Evaluating a multidisciplinary inpatient program for youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Among youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), older adolescents demonstrate more dysglycemia and less adherence to disease management. Poor disease management during this time of development can continue into adulthood, perpetuating the economic and health burden to the individual, health care system and society. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an inpatient multidisciplinary approach to treating youth with T1D. All T1D admissions to the 4 week Chronic Illness Management Program (CIMP) between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2017 were eligible for inclusion. Data related to

An Update on Evidence-Based Psychosocial Treatments for Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Eating disorders are relatively common and serious disorders in adolescents. However, there are few controlled psychosocial intervention studies with this younger population. This review updates a previous Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology review published in 2008. The recommendations in this review were developed after searching the literature including PubMed/Medline and employing the relevant medical subject headings. In addition, the bibliographies of book chapters and treatment guideline articles were reviewed; last, colleagues were asked for suggested additional source

Association Between the Japanese Version of the Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplantation and Adjustment Disorder in Japanese Patients Using Ventricular Assist Devices as a Bridge to Heart Transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: Ventricular assist device (VAD) serves as either a bridge to transplantation (BTT) or destination therapy (DT) for end-stage heart failure. In Japan, the extended wait time for heart transplants can make VAD usage for BTT comparable in duration to DT in other countries. Previous studies suggest that while DT patients experience improved quality of life post-VAD implantation, BTT patients often see a decline after two years. This study aims to explore the association between scores of the Japanese version of the Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplantation (SIPAT-J

'The healthcare system was just trying to deal with me without really dealing with me': exploring individual experiences of methamphetamine-related emergency department visits in Calgary - a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use has risen dramatically in North America, contributing to increased emergency department (ED) visits marked by agitation and complex psychosocial needs. While clinical consequences of methamphetamine use are well-documented, there is a paucity of research capturing the perspectives of people who use methamphetamines (PWUM) when accessing emergency care. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of PWUM in ED settings to identify service gaps and inform patient-centered care strategies. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted using semi-s

Measurement and practical aspects of quality of life in breast cancer.

There are many aspects of quality of life which are non-intuitive and need to be studied to get information for the improvement of cancer treatment. There is general agreement that quality of life should be measured as an important end-point in clinical trials, especially when palliative treatment is intended. The present paper summarizes the main aspects of measurement of quality of life as well as the results of quality of life studies concerning breast cancer. Many practical problems in our health care system clearly undermine the quality of life of cancer patients. The Finnish Hospital Lea

Unraveling access barriers and challenges of sexual and reproductive health services for individuals with psychosocial disabilities in Nigeria: insights from family, caregivers, and community stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial disability (PSD) refers to the limitations experienced by persons with mental illness (PWMI) in interacting with their social environment. Persons with psychosocial disabilities (PPSD) face significant barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services due to structural and institutional barriers. Despite commitments under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), there are persistent rights violations and denial of PPSD to exercise their rights and access services related to SRH care. This study aimed to explore the multifacete

Mapping health policies for optimum service delivery to adolescents on HIV treatment in Zambia: a document review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite significant advances in HIV treatment regimens, adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) report lower rates of viral suppression compared to other age groups, reflecting sub-optimal adherence and lower engagement in care. In Zambia, adolescents lag behind in meeting the 95-95-95 targets for HIV care, when compared to adults. It is imperative that the specific needs of ALHIV are addressed in health policies that direct service delivery. This paper reports on Zambian health policies (policy documents and guidelines) that direct the provision of HIV care and treatment services fo

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial to pilot Restore Energy, Activity Can Help (REACH): an mHealth-enabled peer coaching intervention for fatigue in systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue affects up to 90 % of individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), significantly impairing quality of life. Despite its impact, fatigue remains difficult to treat due to its multifactorial nature, including behavioral, psychosocial, and pain-related contributors. While physical activity interventions show promise in reducing SLE-related fatigue, they often fail to address these broader factors and are limited by accessibility challenges. Innovative, scalable solutions are needed to improve fatigue management in SLE. METHODS: The Restore Energy, Activity Can Help (R

