We evaluated the effect of sucralfate in patients with early gastric cancer in endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)-induced gastric ulcers, and in rats with acetic acid-induced ulcers, by measuring concentrations of aluminium adhering to mucosal lesions. Twenty-five patients with pyloric channel ulcers are presented. They were predominantly males (84%), with a mean age of 54 years. Four patients were operated upon in the initial admission because of gastric outlet obstruction in three and persistent bleeding in one. Omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole which inhibits profoundly and long-lasting human acid secretion. The maximum inhibition effect of omeprazole begins after 3-5 days treatment. Even after 28 days application no significant rebound effects were seen after withdrawal from the medication. Omeprazole was clinically tested on several thousand patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the following study is to investigate the effect of ovarian sex hormones on gastric ulcer in female rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female rats were treated daily with estrogen (0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg), progesterone (2.0 and 5.0 mg/kg), combined estrogen (0.05 mg/kg) and progesterone (2.0 mg/kg), ranitidine (30 mg/kg) or vehicle for 7 days.
