A 2-year Comparative Analysis of Outcomes and Endovascular Interventions in Radio-Cephalic vs. Brachio-Cephalic Fistulae.

BACKGROUND: Arterio-venous fistulae are often compromised by complications, notably thrombosis. We assess the 2 year follow-up data of a cohort of patients from a single vascular centre in the UK who underwent BCF or RCF creation with the objective of assessing the outcome differences and intervention rates between fistula types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed a cohort of 195 patients who underwent creation of arterio-venous fistula (100 BCF, 95 RCF) between January 2016 and December 2018, following them up for 2 years assessing the outcomes and interventions on their AVFs

Japanese radio calisthenics prevents the reduction of skeletal muscle mass volume in people with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Reduction of muscle mass and strength is an important treatment target for patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have reported that high-intensity resistance training improves physical function; however, all patients found it difficult to perform high-intensity resistance training. Radio calisthenics, considered as therapeutic exercises to promote health in Japan, are simple exercises that can be performed regardless of age and help move the muscles and joints of the whole body effectively according to the rhythm of radio. We investigated the efficacy of radio calisthenics f…

Radio-Frequency Thermal Plasma Treated Activated Carbon Impregnated with Mn and Ag for Volatile Organic Compounds Adsorption.

In this study, we have prepared a composite adsorbent with highly dispersed Mn and Ag nanocatalyst on the surface of activated carbon (AC) by applying the Radio-Frequency (RF) thermal plasma technique for the efficient removal of VOCs. The ACs before and after metal impregnation with RF plasma treatment were characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, and nitrogen adsorption analysis. Adsorption behaviors of toluene, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde on ACs before and after modification were also investigated in fixed-bed systems. The experimental adsorption results for VOCs on parent ACs and metal impregnat…

Left persistent superior vena cava and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: the role of selective radio-frequency transcatheter ablation.

Persistent left superior vena cava (LPSVC) is a rare congenital anomaly of the thoracic venous system that can trigger paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The role of this venous anomaly must be carefully considered in patients undergoing conventional atrial fibrillation transcatheter ablation by pulmonary vein isolation to avoid unnecessary lesions, left atrium access and arrhythmia relapses. In fact, the present clinical perspective suggests sole LPSVC isolation is a well tolerated and effective approach in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and arrhythmic trigger originating from a LP

Non-invasive therapy of wrinkles and lax skin using a novel multisource phase-controlled radio frequency system.

Abstract The last few years have shown an increased demand for non-invasive skin tightening to improve body contour. Since light (lasers or intense pulsed light sources) has a limited ability to penetrate deep into the tissue, radio frequency (RF) modalities were introduced for the reduction of lax skin to achieve skin tightening and body circumference reduction. This study presents the use of the novel 3DEEP technology for body contouring. 3DEEP is a next generation RF technology that provides targeted heating to deeper skin layers without pain or other local or systemic side effects associat…

Ultrasound guided brachial arterial angioplasty during the creation of a radio-cephalic arteriovenous fistula: a case report.

UNLABELLED: To prevent arteriovenous fistula (AVF) early failure, due to radial or brachial artery stenosis, ultrasound guided angioplasty performed while surgically creating the AVF could be an effective procedure. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old diabetic male patient, on hemodialysis (HD) for 15 months, presented extensive thrombosis of the radio-cephalic AVF at the right arm, which had lasted for about 10 days. Ultrasound examination showed a 40% brachial artery stenosis with eccentric calcified plaque. The stenosis was localized about 1.5 cm before the artery bifurcation. The brachial artery d…

Long-term survival and recurrence-free interval in combined surgical, radio- and chemotherapy of malignant brain gliomas.

A prospective randomized study has been conducted since 1978 to judge the value of combined radio- and chemotherapy (CCNU) in the postoperative treatment of grade III and IV supratentorial gliomas. Inoperable or recurrent tumors were excluded from these series, but evaluated in addition. Increase in median survival time (18 months) for the entire series (62.2% glioblastomas) was only small compared to other series mentioned in literature, but there was a significant prolongation of the recurrence-free interval (16.5 months) and in the total survival time from the onset of symptoms in 46.4% of …

Synergistic enhancement of radio-immunotherapy efficacy by IL-15 via macrophage activation and memory T cell response.

Successful immunotherapy requires systemic activation of the immune system. Radio-immunotherapy has a synergistic effect, enhancing this activation, but still faces many challenges, requiring methods to further improve its efficacy. Interleukin 15 (IL-15) is considered a potential therapeutic agent because of its broad immunoregulatory activity. This study found that in various tumor-bearing mouse models, systemic immune activation mediated by memory T cells in secondary lymphoid organs was crucial after radio-immunotherapy and IL-15 played a key role in this process. Radio-immunotherapy stimu…

Hybrid-Ligand Metal-Organic Frameworks Enabling Radio-Radiodynamic-Chemodynamic Therapy Primes Checkpoint Blockade Immunotherapy in Hypoxic Tumors.

Radiodynamic therapy (RDT) offers a potential strategy to enhance radiation therapy (RT) efficacy by efficiently generating singlet oxygen (1O2) upon radiation. However, both RT and RDT can be compromised by tumor hypoxia. To relieve hypoxia while potentiating RT-RDT, we developed a hybrid-ligand nanoscale metal-organic framework (nMOF), LuMix, for radio-radiodynamic-chemodynamic therapy (RT-RDT-CDT) of tumors with low-dose X-ray. In LuMix, Lu effectively absorbs X-rays to generate hydroxyl radical (•OH) and transfers energy to TCPP to produce 1O2. TCPP(Fe) ligand catalyzes the degradation of …

Response of Male Reproductive System against Ionizing Radiation and Available Radio-protective Agents: Cellular and Molecular Insight.

BACKGROUND: The reproductive organ, housing spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), undergoes ongoing division impacted by the irradiation dosage and exposure duration. Within the male reproductive organ, germ stem cells (spermatogonia) and somatic cells (Sertoli and Leydig cells) are present. Lower doses of ionizing (>4-6 Gy) and non-ionizing radiation (radiofrequency and microwave range 900 MHz - 2.45 GHz) may cause sperm-related issues, while higher doses (15 Gy) may affect Leydig cells and testosterone production. Response to radiation varies with age and pubescence. Spermatogonial stem cells, c…

Utilization of a novel radio-opaque 3D printed phantom for simulation training of CT-guided interventional procedure.

BACKGROUND: Training radiology residents to perform CT-guided procedures can be challenging due to limited access to scanner time, competition for procedures with other residents and fellows and the risk of exposing patients to unnecessary additional radiation due to the inexperience of the primary operator. Simulation training has shown great benefit in reducing patient risk and increasing training opportunities. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a high-fidelity 3D-printed model as an interventional radiology training tool for trainees. METHODS: This study was approved by the…
