[Prostatic specific antigen and prostatic pathology. Value of preoperative blood assay. Preliminary study apropos of 709 case reports].

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a prostate tissue marker detected by immunostaining in 97% of specimens examined. Tissue staining is variable and cancers are more heterogeneous than normal or hyperplastic prostate. Serum PSA levels in patients with normal or hyperplastic lesions are 12 ng/ml + 19 and are positively correlated with the weight of the gland. In patients with carcinoma serum PSA levels are 216 ng/ml + 782 and are positively correlated with tumor spread. PSA assay is of little value for screening for prostatic carcinoma. However, carcinoma of prostate is more frequent when PSA l

Molecular forms of prostate-specific antigen in the serum of women with benign and malignant breast diseases.

Using a highly sensitive immunofluorometric procedure, we measured the total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration in 632 sera obtained from female blood donors and women with idiopathic hirsutism, breast cancer or benign breast diseases. A total of 50 sera with total PSA > 15 ng l(-1) were fractionated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in order to resolve the two immunoreactive molecular forms, i.e. free PSA (approximately 30 kDa) and PSA bound to alpha1-antichymotrypsin (PSA-ACT, 100 kDa). We found that breast cancer patients have presurgical serum total PSA levels sim…

Enhancing Prostate Cancer Detection: Integrating Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging and 68Ga-prostate-specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography with Machine Learning.

PURPOSE: Early and accurate detection of clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) is crucial for effective patient management. Traditional diagnostic methods, including systematic biopsy guided by transrectal ultrasound, have limitations in detecting significant cancers. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has shown promise in overcoming these limitations, but it remains operator-dependent and may miss some significant cases. This study explores the integration of mpMRI with 68Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (68Ga-PSMA P

A Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET-Based Approach for Improved Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer in Gleason Grade Group 1: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

The preoperative Gleason grade group (GG) from transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy is crucial for treatment decisions but may underestimate the postoperative GG and miss clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa), particularly in patients with biopsy GG1. In such patients, an SUVmax of at least 12 has 100% specificity for detecting csPCa. In patients with an SUVmax of less than 12, we aimed to develop a model to improve the diagnostic accuracy of csPCa. Methods: The study retrospectively included 56 prostate cancer patients with transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy GG1 and an SUV

Prostate-specific Antigen Decline After 4 Weeks of Treatment with Abiraterone Acetate and Overall Survival in Patients with Metastatic Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The availability of multiple new treatments for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) mandates earlier treatment switches in the absence of a response. A decline in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is widely used to monitor treatment response, but is not validated as an intermediate endpoint for overall survival (OS). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between early PSA decline and OS following abiraterone acetate (AA) treatment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We identified mCRPC patients treated with AA before or after docetaxel at the Royal Marsden NHS …
