public health: the adhesion of populations.

Three and a half million people live in metropolitan Atlanta, in multiple counties with varying population bases, resources, issues and separate boards of health. Historically, public health issues have been managed within each county, with very little sharing of information among counties. The 1999 West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak in the Northeast caused public health officials in Atlanta to recognize the potential for the disease to spread to Georgia and the need to develop a coordinated, multi-jurisdictional response plan. This plan would need to address a new disease with little scientific d

Recently, there have been considerable advancements in cancer therapies thereby prolonging the life of cancer survivors. However, these recent advancements present new challenges in the management of bone disease in cancer survivors. Bone acts as a fertile soil for cancer seeding and bone health is often compromised because of increased inflammatory cytokines in cancer, direct cancer metastasis and toxic effects of anti-cancer therapies. This effect is more pronounced in elderly population who already have compromised bone mineral density leading to increased skeletal related events and bone p

The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases in the aging global population has led to widespread use of systemic medications, often resulting in polypharmacy among geriatric patients. While these drugs are essential for managing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and autoimmune disorders, their adverse effects on oral health remain underrecognized and insufficiently studied. This review synthesizes current literature alongside cross-sectional observational data to evaluate the multifaceted impact of commonly prescribed systemic medications on oral health outc

Humanitarian crises represent a significant public health risk factor for affected populations exacerbating mortality, morbidity, disabilities, and reducing access to and quality of health care. Reliable and timely information on the health status of and services provided to crisis-affected populations is crucial to establish public health priorities, mobilize funds, and monitor the performance of humanitarian action. Numerous efforts have contributed to standardizing and presenting timely public health information in humanitarian settings over the last two decades. While the prominence of pro

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain is one of the most common health conditions worldwide. It is defined as pain below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds. Current guidelines recommend management of chronic health (e.g., low back pain) conditions in older people at primary health care settings using active strategies (e.g., exercise). In non-specific low back pain, high quality evidence supports active strategies for general population. However, the management of non-specific low back pain in the older people has been overlooked and evidence is limited to a small number of low powered

Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are considered to be the second leading cause of death during infancy and childhood. However, due to advanced imaging techniques, more than 90% of children with complex CHD survive into adulthood, increasing the prevalence of CHD in the population. Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) is considered to be the most common, complex, cyanotic CHD. Health is an important determinant of a patient's quality of life and this drove physicians to examine ToF patient's health related quality of life (HRQOL), in order to improve medical and surgical interventions. The purpose of this

BACKGROUND: Health navigators are healthcare professionals who specialize in care coordination, case management, navigating transitions, and reducing barriers to care. There is limited literature on the impact of health navigators on community-based palliative care for people experiencing homelessness.
AIM: We devised key performance indicators in nine categories with the aim to quantify the impact of a health navigator on the delivery of palliative care to patients experiencing homelessness.
DESIGN: Data were collected prospectively for all patient encounters involving a health navigator fr

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has emerged as a distinct diagnostic entity, unique from other endotypes of CRS in its presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. As the sinonasal health of this patient population may have broad effects on pulmonary health and quality of life, a comprehensive understanding of the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to CF CRS is essential. In recognizing recent scientific advances and unique treatment modalities specific to this challenging patient population, in this review we systematically evaluate the sci

PROBLEM: Sexual minority youths are youths who identify themselves as gay or lesbian, bisexual, or unsure of their sexual identity or youths who have only had sexual contact with persons of the same sex or with both sexes. Population-based data on the health-risk behaviors practiced by sexual minority youths are needed at the state and local levels to most effectively monitor and ensure the effectiveness of public health interventions designed to address the needs of this population.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant associated with combustion emissions and adverse human health outcomes. In West Africa, however, limited ground-based monitoring has hindered regional assessment of population exposure to air pollution. This work leverages the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and gridded population density data to develop and evaluate the population exposure pattern to NO2 across West Africa. A population-weighted exposure (PWE) metric was developed to quantify exposure intensity in inhabited areas (≥50 people km-2). Spatial patterns of NO2 we

Among various modifiable risk factors, dietary patterns (DPs), as a holistic lifestyle intervention, have become a focus of current research due to their protective effects on cognitive health. Classic Western DPs, such as the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), have been widely confirmed to effectively improve cognitive function, thereby reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, existing evidence mainly concentrates on Western populations and their DPs, including the MODERN (Machine learning-assisted Optimizing Dietary intERvention against demeNtia risk) diet optimized using machine l

BACKGROUND: Failed airway management remains one of the most common causes of cardiopulmonary arrest in the pediatric population. Practice guidelines addressing the difficult airway (DAW) in adults provide anesthesiologists a framework for managing the airway during the perioperative period; however, similar consensus guidelines are lacking in the pediatric population. Many of the adverse events associated with difficult pediatric airway management occur outside the perioperative setting and often result in worse outcomes. The lower frequency of DAW management required in children, lesser awar

Health literacy (HL) plays a crucial role in the self-management and clinical outcomes of individuals with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). Despite its significance, research on HL in this population remains fragmented. This scoping review aims to map the existing literature on HL in T1DM and assess its impact on disease management. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering studies up to January 2025. The review included 55 studies, primarily focusing on adolescents and young adults, examining key HL dimensions such as numeracy, s
