INTRODUCTION: Chronic radiation proctitis complicating pelvic radiotherapy can be debilitating. It commonly presents with rectal bleeding, which can be difficult to control. Medical management of hemorrhagic radiation proctitis is not very successful, although surgery carries high risks. Thus, endoscopic treatments are preferred. Radiation injury to the skin is one of the major limiting factors in radiotherapy. We designed this study using Sprague-Dawley rats to evaluate the reduction in skin injury achieved using natural products from plant extracts as protection. Multiple center randomized controlled double blind clinical trait was conducted to evaluate the anti-radiotherapy effect by SOD (produced by Hunan Biochemical Work) in 159 patients. Injection of 4000U SOD immediately after receiving radiotherapy significantly reduced the occurrence rate of skin, oral mucosal, pelvic visceral and systematic adverse reaction, only the reduction of leukopenia did not reach the statistical significant level. No adverse effect of SOD injection was observed. The results suggest that SOD is a safe and effective agent to attenuate the radiotherapy reactions.

Cerebral necrosis is a well-known delayed sequela of radiation to the central nervous system. Delayed intracerebral hemorrhage occurring several years after radiation is rare; however, with increased survival, this complication will become more common. A single dose of sodium selenite (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.) was injected intraperitoneally into mice on day 9 of pregnancy, either 30 min or 2 h before 1.75 Gy whole body irradiation. A 14-year-old boy with a malignant astrocytoma in the third ventricle, who showed reversible delayed radiation effects on the brain, is presented. One and a half months after the completion of a course of radiation therapy, the patient gradually became drowsy complaining of headaches, general malaise and disturbance of gait. The symptoms and abnormalities in the CT scans were the most severe seven months after irradiation and then spontaneously subsided. CT scan could not differentiate it from a recurrence of the tumor when first seen, but was extremely useful in following these findings.
