Direct and indirect measurement of patient radiation exposure during endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.

With the increasing complexity of endovascular procedures, concern has grown regarding patient radiation exposure. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair represents the most common complex endovascular procedure currently performed by vascular specialists. Our study evaluates the patient radiation dose received during endovascular AAA repair. Over a 3-month period we prospectively monitored the radiation dose in a series of consecutive patients undergoing endovascular AAA repair. All patients underwent standard endovascular AAA repair with one of two commercially available grafts using the GE …

Exposure assessment and other challenges in non-ionizing radiation studies of childhood leukaemia.

Studies of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and the development of childhood leukaemia face unique difficulties. EMF are imperceptible, ubiquitous, have multiple sources, and can vary greatly over time and distances. Childhood leukaemia and high average exposures to magnetic fields are both quite rare. Thus, a major challenge in EMF epidemiology is the small number of highly exposed cases and the necessity for retrospective assessment of exposure. Only studies designed to minimize bias while maximizing our ability to detect an association, should one exist, would have a potential to contribute to

Risk of thyroid cancer after childhood exposure to ionizing radiation for tinea capitis.

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland is known to be sensitive to the carcinogenic effect of ionizing radiation, especially in children. The role of potential modifiers of the risk and latency period effects needs further investigation. We examined the effect of low doses of ionizing radiation (4.5-49.5 cGy) on the risk of developing thyroid cancer after long latent periods of up to 54 yr after childhood exposure. METHODS: The study population included 10,834 individuals irradiated against tinea capitis in the 1950s and two matched nonirradiated groups (general population and siblings) for comparison

Radial arm maze performance of rats following repeated low level microwave radiation exposure.

We examined the possibility of changes in "working" memory of rats following whole body exposure to microwave (MW) radiation. During each of 10 days, we exposed rats within circularly polarized waveguides for 45 min to 2450 MHz fields at whole body SARs of 0.6 W/kg (2 micros pulses, 500 pps), followed by testing in a 12 arm, radial arm maze (RAM). Rats received a preexposure injection of one of three psychoactive compounds or saline, to determine whether a compound would interact with MW exposure to affect performance in the maze. Error rate, i.e., reentry into arms already visited, and time t

Spatial positioning of RET and H4 following radiation exposure leads to tumor development.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a well-known risk factor for a number of human cancers, including leukemia, thyroid cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, and many others. Although it has been known for a long time that radiation exposure to the cell results in extensive DNA damage, including double strand DNA breaks, the exact mechanisms of radiation-induced carcinogenesis remain unknown. Recently, a large increase in incidence of thyroid cancer was observed in children exposed to radiation after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. A high prevalence of chromosomal rearrangements involving the RET gene w…

Exposure to ionizing radiation in the emergency department from commonly performed portable radiographs.

To accurately assess the potential hazard of exposure to ionizing radiation from portable radiographs taken in the emergency department, a study was performed to measure such radiation at different distances from the edge of an irradiated field during portable cervical-spine (pC-S), portable chest radiograph (pCXR), and portable anteroposterior-pelvis (pAP-pelvis) radiographs. For all three types of portable radiographs, radiation exposure is a function of distance from the beam. However, at 40 cm (15 inches) away from the beam during a pC-S or pCXR and at 160 cm (63 inches) from a pAP-pelvis …

Variables influencing radiation exposure during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Review of 298 treatments.

Retrospective review of 298 extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) treatments was undertaken to determine the factors which influence radiation exposure during ESWL. Fluoroscopy time averaged 160 seconds (3-509), and the average number of spot films taken per patient was 26 (5-68). The average stone burden was 19.3 mm (3-64). Average calculated skin surface radiation exposure was 17.8 R per treatment. Radiation exposure increased with increasing stone burden and patient weight. Stones treated in the ureter resulted in a higher average patient radiation exposure than for renal stones (19 …

Temperature regulation in the unrestrained rabbit during exposure to 600 MHz radiofrequency radiation.

Six male New Zealand white rabbits were individually exposed to 600 MHz radiofrequency (RF) radiation for 90 min in a waveguide exposure system at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 20 or 30 degrees C. Immediately after exposure, the rabbit was removed from the exposure chamber and its colonic and ear skin temperatures were quickly measured. The whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) required to increase colonic and ear skin temperature was determined. At a Ta of 20 degrees C the threshold SAR for elevating colonic and ear skin temperature was 0.64 and 0.26 W/kg, respectively. At a Ta of 30 deg

[Mediator function of molecular factors--lipoxygenase enzyme systems during exposure to ionizing radiation].

