The National Children's Study: a 21-year prospective study of 100,000 American children.

Prospective, multiyear epidemiologic studies have proven to be highly effective in discovering preventable risk factors for chronic disease. Investigations such as the Framingham Heart Study have produced blueprints for disease prevention and saved millions of lives and billions of dollars. To discover preventable environmental risk factors for disease in children, the US Congress directed the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, through the Children's Health Act of 2000, to conduct the National Children's Study. The National Children's Study is hypothesis-driven and will

A method for estimating time dependent intervention benefits under arbitrarily varying age and exogenous components of hazard.

A method for estimating the dependence of intrinsic intervention benefits on time elapsed since the intervention took place is proposed. The method is aimed at intervention programs against diseases where one or all of the following components of hazard intensity may undergo important and unknown variations: 1) the intervention benefits to a subject are a function of the time elapsed since the intervention took place, or since inception for a continuing treatment, 2) the subjects vulnerability is an unknown function of their age, 3) the exogenous or environmental baseline intensity, to which a

Results of a Peer Navigator Program to Address Chronic Illness Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness.

People who are homeless disproportionately experience the burdens of chronic disease, have limited access to preventive care, and may be less trusting of healthcare agencies. The Collective Impact Project created and evaluated an innovative model designed to increase chronic disease screening and referral to healthcare and public health services. Trained Peer Navigators (PNs), who were paid staff with lived experiences similar to the clients served, were embedded in five agencies serving people experiencing homelessness or at risk for homelessness. Over two years, PNs engaged 1071 individuals.

Recommendations From the Women's Preventive Services Initiative on Breast Cancer Screening for Women at Average Risk and Patient Navigation Services for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening.

The Women's Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) expanded its previous breast cancer screening recommendation-initiate annual or biennial mammography screening for women at average risk of breast cancer between the ages of 40 and 50 years-by including additional imaging and pathology evaluation as part of the screening process if needed. Consistent with the previous recommendation, screening should continue through at least age 74 years, and age alone should not be the basis for discontinuing screening. To increase utilization of screening recommendations, the WPSI also issued a new recommend

The role of genetics in the provision of essential public health services.

States include genetics services among their public health programs, but budget shortfalls raise the question, is genetics an essential part of public health? We used the Essential Services of Public Health consensus statement and data from state genetics plans to analyze states' public health genetics programs. Public health genetics programs fulfill public health obligations: birth defects surveillance and prevention programs protect against environmental hazards, newborn screening programs prevent injuries, and clinical genetics programs ensure the quality and accessibility of health servic

A Digital Approach for Addressing Suicidal Ideation and Behaviors in Youth Mental Health Services: Observational Study.

The use of digital technology is a potential solution for prompt identification of youth with high suicidality. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a digital suicidality notification system designed to detect and respond to suicidal needs in youth mental health services. Second, the study aimed to characterize young people at different levels of

A cognitive approach to child abuse prevention.

This investigation tested the incremental utility of cognitive retraining as a component within a program designed to prevent child maltreatment. High-risk families (N = 96) were randomly assigned to a control condition, home visitation modeled after the Healthy Start program (unenhanced home visitation), or home visitation that included a cognitive component (enhanced home visitation). Mothers were identified late during pregnancy or soon after birth, and their participation continued for 1 year. Lower levels of harsh parenting were found among mothers in the enhanced home visitation conditio

Elimination of bancroftian filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti) in Santa Catarina state, Brazil.

During the 1950s, three foci of Wuchereria bancrofti transmission were identified in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In Florianópolis, São José da Ponta Grossa and Barra da Laguna community treatment of bancroftian filariasis with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) was performed using two distinct approaches, without vector control or improvements in sanitation. In two of the three communities only microfilaraemic individuals were treated, while in Barra da Laguna the entire population received DEC treatment regardless of their infection status. In both cases, transmission of the parasite was block

Pharmacy workforce to prevent and manage non-communicable diseases in developing nations: The case of Nepal.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs, e.g. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes mellitus) are the main causes of mortality and morbidity in developing countries, including Nepal. Nearly half of the deaths in Nepal are caused by NCDs. Nepal lacks adequate human resources to prevent and manage NCDs, but the skills and expertise of pharmacists in Nepal are underused. There is evidence from many countries that pharmacists can contribute substantially to the prevention and management NCD. We aim to describe the opportunities and challenges for pharmacists to prevent

Community water fluoridation policy and population oral health: a policy analysis.

Dental caries (tooth decay) remains the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide and continues to impose significant dental and systemic health and economic burdens despite being largely preventable. Untreated disease contributes to pain, infection, reduced quality of life, and increased demand for restorative dental care. Governments, therefore, face policy decisions regarding population-level prevention strategies. This analysis evaluates policy options related to population-level fluoride exposure, including maintaining existing community water fluoridation (CWF) programs, expanding fl

Describing an integrated partnership approach to improving sexual health literacy and service navigation for international students in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: The population of international students (IS) in New South Wales (NSW) continues to grow post-COVID-19, with IS a key priority within NSW Health HIV and sexually transmissible infection (STI) strategies and efforts. Evidence shows gaps in sexual and reproductive health knowledge (SRH), and barriers to accessing services, including stigma, unfamiliarity with the Australian healthcare system and service cost concerns. Although the existing NSW International Student Health Hub website provides tailored information, awareness and utilisation of statewide and local sexual health prevent

Parental factors influencing children's oral health in Saudi Arabia: a narrative review.

Children's oral health is strongly shaped by family-level influences, yet the role of parental factors in Saudi Arabia has not been comprehensively synthesized.
