Physicians' radiation exposure in the catheterization lab: does the type of procedure matter?

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate differences in radiation exposure of the operator depending on the type of catheterization lab procedure. BACKGROUND: Invasive cardiologists and angiologists are exposed to long-term, low-dose occupational radiation. Increased workload and specialization require more detailed knowledge of the extent and cause of the radiation exposure. METHODS: In this prospective single-center experience, radiation doses of 3 operators were measured by real-time dosimetry for body, neck, and hand during 284 procedures in 281 patients over a period of 14 weeks. To de

Radiation exposure of the anesthesiologist in the neurointerventional suite.

BACKGROUND: Scatter radiation during interventional radiology procedures can produce cataracts in participating medical personnel. Standard safety equipment for the radiologist includes eye protection. The typical configuration of fluoroscopy equipment directs radiation scatter away from the radiologist and toward the anesthesiologist. This study analyzed facial radiation exposure of the anesthesiologist during interventional neuroradiology procedures. METHODS: Radiation exposure to the forehead of the anesthesiologist and radiologist was measured during 31 adult neuroradiologic procedures in

[Epinal radiotherapy accident: passed, present, future].

The accident of radiation oncology at the Public General Hospital in Epinal, Vosges, is the highest in France. It is classified level 6 on a 10 degrees scale of the ASN/SFRO (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire/Société française de radiothérapie oncologique). It is linked to errors in the process of treatment, and a mistake in the use of dynamic wedges, with an overdosage of 20%. The clinical consequences are severe, for the patients treated for a prostate cancer and exposed to this overdosage, between May 2005 and August 2006. Sequelae were classified grade 2 to 5 on the CTCAE 3.0 scale. A second co

Multiteacher Knowledge Distillation for Canine Scoring Using Dental Panoramic Radiographs to Support Primary Care.

OBJECTIVES: Automated classification of radiographic findings remains challenging due to limited annotated datasets and interobserver variability. Artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostic technologies can improve accessibility to health care, especially in areas with limited radiologic expertise, while contributing to universal health care. This study examined whether a student model taught by multiteacher knowledge distillation (KD) outperformed individual teacher models in a 4-class radiographic grading task for impacted maxillary canines on panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Comparison of Clinical Guidelines for Authorization of MRI in the Evaluation of Neck Pain and Cervical Radiculopathy in the United States.

The American College of Radiology has published appropriateness criteria to help guide when to use MRI. Many health insurance carriers use proprietary clinical guidelines for prior authorization of imaging studies. The purpose of this study was to compare the specific criteria in those guidelines, for neck pain both with and without radicular symptoms. An online search was conducted to identify the guidelines for authorization of cervical spine MRI used by the largest commercial insurance carriers in the United States by market share. Guidelines were analyzed for neck pain with and without rad

Evaluation and management of a child with short stature.

Growth monitoring is a fundamental approach to evaluate a child's health and it is part of preventive programs to timely identify and treat a possible disease. Height and weight measurements, calculation of height velocity over time are main instruments to discover pathological deviations. Short stature is defined as a height that is greater than or equal 2 standard deviations (SDS) below the mean height for reference children comparable for sex and age. According to the International Classification of Pediatric Endocrine Diagnosis (ICPED) the possible causes of short stature could be divided

Lower limb complications of diabetes mellitus: a comprehensive review with clinicopathological insights from a dedicated high-risk diabetic foot multidisciplinary team.

Diabetic complications in the lower extremity are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and impact heavily upon the public health system. Early and accurate recognition of these abnormalities is crucial, enabling the early initiation of treatments and thus avoiding or minimizing deformity, dysfunction and amputation. Following careful clinical assessment, radiological imaging is central to the diagnostic and follow-up process. We aim to provide a comprehensive review of diabetic lower limb complications designed to assist radiologists and to contribute to better outcomes for the

Integrated Alpha-Gamma Radiation Exposure From Natural Radionuclides in Cement and Gypsum Production: Implications for Occupational Lung Cancer Risk.

Natural radionuclides in cement and gypsum production materials pose significant risks of occupational radiation exposure that are not well documented in Iraqi Kurdistan. This study quantifies alpha and gamma radiation levels from naturally occurring radioactive materials, specifically 222Rn, 238U, 232Th, and 40K, in cement and gypsum samples from regional production facilities. Radionuclide activity concentrations were measured using alpha counting techniques and gamma spectrometry. The air concentrations of radon gas ranged from 76.14 to 285.98 Bq/m3, with an average of 169.42 Bq/m3. Althoug

Beyond annual dose: Assessing lifetime cancer risk from dietary radiocesium exposure and public risk-perception gaps in Japan.

Radiocesium in food poses an ongoing challenge in environmental health risk assessment. Annual dose compliance (1 mSv/year) is essential for radiological protection but may not reflect cumulative lifetime cancer risk (LCR) under chronic exposure or corresponding public risk perceptions. We developed an integrated radiological risk assessment framework to evaluate dietary radiocesium-related health risks and determine whether these estimates align with public risk perceptions. We estimated prefecture-level LCR and risk-perception gaps through multilevel regression and poststratification using a

Spinal brucellosis - A mimicker of spinal tuberculosis: An analysis of 10 patients from a tertiary care center in India.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis of the spine has emerged as a significant health concern in developing countries. Spinal brucellosis shares identical clinical and radiological features with tubercular spondylodiscitis. A wide range of nonspecific symptoms, chronicity of this disease, and tissue culture which is mostly invasive and time-consuming, pose a challenge in definitive diagnosis. In this study, we aim to report the clinical, radiological, and microbiological features of this disease and analyze the outcome of patients treated for spinal brucellosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective
