OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Juxtafacet cysts of the lumbar spine are a recognized cause of back pain, radicular symptoms, neurogenic claudication, and, less often, cauda equina compression syndrome. Hemorrhagic rupture of a juxtafacet cyst and the resulting epidural hematoma may cause chronic and/or acute cauda equina compression.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report two cases of ruptured hemorrhagic lumbar synovial cysts resulting in epidural hematoma and progressive symptomatic cauda equina compression.
INTERVENTION: Surgical excision of the epidural hematoma and the associated cyst resulted in

A 23-year-old white man was referred to this Odontostomatologic Service for evaluation of palatal swelling lesion. Oral inspection showed a … he histologic study revealed that these lesions consisted in: 1 keratocyst, 1 naso-palatine cyst, 4 radicular cysts and 1 fiber-connective tissue.

Histochemical examination of odontogenic cyst connective tissue has demonstrated that hyaluronic acid is the predominant glycosaminoglycan present with lesser amounts of the sulphated glycosaminoglycans. Mast cells were frequently observed in the connective tissue, particularly just beneath the epithelium and may be responsible for the enhanced staining for heparin observed in this area. Local tissue metabolism and inflammation will contribute to the release of glycosaminoglycans from connective tissue into the lumenal fluid. Staining of glycosaminoglycans was generally minimal in the epitheli

Apical lesions of endodontic origin can be classified as either granulomas or cysts. In rare cases, respiratory epithelium can proliferate and encapsulate a lesion, forming a cyst. Moreover, the innervation of apical lesions has only been previously reported in animal models of apical periodontitis. This report demonstrates an unusual case in which tooth #15 was initially treated with nonsurgical root canal therapy. Still, the patient remained in moderate to severe pain for several days following the procedure. Next, an intentional replantation was performed in which a periapical cyst was cure

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Endodontics has developed a literature-based study guide of topical areas related to endodontics. This study guide is intended to give the reader a focused review of the essential endodontic literature and does not cite all possible articles related to each topic. Although citing all articles would be comprehensive, it would defeat the idea of a study guide. This section will cover potential immunological reactions, endotoxin, and cysts versus granulomas.

Cysts are among the most common lesions found in the oral cavity. These may be developmental in origin or secondary to chronic infections. Untreated, cysts may expand causing local tissue destruction and deformities. Basically, two treatment methods are employed. Enucleation and/or Marsupialization. The following case involves a child treated at the College of Dentistry, University of the Philippines, for a large cystic lesion involving the permanent cuspid and the deciduous dentition. The lesion was accidentally discovered on a panoramic radiograph. The child underwent extraction of deciduous

The successful treatment of a cystic lesion identified as a globulomaxilary cyst determined a revision of the literature on this type of cysts. The final conclusion, based on clinical and histopathological data from leading authors, is that the so-called globulomaxillary cysts are not anymore considered a separated clinical or pathological entity.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising centrally within the jaws is a rare lesion which exhibits considerable histologic variability and an unpredictable clinical course. Its specific pathogenesis is unknown, although speculation has centered on the pluripotential capabilities of the epithelial lining of odontogenic cysts. The case presented here illustrates the relationship of such a lesion arising from the cyst wall of an apical periodontal cyst.
