A 67-year-old patient presented to the community pharmacy with poorly controlled postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) pain following an episode of herpes zoster. The clinical pharmacist did a medication review and found that, although the patient was receiving medications proven effective in the treatment of PHN, she was not receiving optimal therapy. Additionally, the patient was experiencing intolerable side effects. The pharmacist provided recommendations to the patient's primary care physician that ultimately improved the patient's pain control. Managing PHN pain requires practitioners to be vigil

Positive behavior support interventions such as functional communication training (FCT) and visual schedules are increasingly being used with individuals with autism and other severe developmental disabilities who engage in problem behavior and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The increasing use of these communication interventions has implications for speech-language pathologists who provide support to these individuals. The purpose of this tutorial is to summarize the research regarding the use of FCT/AAC interventions and visual schedules, and to provide suggestions for

BACKGROUND: Many patients with cancer (45-60%) use natural health products (NHPs). Pharmacists often find it difficult to advise these patients effectively.
OBJECTIVE: To explore pharmacists' perceptions of the information needed to advise cancer patients on NHPs and develop a structured counseling approach.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using a focus group of pharmacists from an integrated cancer care organization in Canada. The outcome measures were the definitions of and reasons for the information needed to advise patients on NHPs and a counseling approach using laymen terms

The expansion of support staff roles throughout the NHS was identified as a key element in the drive for service improvements set out in the NHS plan (Department of Health 2000). However, while examination of the literature identified the opinions of professional representative bodies (Perioperative Care Collaborative 2002a&b), little published data is available of the opinions of staff 'on the shop floor'.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research nurses (CRNs) play a key role in delivering safe and ethical research within healthcare systems. However, the role remains variably understood, and nurses transitioning from ward-based practice may encounter role ambiguity, inconsistent induction and challenges to professional identity.
AIM: To critically reflect on the transition from ward-based nursing into clinical research nursing and to identify implications for workforce support and professional development.
DISCUSSION: A reflective practice approach was used, drawing on professional experience across resp

INTRODUCTION People receiving opioid substitution treatment are a vulnerable population who experience significant health inequities and stigma, but have regular interactions with community pharmacists. Many pharmacists now work collaboratively with other health providers to ensure effective and safe use of medicines, as well as being involved in the prevention and management of chronic health conditions. AIM To explore the role of New Zealand community pharmacists in the provision of opioid substitution treatment and how they perceive their role as part of the wider opioid substitution treatm

The effect of an intervention programme to improve health education leaflet uptake in community pharmacies was conducted with a small convenience sample of 12 community pharmacies in North Staffordshire, UK. The intervention consisted of four different modes of leaflet provision. Modes 1 and 2 (without and with overt offer of advice from pharmacist respectively) relied upon the pharmacy client to actively obtain a leaflet, whereas Modes 3 and 4 (without and with offer of advice from pharmacist respectively) relied upon pharmacy staff to actively provide a leaflet. All 12 community pharmacies r

BACKGROUND: Regulating risk, freedom of action, and autonomy in decision making are problems shared by both caregivers and residents in long term care settings, and may become the subject of tension and constant negotiation.
OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on long term care staff and management perceptions of day to day life in a care community which has gone through a culture change transition, where small residentially scaled households replace large instutional models of care. In each household, the setting is considered to be home for the 8-12 residents, creating a major shift of roles for

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact and mechanisms of COVID-19 on the professional identity of nursing students, providing theoretical and practical insights to inform nursing education reform.
METHOD: This study employed Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenological method to explore nursing students' experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data collection continued until information saturation was achieved. Data analysis followed Colaizzi's seven-step approach: (1) reading all participants' descriptions to gain a general understanding, (2) extracting significant statements, (3) f

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus has become more prevalent over the years. This chronic disease can lead to complications, such as diabetic foot ulcers. The objective of this study was to explore the barriers and opportunities of community pharmacists and nurses collaborating on managing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) in community pharmacies in South Africa.
METHODS: Two online focus group discussions were conducted in South Africa in 2023 on MS Teams®. Participants included community pharmacists, Primary Care Drug Therapy pharmacists, and academic nursing staff.
KEY FINDINGS: Two themes emerged.

Objectives. To examine patterns of community health worker (CHW) core roles within the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program through a latent class analysis (LCA). Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted in the United States during February and March 2024. LCA was used to examine whether distinct classes existed according to patterns of reported engagement in CHW core roles in the CCR program. Results. The study findings supported a 2-class model: (1) "low assessment and evaluation CHWs," which represented 52.6% of C

OBJECTIVE: Prognostic awareness, defined as patients’ understanding of their illness trajectory and likely prognosis, is an essential component of informed decision-making, values-based care planning, and high-quality palliative care. Although discussing prognosis is traditionally viewed as a physician-led task, palliative social workers (PSWs) are often involved in interventions that require prognostic understanding. Little is known, however, about the role social workers play in cultivating prognostic awareness, the professional boundaries surrounding prognostic discussions, and how PSWs’ en

BACKGROUND: Understanding how occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) engage in advocacy and factors influencing their efforts has potential to position practitioners as empowered change agents. While advocacy is essential to occupational therapy (OT) practice, literature reveals inconsistencies in how OTPs conceptualize and implement advocacy. This study explored OTPs' perspectives on the definitions, knowledge, meaning, challenges, and experiences with professional advocacy in OT.
METHOD: This mixed-methods study used a researcher-designed, 23-question electronic survey to collect data fr

Hypertension, a global health burden affecting over a billion individuals, significantly contributes to cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Despite the availability of effective antihypertensive therapies, medication adherence remains a critical challenge, particularly in low-resource settings. Pharmacist-led interventions have emerged as an effective strategy to enhance adherence and optimize blood pressure (BP) control. Pharmacists' accessibility enables tailored interventions addressing multifaceted barriers to adherence, such as patient education, complex medication regimens, and commun

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, almost 60% of patients seeking care at primary healthcare centers do so due to musculoskeletal disorders. These patients constitute a strain on the healthcare system. Manual therapists are experts in diagnosing patients with these conditions but are usually not part of healthcare centers in Sweden. Further, there is a significant societal problem with overuse of medications, injections, medical imaging, and unnecessary surgeries, so-called low-value care, for back and neck pain. We aimed to explore the current management of patients with back and neck pain in primary hea

Illness-induced trauma (IIT) might cause a disruption in an individual's occupational performance. To examine occupational therapy practitioners' (OTPs) perspectives and role in addressing IIT. In this descriptive mixed-methods design, 24 OTPs completed an online survey and 10 OTPs participated in a semi-structured 1:1 interview. Survey questions asked about knowledge regarding IIT. Interviews addressed incorporation of IIT knowledge and trauma-informed care (TIC) into practice. Quantitative results showed most OTPs (64%) did not receive TIC training and believed training was inadequate. Quali