Retention in intensive adherence counselling as a pathway to viral suppression among virally non-suppressed adolescents and young people living with HIV in east-central Uganda: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive Adherence Counselling (IAC) is the recommended intervention for people living with HIV who experience virological non-suppression. However, evidence on retention across the IAC cascade and factors influencing sustained engagement among adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV) remains limited. We assessed retention in IAC, its associated factors, and its relationship with viral load suppression among virally non-suppressed AYPLHIV in east-central Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study across 32 public health facilities. Qu

A Machine Learning-Guided Lyric Analysis Peer Support Intervention (LAPSI) for Psychological Distress in South African Women: Protocol for an Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress disproportionately affects women in South Africa and is shaped by complex structural, socioeconomic, and psychosocial determinants, particularly within the context of HIV. Despite policy commitments to integrate mental health services into existing health systems, current interventions are limited in their capacity to address these intersecting determinants and are frequently insufficiently targeted, contextually responsive, or inclusive. Data-driven strategies that identify subgroup-specific vulnerabilities may improve the design of contextually relevant and

Health-related quality of life and associated factors among older adults attending primary care clinics in Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing in Nigeria is associated with rising chronic diseases, psychosocial challenges, weakened traditional family support systems, and limited social security, which may negatively affect the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) of older adults. While depression, anxiety, and chronic illnesses have been extensively studied, the effects of spirituality and spiritual needs on HR-QoL among older adults in Nigerian primary care are still under explored despite the central role of spirituality in Nigeria's sociocultural context. OBJECTIVE: To assess the HR-QoL and its as

Psychosocial career preoccupation and organisational commitment at higher educational institutions in Ghana: The role of workplace friendship.

Empirically, the study examined how psychosocial career preoccupation [PCP] directly affects organizational commitment [OC] and indirectly affects the same via workplace friendship [WF] among administrative and teaching staff in public higher education institutions in Ghana. The numerical orientation to the data analysis supported the use of the explanatory research design and quantitative approach. The population included both administrative and teaching staff in public higher education institutions in Ghana with at least one year of service. Structured questionnaires were issued for the prim

Cannabis use increases surgical, medical, and psychosocial complications after lower extremity fracture fixation and shows compounded risk with concurrent nicotine use.

Cannabis use is rapidly increasing in the United States, yet its perioperative implications remain poorly understood, particularly in trauma populations. Despite expanding legalization, the perioperative effects of cannabis on surgical outcomes remain uncertain. This retrospective cohort study used electronic health record data to evaluate the association between cannabis use, with and without concurrent nicotine exposure, and postoperative outcomes following orthopedic lower extremity trauma fixation. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Research Network, a global feder

Paediatric-to-adult transition in inherited arrhythmia syndromes.

Inherited arrhythmia syndromes (IAS)-including long QT syndrome (LQTS), catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), and Brugada syndrome (BrS)-are important causes of sudden cardiac death in the young. Although molecular diagnosis and cascade screening have improved prevention, adolescence and emerging adulthood remain vulnerable periods. Transition (planned readiness building) and transfer (handoff to adult services) are frequently complicated by loss to follow-up, medication lapses, and incomplete transmission of clinical and genetic information. IAS adds unique complexitie

The critical intersection of survivorship and palliative care in people with metastatic breast cancer.

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) remains incurable, but as survival improves, individuals are living longer and experience complex, evolving needs that span medical, psychosocial, and existential domains. These needs are often inadequately addressed by existing care models. Survivorship programs frequently exclude those with incurable disease, while palliative care is commonly delayed due to stigma, misperceptions, and systemic barriers. This paper explores the critical intersection of survivorship and palliative care in the context of MBC, advocating for an integrated, person-centered model tha