This paper, which is a review of the national literature on the mediatory function of lipoxygenase systems affected by ionizing radiation, reports data on the functional role of lipoxygenases, their regulator--mediate contribution to radiation response of plants and animals. The latest data are submitted concerning the biological regulatory systems, eicosanoids--leukotrienes, formed under the effect of lipoxygenases which catalyse oxidation of polyunsaturated arachidonic acid (20:4). The structure and function of leukotrienes are described for these are necessary in studying the biochemical fu

[Long-term radiation damage to the skin and eye after combined beta- and gamma- radiation exposure during the reactor accident in Chernobyl].

BACKGROUND: In April 1986, numerous reactor workers and firemen were exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Apart from high ambient gamma-ray exposures they received inhomogeneous contamination with beta-rays from fission products, resulting in severe skin exposure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen of these so called Liquidators were repeatedly examined between 1991 and 1996. Their doses ranged from 0.35 to 9 Gy, partly confirmed by determination of chromosomal aberrations. Ophthalmologic examination included non-subjective assessment of le

Testicular exposure to ionizing radiation and sperm epigenetic alterations as possible mechanisms of hereditary effects: perspectives from the viewpoint of radiation protection.

PURPOSE: Since the genotoxicity of ionizing radiation was demonstrated in the 1920s, its hereditary effects have remained a serious concern for human society. The International Commission on Radiological Protection has highlighted the need for appropriate protection against hereditary effects of radiation in humans. In this paper, we review the literature on the possible multigenerational and transgenerational effects following testicular exposure to radiation, focusing on sperm epigenetic alterations as possible mechanisms. RESULTS: This mini-review highlights that hereditary effects followi

A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial of the effect of a radiation-attenuating drape on radiation exposure to endoscopy staff during ERCP.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is associated with radiation exposure to the endoscopist and staff that may be significant in high-volume centers. We investigated whether a radiation-attenuating drape over the fluoroscopy image intensifier reduces radiation exposure during ERCP. METHODS: We performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind trial of 100 therapeutic ERCPs at a tertiary-care university center. Procedures were randomly assigned to groups receiving lead-free radiation-attenuating drapes (n=50) or identical sham drapes (n=50). The drapes were suspe…

Effective Dose Estimations for the Swiss Survey on Medical Radiation Exposure of the Population in 2023.

To estimate the annual population dose from medical examinations, the frequency of the examinations and the effective dose (E) for each examination needs to be estimated. In the last Swiss survey covering 2023, the dose per capita due to medical irradiation was estimated to be 1.7 mSv. In the framework of the 2023 survey, the E for x-rays' modalities were calculated using different methods (bibliographic review, data from a dose management system, data from older surveys, etc.). This work aims to present the methodology followed for the estimation of E for various modalities. E was estimated f

Mitochondrial DNA alterations in mothers and offspring following in utero exposure to ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation can perturb mitochondrial homeostasis and genomic stability, yet its developmental consequences remain insufficiently und … erved between maternal and offspring responses. These findings highlight mitochondrial responses to radiation exposure during early development and suggest that prenatal irradiation may influence mtDNA regulation, with potential implications for mitochondrial function later in life.

Accidents of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in radiology departments: risks, prevention, and management.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in radiology departments is a rare but important concern, given the potential long-term health effects and the regulatory framework surrounding radioprotection. This review analyzes the main risks associated with exposure to X-rays, including cancer, cataracts, radiodermatitis, pregnancy risks, and reduced fertility, as well as the specific contexts in which accidents occur. The majority of significant exposure incidents are reported in interventional radiology, where proximity to the radiation source and prolonged fluoroscopy times increase operator

Non-cancer effects of radiation exposure: Cataracts, diseases of the circulatory system, and beyond.

For the purpose of radiological protection, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has categorised non-cancer effects having a threshold-type dose response as tissue reactions (formerly called deterministic effects), and recommended equivalent dose limits to prevent the occurrence of such tissue reactions. Accumulated evidence has demonstrated that some non-cancer effects arise years or decades following radiation exposure at doses and dose rates much lower than previously considered. In 2011, ICRP recommended a nominal threshold of 0.5 Gy to the ocular lens for catarac…

Astaxanthin and thiamine dynamics in the copepod Temora longicornis in response to ultraviolet radiation exposure.

Several aquatic top predators suffer from deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine), sometimes combined with low levels of carotenoid pigments, e.g., astaxanthin. The mechanisms leading to correlations between carotenoid pigmentation and thiamine status are not known. These substances and their precursors are produced by single-celled organisms and transferred to higher trophic levels via zooplankton. However, little is known about the factors regulating this transfer process and how it is affected by environmental stressors and zooplankton diet. We therefore exposed a common copepod, Temora longico
